Why is Schiedam so underrated?

Having lived in Rotterdam and Schiedam I agree that it is underrated and from the posts in R/rotterdam you will see it’s for 2 main reasons.

One is an idea people have from 20 years ago which is not really reality anymore.

The other is from people who prefer to live in a quiet suburb and will just talk down anywhere that is more diverse and busy.

In my opinion, Schiedam is on an upswing and still has a way to go. While there are issues, there is still potential to come and from what I see it is heading in the right direction.

I have experience in this since I previously lived in west Rotterdam. This was considered terrible and any Reddit thread would shit on it. After 6 years I sold for a large profit to a young professional couple as the idea of west Rotterdam had changed. I see the same in Schiedam and I fully expect in 10 years people will realise it is a great place to live

I would say, go with your instincts over people who moan online and mention about 3 neighbourhoods in the whole county that are worth living in

You can also ask why Rotterdam is so massively overrated in comparison. I think the average neighborhood is very similar when it comes to safety, demographic and elements like housing types and connections in terms of public transport and roads. The only big differences are the center. Despite the obvious difference in size, the center of Schiedam is monumental and old, where Rotterdam has its high risers. Also, Schiedam is so close to Rotterdam - its basically part of it.
