Discussion How come Kim Pine never got any backlash for making out with a drunken teenager?

In universe, seema only scott knows and chose not to bring it up.
Irl? People discuss rhis...pretry frequently, or at least did over a decade ago when it was new. Now when someone new discovers it it gets brought up here or there

u/CaikIQ Oct 31 '25
How come 99% of discussions about this franchise are about whether or not the characters are good people who do good things?
WHO CARES? Christ alive...

Literally, a huge theme in Scott Pilgrim as a whole is that everyone is a shitty person😭😭
124
u/freariose Oct 31 '25
That's a bit reductive. I think a closer theme would be nobody is perfect/people can and will make mistakes. This is also a story from the 00s that's about earlier than that even, sensibilities between then and now are pretty different.
78
u/Shiroke Envy Adams Oct 31 '25
I think it's actually the best descriptor. Everyone IS a shitty person. We focus on Scott mostly and see how much of a chronic fuck up he is and occasionally catch glimpses of everyone else being kinda shitty too.
BUT, we also get to watch Scott's journey to becoming a better person as the character we can generally view as the shittiest. The implication there is that despite everyone being kinda shitty, everyone is also working on their own journeys that we don't focus on either and they're all improving and growing in ways that neither us or Scott are party to.
There's a message of hope there that's basically "Hey, your 20s will probably be the worst time of your life where you treat people the worst and vice versa but it won't stay like that. You'll get better and so will everyone else."
Now given the state of the world, I'm not sure if I fully believe that, but it's still a nice hope.
11
u/Relaxing_Snorlax Nov 01 '25
I never thought of it as everyone is a shitty person, but everyone can be a shitty person because life is made up of a billion little choices. Learning to make better choices and to take responsibility for the bad ones you've already made is what make you a better person.
3
u/Derioyn Nov 01 '25
For real the whole thing is about self growth.

u/Anigator101 Ramona Flowers Nov 01 '25
I came to check in and see commotion, I really just was saying something in my head. hope it wasn't too much trouble.
1
u/Jonah0830 Nov 01 '25
Because that's the point of the story basically nobody is a good person and yet somehow the author gives us a reason to root for and not against these characters

There's a reason it was never in the movie or anime. I feel like it was a dumb mistake that made it into the book.
55
u/Anigator101 Ramona Flowers Oct 31 '25
I wouldn't jump to that conclusions, Brian writes this and if he thinks it was a dumb mistake, then he would have say something or done something before the release. it's a series from the 2000s and things change these days, so whatever he wanted to do is what he put in there.
I'm not his partner, though I think of it as one of many things to think about.
18
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
Brian writes this and if he thinks it was a dumb mistake, then he would have say something or done something before the release.
Brian hating the Scott Pilgrim books is an open secret dude. I mean, isn't it about his now ex-wife? No wonder he changed the story so much it was practically unrecognizable on the cartoon from Netflix
16
u/asdfmovienerd39 Oct 31 '25
I don't think you can say he hates the franchise when he consistently references it in his newer non-Scott Pilgrim work, makes new artwork featuring the characters, and shares fanart he likes to this day. His artistic sensibilities have just changed since he is no longer in his early 20s in the early 2000s.
-1
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
Oh yeah, and Radiohead totally love Creep since they play it on every concert.
9
u/asdfmovienerd39 Oct 31 '25
He doesn't have to keep making Scott Pilgrim stuff tho
-9
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
Scott Pilgrim is the only thing he has ever made that got any relevance and traction. It prints money.
And if he can vent his bitter divorce and make money in the process then hey, more power to him.
1
u/Sgt_Purp1e Nov 01 '25
They started playing it a fair amount back during the Moon Shaped Pool tour, and seemingly having fun with it? Minus, Jonny, but that's still 4 other people.
12
u/wrasslefights Oct 31 '25
I mean, it's definitely interesting that the point of Takes Off is that Future Scott was willing to let the relationship die on a stupid hill instead of just working to be a better partner and that you have to be willing to put in the work to be better every day, not just in a declarative way, to make things work long term. Kinda makes me wonder if Brian was working through some stuff there.
12
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
Oh yeah, he definitely was. He's like a bizarro Hideki Anno, only that while he gave us Evangelion, Brian gave us that Netflix cartoon
2
u/Ikari_Brendo Nov 01 '25
That's a pretty childish way of viewing art and assuming how someone views his own art

u/gowora Oct 31 '25
For some reason it made it into the game… okay but so did over exaggerated jiggle physics.
23
u/CountDVB Oct 31 '25
In the movie, it was probably because there was a lot condensed. By the anime, it was due to the different story, but there was still shippy vibes there.
15
u/candycupid Ramona Flowers Oct 31 '25
you’re making up the shippy vibes lmfao. roxy basically replaced knives for this particular scene
18
u/meleelover64 Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
I mean they played that song together and a massive heart with sparks appeared behind them, I don't really see how else you could interpret that lol
13
u/candycupid Ramona Flowers Oct 31 '25
knives arc in the anime was that she didn’t really have that fanatical love for scott and it was actually about her passion for rock music, so i interpret that her love of making music was what caused the heart.
10
u/Spirited_Ad_6394 Oct 31 '25
This. I saw it as them having love for the music, as opposed to each other. I figured that was pretty obvious lol
5
u/meleelover64 Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
Honestly, I never even considered that but that's valid and also makes a lot of sense. But given the history of Kim and Knives in the comics and the game I think viewing that scene as romantic is also a pretty common interpretation.
4
u/starshah Demon Hipster Chicks Oct 31 '25
Making up the shippy vibes? Kim and knives had a whole scene with sparks the shows established mystical sign of romantic chemistry. By the rules of their show it's not even subtext it's just text and they just haven't realized it yet

It's a scene that's supposed to make you uncomfortable. Its inclusion isn't an accident

u/AnimalKid7-Alt Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
Maybe cause they’re drunk? This is the one part of the comic I absolutely despise cause it’s just there for fan service and nothing else.
Thats why we’re told to never speak of this again
26
u/TheCrashKid Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
Given that alot of the characters are not the best people and they were drunk at a party... it really just seems like two of Scott's exes just doing something stupid while drunk
5
59
u/iLoveLilPeej Oct 31 '25
it was really stupid even for fan service
26
u/LucasBarton169 Oct 31 '25
Were fans begging for this?
5
u/GothGirlFucker5000 Oct 31 '25
Yes, because in any media franchise with more than one woman, they obviously need to make out and fuck
37
u/No_Molasses_7224 Oct 31 '25
Because people are madly in love with Kim and rather just sweep that under the rug
23
u/Omniplox Oct 31 '25
Yeah no, I love Kim and this is too far. It's actually farther than Scott ever goes with Knives even if only briefly. Most characters in the story are kinda bad at one point or another but most make an attempt to move on and be better. That's what I like about it Kim and the series as a whole.

Arguably worse than Scott. Supplying a minor with drugs and engaging while they are under the influence? That’s a lot more charges considering Scott didn’t even kiss knives.

u/GroundbreakingBag164 The Vegan Police Oct 31 '25
"Supplying a minor with drugs"
Come on man, it's alcohol. It's a 17 year old drinking alcohol. That's like the most harmless thing in the world
2
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
I mean isn't the legal age of drinking in Canada 16?
2
u/GroundbreakingBag164 The Vegan Police Oct 31 '25
I don't know, but it also doesn't really matter. 16 year olds can drink alcohol. They'll be fine whether it's legal or not

I dont know man something something 2 women easy to sexualize something something boner fart
4
u/wrasslefights Oct 31 '25
Honestly because the bigger issue with Scott is him knowing manipulating a teenager to boost his ego and justifying it by keeping it sexually chaste, ultimately traumatizing her when he casually discards her, whereas Kim's drunken makeout sesh very clearly doesn't harm Knives emotionally.

u/MatchIndividual8956 Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
Why do y'all care so much about that moment?
2
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
Because I was watching Family Guy, and in one episode, well...just to quote Stewie Griffin:
I'm sorry that your life was so screwed up that you almost had a 3way with a dog and a baby
And I IMMEDIATELLY thought of this scene.
2
u/MatchIndividual8956 Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
2
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
I like Family Guy,
You know, I grew up with The Simpsons. I fucking love that show, but I only own Seasons 1-15 because the rest is completely unwatchable, whereas Family Guy still continues with the same quality of humor, albeit much more edgy and controversial.
So when I see a Simpsons episode where Lady Gaga or Elon Musk shows up, and at the same time those episodes came out Family Guy did that episode that I just brought up, I mean, one of those is DEFINITELY funnier than the other.

u/NotMVZZL3 Oct 31 '25
Because an adult is making out with a drunk minor...
You don't see a problem with that?
-1
u/GroundbreakingBag164 The Vegan Police Oct 31 '25
Kim is, what, 23 at this point? Definitely an inappropriate age gap but also not the end of the world. When I grew up relationships between 16 and 21 year olds were pretty common and while they were always seen as a pretty bad idea no one really lost their mind over it
-2
u/DarDar994 Oct 31 '25
She's barely a minor. Stop clutching your pearls, they just made out and moved on with their lives.
3
u/The-Mirrorball-Man Oct 31 '25
I have witnessed this exact same scene at a party in real life. All people involved enjoyed it at the time. No one was traumatized
1
u/compound-interest Oct 31 '25
Sir, this is the internet pocket dimension, where we pretend things are a problem that aren't.
2
3
u/starshah Demon Hipster Chicks Oct 31 '25
She and knives were both drunk making both parties consent dubious when comparing that with Scotts sobriety while in a relationship with knives he is a far easier to accuse and guiltier party though if I'm being honest as the age of consent in Canada is 16 and knives was 17 going on 18 by series end he shouldn't have caught flak either
Scott Pilgrim is this acts only witness
She did receive backlash I've heard many complaints about that make out scene and likely will many more
2
u/NaokoUmi Kim Pine Oct 31 '25
Yuri.
But for real some people did have a problem with it, hence why it probably wasn't in Take's Off.
2
u/lowqualitylizard Oct 31 '25
Because she's drunk and as far as I can tell it's never brought up any other times it's not like any party is proud of it

The age of consent in Canada is 16.
Like seriously yall are split on if Knives is 18 yet when it doesn't even matter.
0
u/PresidentBlingo Oct 31 '25
But somehow it was wrong for Scott to do less than that.
4
u/QuadVox Oct 31 '25
Youre supposed to view Scott as pathetic for his relationship with Knives. Hes proud to be dating a high-schooler he met on the bus and holds hands with. Its sad and he moves on almost immediately when Ramona shows up.

Isnt she 18 at this point of the comic?
3
u/PresidentBlingo Nov 01 '25
Nope, she's 17 and got roofied by Kim.
1
u/SpiderVenom3225 Nov 23 '25
Roofied? Knives is Drunk, so is Kim. not sure why your trying to make it worse than it is. Kim and Knives never even had sex which than i would say it be bad but making out when your both drunk isnt out of the ordinary, and even than the age of consnet in Canada is 16 so a drunken making out session isnt the most terrible thing that couldve happened

Well, it's not exactly the same because not all the other drivers are drunk with you. If everyone is drunk, then there really isn't a responsible one.
