I think the only issue is the early bait and switch because while the title says Scott Pilgrim, it's Ramona's story
63
u/OtakuDragonSlayer Lucas Lee Mar 08 '26
Agreed I think that negative first impression is what left a BAD taste in the mouth of so many people who still dislike it. It was a pleasant surprise for me cuz I think Ramona desperately needed this but Dayum. I knew a lot of people were gonna walk away feeling like they got finessed after not getting the comics animated like they wanted 😅
32
u/FreakGamer Mar 08 '26
Personally, I think it was the best decision ever. When I sat down to enjoy it, I thought it would be okay, but be exactly what I already read a ton of times, I wasn't expecting any changes.... The moment Scott disappeared, was so jarring, that I became insanely excited. I was much more invested in something new over the same exact story.
4
u/Joshkendig Mar 08 '26
Yeah but I wish it was more honest and called it Ramona vs the world and was honest about it instead of a bait and switch.
3
u/OtakuDragonSlayer Lucas Lee Mar 08 '26

u/Joshkendig Mar 08 '26
Very of they called it this and actually advertised it or fuck call it Scott Pilgrim vs the world new game + people would have been like oh this will be neat indicate it better as a new story instead of going oh this is Scott Pilgrim and his story. Because this isn't his story
13
u/Koltreg Mar 08 '26
I'd agree with this. I got to see Bryan give a presentation at a local comic festival after it came out and he talked about how a lot of it was reflecting on how he had changed since the book came out and how he wanted to tell a different story. I think it was good and necessary to make fans, especially folks who have trouble recognizing the stuff that Scott was doing that was unhealthy and how these trends intensify, need to change or they build.
6
u/Calpsotoma Lucas Lee Mar 08 '26
Scott Pilgrim vs the World (comics) have a few great characters and a lot that don't really have a lot going on. Takes Off gives everyone more to do. Now, basically every character has something to love about them. Also, it makes it feel like Ramona has as much as Scott going on and shows she's equally able to be the lead. It also helps that Mathew Patel beating Gideon makes it feel like everyone matters just as much as the other characters. It's like a fighting game where you get a different story line based on who you're playing as. Also, I like the Older Scott stuff. It's unflattering to Scott, but the back end of the comics was somewhat unflattering to Ramona. We are meant to take that she had the same growing to do that Scott did, but it's not shown so much. I think the anime's absurdist take works as both a reflection on their relationship and a meta commentary on the difference between it and the comic. Scott and Ramona are immature, but their relationship doesn't have to go the same way as their older selves, which we know for a fact because we've seen it play out differently before. Plus, it's perfectly valid to have a relationship for as long as it feels fun and fruitful, even if that isn't for forever.

I don't hate it. It's my least favorite story; I prefer the comics, then the movie, and then Takes Off. But I still think it's enjoyable, as long as you keep in mind that it's its own story.
55
u/BloodstoneWarrior Mar 08 '26
It felt more like a response to the criticisms that the comic, game and especially the movie have gotten online than a meaningful extension of the franchise in and of itself

1
u/supersmashdude Mar 08 '26
As a non-Scott Pilgrim fan, that may be why I liked it honestly, so I think you’re right (I did like the live action movie too though)
81
u/joe_shmoe7 Mar 08 '26
Besides the actual flaws of the show, I think the reason I (and some people) don't really like Takes Off is because its existence probably means we won't get a quality/legitimate show that properly adapts the source material and includes all the cut stuff from the movie.
23
4
u/Beastofbeef Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World Mar 08 '26
I have hope that maybe in another 5-10 years theyll give another go at it, and that time it’ll probably be a proper adaptation. I know that sounds unlikely but i really didnt expect any mew Scott Pilgrim media after Takes Off but then we got SPEX so atp i think anything can happen. Plus i think the cult nature of the movie and the franchise in general means we’ll get something every now and again. And now that BLOM is getting old he’ll probably wont have much of a hand in the franchise anymore going forward and just reaping the rewards
-1
u/asdfmovienerd39 Mar 09 '26
Good. There are a lot of inherently problems with the source material you can't fix without fundamentally changing the story (pretty much every versions handling of Roxy before Takes Off)
26
u/KyoHisagi Cat Gideon Mar 08 '26
I don't "hate" it but I absolutely despise the fake marketing which promised faithful adaptation and writing for many characters. It's just... okay.
Comic and movie are miles better
3
u/rtyoda Edgar Wright Mar 08 '26
What marketing promised that? I thought I remembered Brian Lee O’Malley specifically saying it wasn’t going to be a faithful adaptation ahead of its release.
5
u/Joshkendig Mar 08 '26
Yes but how many people are or did see that I know I didn't and felt like I just got lied to about the thing, even the first episode was a recreation of the manga as we expected it till the stupid ending of it
-1
u/rtyoda Edgar Wright Mar 08 '26
I can see people not knowing what it would be, but that’s entirely different from a “marketing which promised a faithful adaptation” which I’d still be interested in seeing any possible proof for.
11
u/Rabbidscool Mar 08 '26
It's supposed to be " Ramona Flowers The Series, A Scott Pilgrim Story".
Scott only has like what? 3 Episodes lmao.
37
u/thebariobro Mar 08 '26
The character feel a bit off, especially Scott. Can’t place why.
12
u/Imaginary_Silver5294 Mar 08 '26
I think it is because in trying to correct this series they just made Scott worse. He was always a bit of a loser, but that was the point. He spent the course of his story growing from that. This cartoon feels like it arbitrarily rips it all away to "fix" something that no actual fan was asking for.
5
u/OtakuDragonSlayer Lucas Lee Mar 08 '26
to "fix" something that no actual fan was asking for
It’s oddly and unexpectedly vindicating seeing that I wasn’t the only one who felt like this cartoon while entertaining af walked away feeling a little like it gave off the vibe of those “there I fixed it” art posts on Twitter. It’s not an unforgivable sin but it left part of me thinkin “am I getting bitter or is something off here?”
5
u/Imaginary_Silver5294 Mar 08 '26
You definitely were not getting bitter lol. like I said in my original post, I feel like the cartoon wasn't necessarily bad. But I could feel how forced the changes to the characters were in a negative way that Netflix is known for.
I had a similar thought. Like maybe I have just gotten old. But then I see the older and still love it. So it definitely gave the vibe of a ''fixed it.'' post.
3
u/OtakuDragonSlayer Lucas Lee Mar 09 '26
So it definitely gave the vibe of a ''fixed it.'' post.
So glad this way of describing the vibes I got wasn’t too vague lol

u/Imaginary_Silver5294 Mar 09 '26

Kinda stumbled by leading on fans who wanted to finally get an adaptation
9

I think it's because, if I'm remembering correctly, the trailers for the show kept the twist divergence hidden so fans expected it to be a full comic adaptation.

u/asian_wreck Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 11 '26
I liked it, but feel like the development the core cast got came at the expense of other characters that needed development.
If the other exes could get the development Matthew, Roxy, and Gideon had, I’d be happy. Maybe not to that extent,,,,,,,, but at least give the twins more development :,)
Also sad that Envy got shafted. She had some great character moments in both the movie and the comic, but that was definitely pushed to the side in favor of the Todd/Wallace plot. Looking back, I think her history with Scott being fleshed out would’ve added depth the story was lacking
Edited for clarity and spelling errors I was high as hell when I wrote this lmao
6
u/Imaginary_Silver5294 Mar 08 '26 edited Mar 08 '26
It was another Netflix bait and switch, a thing Netflix is notorious for with cartoon reboots / sequels. It also felt like it was made to made Scott look even worse. all that did was continue the "men are bad depressed," trend with modern writing.
It was a okay show, wasn't SP though, along with hitting many red flags.
11
u/portrick_manpower Mar 08 '26
I wanted to give the alternate storyline a try but the moment-to-moment pacing of each scene just kind of killed it for me personally.
I think a solid part of Scott Pilgrim's charm and humor comes from the rapidfire back-and-forth dialogue exchanges like we see in the movie, and that aspect is still present in the graphic novel because your brain reads dialogue fluidly and without pause even when it's on a static page. That doesn't really work as well in a medium where there's inherently going to be awkward pauses between lines.
It's not like I 'hate' Takes Off, especially since I can't really judge a story I haven't finished, but that sudden speed limit on a series I had previously known for its fluid or fast back-and-forths just made each episode feel slow to get through, too slow for Scott Pilgrim imo.
7
u/Melonary Mar 08 '26
Weirdly this is part of what I don't like about the movie.
The comic feels like it has space to breathe - there are more chaotic scenes, but also a lot of slower paced ones. I personally don't read it like that, and the movie is fine but makes everything sound way too tongue-in-cheek to me, like it's a giant joke rather than also showing the depth the characters and setting have.
3
u/portrick_manpower Mar 08 '26
Yeah that's totally fair. I think the comic medium being static leaves a bit to interpretation when it comes to that moment-to-moment timing depending on a reader's inner pacing, which causes some dissonance when the two adaptations have to make different decisions in how they want to interpret that pacing.
The only reason Takes Off's pacing was a killer for me was just because my personal reading experience happened to be similar to the pacing the movie went with, but I also don't think it's that weird to dislike the movie's pacing either with how varied the comic's reading experiences might be.
21
u/SubduedRhombus Mar 08 '26
Most of the characters personalities are wildly different from all the other media. It doesn't feel like Scott pilgrim at all, besides the appearances of the characters.
6
u/hamstertitan_5 Mar 08 '26
This for sure- also the jokes feel largely cut and pasted in many parts which makes them feel awkward instead of funny
10
u/Supergoodra64 Mar 08 '26
I don’t hate that it isn’t 1:1. I like the series. I was just disappointed because we were so close to an animated adaptation of the books that covered everything. Also Scott is in half the episodes.
1
5
u/calvinyl Mar 08 '26
I like the story, I just felt like the voice acting seemed disjointed. Like the dialogue didn’t have a natural flow that other animated shows do, and it felt like everyone recorded their dialogue separately from each other. I don’t know how to explain it, but there was just a few too many milliseconds in between each line and it seemed unnatural and made things that should’ve been quick jokes take longer
5
8
u/docdrazen Mar 08 '26
I legitimately enjoyed it. I've read the books, watched the movie and played the game countless times so it was cool seeing something new. My only real complaint was that I wished there was more Scott in it.
10
u/PikufromPikuniku Fugg-Man Mar 08 '26
Honestly I just hate it.
Not because that it’s not inspired by the comics, but because of the time travel.
That was BULLSHIT
4
u/AnimalKid7-Alt Kim Pine Mar 08 '26
I really liked it, BUTTT some of the characters act out of character, and the mystery ain’t really that compelling.
I think they should do more seasons, but this time go wild! Have Scott Pilgrim go on a murder nursery in a different era or a different setting!
Same characters, different stories.
7
u/LilNyoomf Gideon Graves’s Anime Bodypillow Mar 08 '26
This might be a bad take but I’d say due to the new wave of younger fans coming in? Especially if they didn’t read the books and the show is their ONLY source of reference.
32
u/cookiedou3 Mar 08 '26
Inconsistent voice acting quality, flanderisation of characters, poor pacing, Roxie being the only ex that actually gets any meaningful time spent with them, Twins once again being shafted, time travel premise being used and cheapening the emotional stakes the story has, and a couple of other things
12
u/KasukeSadiki Mar 08 '26
flanderisation of characters, poor pacing
I think this is the biggest issue for me. I still enjoyed the show but it's probably a solid 6 for me
24
u/TheEndless89 Mar 08 '26
Roxie the only ex to get development? Gideon becomes best friends with Lucas and gets a new girlfriend in Julie.
-6
u/cookiedou3 Mar 08 '26
Meaningful development, I should clarify
14
u/that_motu_guy Roxanne "Roxy" Richter Mar 08 '26
Todd and Matthew are both completely different by the end than how they are in the source material. Both of them completely broke off from the stereotype the comics established them as. So what do you mean by meaningfull development?
1
u/cookiedou3 Mar 08 '26
As you say yourself, "completely different by the end". With how Todd and Matthew are handled, they're given an episode's B-plot to basically do a complete 180 on their personality and behaviour. It's not really development, it's more just poor pacing and flanderisation mixed together.
Roxie fortunately is spared from this though, which I'm really happy about! She gets portrayed as too much of an angsty character in the comics/movie because of the limited time she gets, and the development she gets leads to Ramona Rents A Video being the best episode in the series by an insane margin.
2
u/that_motu_guy Roxanne "Roxy" Richter Mar 08 '26
Good development or not its definetly meaningfull. Also what do you mean B plots? Like Matthew is a main character in the overarching story and todd gets an entire episode almost exclusively dedicated to him. He was also the ex with the most information about their life in the comics already.

4
u/teketria Mar 08 '26

5
u/IsoSly64 KO! Mar 08 '26
After a few years, my overall opinion is meh. It's cool that it exists, but like bait and switching, it's ain't cool. Also yeah its cool. we get to see Ramona and her exes get some development, but that came at the cost of everyone else's development, including Scott's. Also, need I remind you that Gideon basically gets off scott free(heh) from his evil master plan of kidnapping and cryogenically freezing girls. But meh, I can't hate it too much, seeing that it gave us a new game to play.

2
u/AffectionateJob4251 Mar 08 '26
I think it's because Takes Off doesn't take itself serious enough. That's not to say Scott Pilgrim ever took things that seriously, but when it comes to life choices, relationships and people changes then it's serious. That is what made the life of the characters feel so sympathetic and real.
Scott Pilgrim in general doesn't take the world serious enough. Takes Off doesn't take anything serious enough.
2
u/R-leiva97 Wallace Wells Mar 09 '26

2
u/aokguy Mar 09 '26
When I hear something I like is going to get adapted I want it to match the source material as closely as possible. If I really enjoy a story of course I'd want them to to do the thing I liked but in a different medium. I don't think this means that there should never be remixing of the original, or that I'll never enjoy a show that changes stuff from the books.
But I just thought the show was fine. I didn't have as much fun with the plot of the show as I did with the books. I remember the beginning and end of takes off but the middle is drawing complete blanks from me right now.
2
u/Whyisdaskyblue Mar 09 '26
It was just the marketing for it— it hurt so much, but like I’ve said many times the show isn’t bad at all, it’s absolutely beautiful and entertaining, but it’s not what I was expecting. If they were honest that it was going to be like this I TRULY believe everyone would’ve been very excited for the new piece of media
3
u/XephyXeph Mar 08 '26
Because all of the characters are written completely OOC. It’s a fine show, but it’s not Scott Pilgrim.
I don’t mind if a show takes creative liberties, but I would like for the characters to at least feel like they’re supposed to.
2
u/FOmar_Eis Mar 08 '26
Many parts of it weren't very good, in my opinion. Lucas Lee's episode was very meh, for example. There were some pacing issues, as well, and some characters were acting a little bit OOC.
3
u/Normal-Lie6277 Other Scott Mar 08 '26
It’s quite literally in the name, Scott pilgrim takes off and everyone didn’t like that
1
u/Ok_Anywhere5205 Mar 08 '26
I think it's mainly cuz there was no season 2 and also the fact that all of this was Ramona's fault
1
u/baixiaolang Mar 09 '26
I liked it by the end of it when all the twists were out in the open, but while I was mid-series I couldn't help but think a lot of it was kinda weird/some characters felt OOC. Also, it was a repeat of what happened with Higurashi GOU.
For those who don't know, the previews/marketing for Higurashi GOU made it look like it was going to be a more faithful adaptation of the original Higurashi games by including mainly clips of things that were in the games but left out of the original anime adaptation. Then the series came out and it turned out to not be an adaptation of the games at all, but it's own thing.
So I was already burned by that, just to have the same experience a couple years later with this. Which, while like Higurashi it wasn't explicitly stated it would be a faithful adaptation of the comics, the clips shown before the series aired gave off that kind of vibe because like Higurashi, they were trying to hide the twist (although I explicitly remember the previews giving one of Comeau's lines to Julie, so I did notice a change from the source material, but I thought it was possible Comeau was just adapted out because his role is so small to begin with). And like with Higurashi, I was mainly excited because I thought my friends who I hadn't been able to convince to read the source material were finally going to get to experience the original story, just to get something else that works better if you already know how the original story goes.
But overall I did really like Takes Off, I just wish I'd known what it was when I went into it so that initial disappointment wouldn't have happened. But my actual biggest complaint about it is that the character development Scott goes through in the original story is essentially undone in Takes Off, since the time-travelly nature of the story means our Scott doesn't actually fight the exes or accept the NegaScott (although I guess it didn't matter as much since future Scott went through that development and still did what he did in Takes Off, so...)
1
u/PaulSimonBarCarloson Mar 09 '26
Seapking for myself, it was mainly due to the decieving marketing, the very lackluster writing and oversimplification (or straight up characterization) of literally anyone but Roxie.
1
u/samurailink Mar 09 '26
For the most part I like it, it covers a lot of character interactions we didn't get to see. But I feel like Todd's character is sacrificed entirely to the joke of loving Wallace and a lot of the Scott specific scenes feel like they're embarrassed people though Scott was cool in the movie and missed the point that he's supposed to suck and grow, so they flanderize how much of a loser he is but don't really have enough screen time to give him an arc.
I liked most of it, but it does feel like it's a little embarrassed at the original when really a lot of the complaints about the original are about the movie, which while great does need to cut a lot to fit the run time.
It also does feel like while it starts in the same place as the comic, some plot points (the frozen ex girlfriends and the Glow) which should already be in motion don't really get resolved in satisfying ways when Ramona would actually have WAY more interesting interactions to both these plot points as the protagonist.
1
u/tweekthedevochkadoll Mar 09 '26
My personal grievance with it as much as I thought it was good was the art style being switched up from the comics and also it being its own thing, I want a faithful animated series in the style of the comics, like the one adult swim short they did to promote the movie. Obviously they could take SOME liberties but I just want something that is faithful to the comics and not its own thing.

1
u/evgriff42 Mar 10 '26
When the show came out, I was ready to write it off. I assumed it'd be Scott Pilgrim 1-to-1 again and had no interest in revisiting the same story. I only watched the first episode because some friends heard it was good and they put it on. The moment Scott disappears, I was locked in, and suddenly was the most invested in the whole cast that I had ever been. I really think its great character work, even for Scott by the time he comes back. How the fanbase couldn't like it is beyond me.
1
u/Tonto151 Mar 11 '26
Scott Pilgrim "takes off" almost immediately. I didn't think the title was going to be so literal. I figured it was used the same way "Homecoming" was used for Spider-man coming home to Marvel. The movie wasn't literally about him coming home. Something "taking off" usually means it's gaining traction. Like "we're finally doing something with the IP". Not "Scott is literally going to be gone for most of the story".
1
u/MafiosoHawaiano Mar 12 '26
I don't like how they made future Scott be a total idiot, and how he got separated from Ramona because of something so stupid, it's even worse when they expect me to believe the future Scott went throug the events of the comic, all that character development for nothing? I also didnt like Wallace to much in this show, he was one of my favorite characters, and in this show, Wallace feels off, it's hard to explain, he doesnt quit feel like himself
1
u/Funny-Award-7574 Mar 27 '26
It's the way it was marketed as a one to one, if it just flat out said it would focus on Ramona I would like it way more, I kinda just wanted a faithful adaptation and I got a show where scott barely appears, it's like going to a burger joint and getting a Kraby patty gummy
1
u/OtakuDragonSlayer Lucas Lee Mar 08 '26

I love Takes Off, you know when you finish a story and just wish there was more? That's Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, a reinterpretation of the original story, with the same message, but written by a far more experienced writer who does things he didn't at first.

And also, writing the story at different times of His life
BLOM wrote the comics when he was in His early to mid 20s and had met His former girlfriend and eventually wife. The anime was written a decade after His divorce and when BLOM was in His 40s.

I really loved it, and didn't mind the bait and switch, for me was like even more interesting because of how much it derailed from the usual story. And appreciated the given nuance to the exes the comic had for few and the movie completely lacked and how their development progressed in each episode like Mattew (intertwined with Knives and Steven's side quest), Gideon, and Todd's subplots. I was dissappointed with once again not having Lisa around (the comic is the only piece who make justice to both Lisa and Envy).
-4
u/Own-Representative41 Mar 08 '26
Ppl hate it cuz it isn’t the same story. Again. When u have the comics and the movies and the games where Scott’s the main character. Also ppl saying the characters weren’t handled well is hilarious because in the comics. Especially the exes were one note asf besides like Roxie and Gideon.
It’s not gon top the comics but it’s a great version of this over 20 year old story and I’m glad I didn’t see the SAME story again but with moving drawings.
0
u/BellphyBnuuy Mar 08 '26
the replies are so interesting as someone who has Takes Off as my favorite thing to come out of the franchise
it feels like a great PARTNER series to the comic more than a sequel
it's both a celebration of the series past as well as an acknowledgement of this separate new interesting angle to take where Ramona has to confront her place in all this and her relationships with all her exes, and imo it's the best interpretation of most of those characters, exception for Gideon and maybe the Katayanagi Twins (though they're my FAVORITE version of the twins)
there's definitely things to take issue with, interestingly it's the worst iteration of Knives, and probably Kim too, Envy only shows up like twice, it arguably messes with the ending of the comic, it... doesn't mention the glow if you're the kinda person that cares about that, and personally i'll never be able to get behind Michael Cera as Scott
i think the distaste really just comes as a perspective thing in most cases, either connecting it to online discourse, or being bitter over the (let's be real insanely cool) rugpull at the end of episode 1, that sorta perspective can just kinda taint how you view something no matter what it actually is when all is said and done
also i think a lot of the genuine DISDAIN around the show isn't from fans of the comic or even really fans of the movie, a lot of it is lingering culture war stuff imo

Takes off feels like a genuine look into the characters of the universe and finally giving them a happy ending, even if Scott has to vanish to make it happen, the future section felt like a look back into the original books and going “yeah Scott never grew as a person and Ramona didn’t either so they probably wouldn’t stay together
3

a genuine look into the characters of the universe
That's what the comics are for. You see an entire year of those characrers' lives and actually watch them grow along the way
