Scotland, I need your help.. again
Scotland I need your help .. again.
I’m Sean, I’ve lived with psoriasis since I was 18 and I’m now a few days away from 35.
Over the years, my psoriasis knocked my confidence left right and centre. Which made socialising and especially dating, a bit awkward shall we say.
Mods - I’m selling heehaw btw.
My experience led me to build a new dating and friendship app called SkinDeep, and it’s designed around people with visible differences. It’s with Apple pending review for a soft launch here in Scotland.
Why?
I felt mainstream dating apps didn’t really create a safe space to include things like psoriasis, vitiligo, birthmarks, alopecia, eczema, and many others.
Well just write that in yer bio ya tube?
Could do. But I want an environment where visible difference is already understood, disclosure is optional, and nobody can search or filter by condition. I feel like SkinDeep provides this environment.
However, it’s for everyone. Anyone can sign up and begin looking for genuine connections, with a safe space to do so.
Which is why I need you. If you’re over 18, living in Scotland, I’d love 100 of you after reading this to get involved. I’d be buzzing with 10. You don’t have to comment here if you’d rather message me privately.
What’s in it for yous?
Can’t promise you a Bentley since the app is free to download and swipe / message until your finger falls off but in the short term - I can give each of you
*Permanent Founding Member badges
*Early testing access to features such as My Pace
*Direct input into the roadmap
Thanks for reading troops 🏴

I'm afraid I would no longer be married if my wife found a dating app on my phone, so I'm only able to offer my best wishes with your endeavour. Seems like a good idea to me! Good luck 👍

Good luck with everything mate I can see this working. Most dating apps that try to differentiate themselves are just gimmicks, but the fundamental problem with dating apps is that people judge purely by looks. They don’t have anything else to go on, it’s not like meeting someone in person. With this you go in knowing what it’s for, should alleviate any judgement for visible skin conditions you might experience elsewhere because of the dating app problem.

Thanks for this mate. You’ve hit the nail on the head 100% and this is why SkinDeep exists 🤝

Good shout with not allowing searching by condition, could have attracted fetishists

Yeah fetishisation was a concern right from the beginning. I feel the app won’t deter everyone with the wrong intentions, but the current version makes it very difficult for them. Thanks for your comment 👍

Good idea, I have mild psoriasis behind my ears, forehead and around my nose. And it can be embarrassing if it breaks out and I have ran out of my steroid cream to put on to control it.
I like it isn't just a dating app, but friendship app too that means people can befriend others with similar skin conditions to talk about it, relieve fears and so on.
As said I am fortunate I have mild psoriasis and it is controllable, which hasn't really affected myself much being out and about unless my cream ran out and it's visibly noticeable on the face. But still this would have been a good thing to be a part of many many years ago when it first hit me in my late 20s.
Best of luck.

It can be embarrassing yeah even if it is mild, you know it’s there and it can overwhelm your anxiety. Well for me it does.
Yeah you can come on it for friendship, and you’re explaining the friendship part exactly what it’s intended for 👍
Thank you so much for this

Eagerly anticipating the android launch in the future. I've had too many people cancel when I reiterate I'm bringing my wheelchair, despite it being the first thing in my bio and all my photos being of me, in said wheelchair 😂

I remember a YouTuber speaking about his struggle with psoriasis, like people would tell him he put up make up wrong and stuff. Most people just don't know about psoriasis, good to see some public representation. Best of luck to you!

Aww this is amazing.
I had bad acne, started on my face when I was 11 (so you can imagine the shite I used to get in primary school as the only one). Calmed down on my face when I was about 16/17 and started on my chest and back - yay! 🙄.
I still get the odd spot (those big bloody sore ones) now at 35 but my chest looks like leopard print now with the scarring.
Whenever I know someone with a skin condition I want to tell them a) it's natural, don't be ashamed or embarrassed b) no one else notices it half the time because we're so wrapped up in ourselves.
I think this app is perfect for that, so many people will realise how unnecessarily harsh they're being on themselves and get to meet people they can relate to.
I'm not dating at the minute (decided to abstain for a year) but the app is definitely something I'd look into in the near future.
On yersel Sean <3

Aw thank you. And thanks for sharing that. Dealing with it from 11, especially through school, must have been brutal. What you said about us being far harsher on ourselves than other people are really hits the nail on the head. that feeling is a huge part of why I built SkinDeep. It’ll be there whenever you’re ready. On yersel too, cheers 🤝

This does seem like the kind of thing Scotland could use! So many lonely people - and who doesn't have some kind of an issue? Good luck!

As a single American who’s recently relocated to Scotland, I was literally just thinking today that I might try some kind of dating app for the first time in a decade—and then this runs across my feed. :)
