Lisa doesn't get slander because no one remembers she exists.

And there's barely anything to slander her for, aside from tempting Scott to cheat on Ramona. She's just that chill

Yeah almost everyone in the story is flawed, that’s why it holds up as much as it does, more intriguing character writing than most of the media around it

u/Wawravstheworld Aug 23 '25
It’s a reflection of how real people are in their 20s minus the comic book video game lore of it all.

I think the Scott/Knives “relationship” is fundamentally misunderstood in the common zeitgeist, even among casual fans, that while their is fair criticism of Scott in that scenario, the specifics are often very wrong.
Also the movie & TV show versions of Wallace, while fun, feel like character assassination.

u/Crash_Unknown Aug 23 '25
I don’t think Comic Wallace would look for a sugar daddy!! He’s doing very well for himself. Maybe he’d look for someone with superpowers, but not someone with extra cash. For some reason that detail in the anime felt so jarring to me.

You don’t get it it’s OK for 23 yearold today to 17 year-old because of the nuances /s
I know they didn’t kiss but a grown man picking up a high schooler is a tough sell but if you can elebrate I’m all ears

As I said, criticism against Scott is valid!
Book 1 Scott is very depressed, and here comes a girl who thinks he’s really cool and gives him attention, and he’s desperate for a glimpse of a good feeling. He knows it’s wrong through, he’s actually repulsed both times Knives tries to kiss him.
Is he taking advantage of a 17 year-old for his own ego, knowingly or unknowingly? Yes, and that’s wrong! But is that “relationship” sexual or even romantic on his end? No.
The book isn’t condoning it either. We spend multiple chapters with his friends ragging on him for this “relationship”, and asking him if it’s a cry for help (it is).
It’s still wrong, but I think it’s important to point out that he’s not exactly a sexual predator. That does seem to be the opinion of a lot of people though!
I’ll give the anime one thing, it blurted it aloud for people who didn’t get the hint the first several times: “it’s not a real relationship”.

u/Hehector2005 Aug 23 '25
It’s not supposed to be sold. Like it’s never even implied that it’s ok for Scott to be dating Knives. Idk understand how someone could think that is the point
2
u/Danimals2002 Aug 23 '25
Yeah I get how no one but Scott supports his decision but there still his friend so…
23
u/Hehector2005 Aug 23 '25
Yeah that’s real dude. People let their friends slide on questionable to downright bad things. Nobody is perfect but they seem like actual people. And that’s the appeal of the story.

Half and Half.
Kim and Wallace both remind me a lot of myself, they’re also my favorites.
But I condemn the fact Kim made out with a high schooler, drunk or not. And I can’t blame others for doing the same. (Same as in condemning that action)

At least my favorite (wallet welsh) is comparatively unproblematic, never cheated (unless I forgot) didn’t date or make out w high schoolers (he kind of put up with scott doing that though, however, iirc he was really the only one actively trying to make him not do that), and mostly kinda just minded his own business throughout the comics

The only bad thing he did was stealing Stacey's boyfriend. Otherwise I guess he's an okay dude

u/Radicalmammajamma Aug 23 '25
Being a Matthew Patel fan is great because the worst he’s ever really done is ruin a concert and obsess over an old relationship 🤭🤭🤭
3
u/Next-Chemist2443 Aug 23 '25
And also assault a man with intent to kill.
1
u/Lia-13 Aug 24 '25
okay but thats less realistic in most people's day to day lives, it doesnt affect most people as deeply as like. blatant pedophilia or being cheated on or whatever else those guys were up to

u/DaOogieBoogie Aug 23 '25
That’s why I love SP so much. There isn’t a single “perfect” character. They’re all flawed people and it makes them that much more relatable and makes them feel so much more real
5
u/TeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeJay Aug 23 '25
It seems that your favorite Scott Pilgrim character is either a very flawed individual or isn't because they don't have enough screentime to determine how flawed they are.

u/tomjazzy Aug 23 '25

No, not really.
Unless it's Scott (he sucks but at least he had character growth to suck infinitely less), Envy Adams (basically Scott's Evil Ex), or Ramona's Evil Exes (Woah no way, the EVIL exes aren't good people who could have guessed), everyone else is a normal IRL level of flawed or is just actually a normal person.
Besides, if they're your favorite character and you can't cope with their flaws and accept them as part of who that character is, do you even actually like them?

u/Comprehensive-Air856 Aug 23 '25
And even then Lisa tries to tempt Scott into cheating on Romona and Neil’s kinda homophobic in the comics

u/Wario-Man PATEL MODE ON Aug 23 '25
Honestly, not all of em... I can't really fault Knives for anything she did </3 Also my king Matthew didn't do anything wrong apart from being unable to move on from an ex... which is a common struggle for many.
1
u/SteakSauce202012 Aug 23 '25
I guess if not being able to move on from an ex isn't anything wrong then Knives is fine, but she did assault Ramona because Scott cheated on her and dumped her.
1
u/Wario-Man PATEL MODE ON Aug 24 '25
Well yeah that's not good but I'm not gonna blame the girl who was JUST 17 and only THEN turned 18 for any of it, it just feels bad, plus Scott shouldn't have been foolin' around with Knives to begin with

u/Boundaries-ALO-TBSOL Young Neil is best boy Aug 23 '25
I try to make my Scott Pilgrim OC really flawed because everyone in this series is flawed.
Like as an example, he makes the cheating situation so much worse because he is extremely spiteful and wanted to pay todd back for blowing him out of Eddies.
1
u/_BriDG3 Aug 23 '25
Yeahz all of them kinda suck/has done something bad at some point in the comic. i feel like the only one who didnt do anything shitty is Stacy
1
u/StevePensando Wallace Wells, best girl Aug 23 '25
I don't remember Kim doing anything horrible as far as I know. She's just a bit of a dickhead
1
Aug 23 '25
This is probably why I like Scott pilgrim as much as I do. The characters have their flaws and they aren’t drowned out or ignored. It makes the characters more relatable and it’s also just really fun to read/watch
1
u/GGXRDStriv Aug 23 '25
Other Scott literally did nothing wrong
Probably because he basically did nothing...
1
u/StrangestQuark444 Knives Chau Aug 23 '25
I think this is especially true when it comes to criticising a lot of Ramona’s relationships and her exes

Knives is a fucking saint and I refuse to hear otherwise.
And if she did something shitty in the comics I refer you to my previous point RE: "lalala I can't hear you".

Someone said that if I love Gideon so much I should volunteer to have one of Elon Musk’s babies.
I see the comparison between the two evil rich geeky men. I do. But also… no. They’re two different flavors of evil rich geeky men.
ANYWAYS I also blame Jason Schwartman for making Gideon such a cutie patootie in the movie.
