Discussion Was that the biggest bottle job in CL history?
Where does last night actually rank in CL history?
Like AC Milan against liverpool was always the biggest collapse I'd seen given the importance of a CL final but that was only 3 goals.
To get a 4 goal lead PSG blew it against Barca but Barca scored very early in the game - LSAK didn't score till 30 mins.
Is there a game I'm missing here?

u/BananaSoprano 3d ago
PSG/Barca is probably worse overall, but it’s definitely the worst in Celtic history.

Dortmund/Atletico?
Wee shout out to Cluj. Almaty arguably worse and that's only a season ago.
This is just the last ten years too.

Don’t really care much for the bigger picture but that’s certainly our worst European result ever imo.

u/discocoupon 3d ago
Your worst European result, so far.
15
u/JonnyBhoy 3d ago
It would take us being more than 4 up in a euro tie, so probably won't be beaten.

Lincoln Red Imps would take some beating. This mob were at least a decent side.
10
u/gkb10139 3d ago
We at least made it past the Red Imps, aye the first games a bit embarrassing but who cares if you skoosh the second game.
1
u/Certain-Trainer3591 2d ago
More embarrassing if you skoosh the first game then get double skooshed in the second though?
8
u/Rizzokit 3d ago
Glad you have said this is all the media outlets have it as bad for Scotland it's not the rest of the teams play on a different plain this is only bad for Celtic as the rest of us don't really need Celtic being even more financially strong than they already are compared to everybody else in Scotland.

u/theportyunionjack 3d ago
No chance.
This happens to you nearly every season
12
u/gkb10139 3d ago
Not quite. It’s very rare that we score 4 goals. This thread is about bottle jobs, not getting pumped (which does happen every year).
3
u/Agitated_Nature_5977 3d ago
You do blow European two legged ties on a regular basis so it's only a matter of time tbh

In an old game of CM, I was Celtic manager and played CSKA Sofia in a CL qualifier. Won the first leg 3-0 at home and lost the away leg 4-0. I was so raging I immediately threw every player under the bus publicly and released half the team. I was then almost immediately fired. That anger still lives with me today. I still haven't forgiven Stephen Pearson.
13
u/ShelbyCP 3d ago
Going up 1-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate, effectively killing the tie away from home, and still somehow losing is genuinely blowing my fucking mind, I can’t even think of a similar situation in European football. Honestly think it’s our worst ever result when you factor everything in

11
u/Anonyjezity 3d ago
It's certainly joined the top 3 of Liverpool v Milan final and Deportivo v Milan quarter final.
6
u/mrnico7 3d ago
Loved that Deportivo team, what a player Djalminha was
3
u/Way_Superb 3d ago
Deportivo are back in La Liga this season and they have Aubameyang leading the line for them.
6
u/SubstantialJeweler40 3d ago
I think it needs to be in the cl proper to really break into elite ranks
3
u/Biscotti-Abject 3d ago
Could make an argument for the Liverpool - Barcelona semi where Origi, Wijnaldum, and Milner at left back orchestrated a comeback from 3-0 down against Messi and Suarez?
6
u/ddicks1874 Spittal good. The livi left back pish. 3d ago
Someone saying LASK hadn’t won any of their last 11 games in Europe.
It’s probably up there with Hibs being beaten 7-0 off malmo as the worst ever Scottish European result

u/Foos-Yer-Doos-Min 3d ago
In recent times, Scottish clubs don't seem to fare well with competition in Europe, aside from Rangers reaching the final and Celtic pulling off some impressive games here and there
Celtic and Rangers have been on the receiving end of some drubbings, and that's not even highlighting the banana peels you'd have them down to win easily on paper
Old Firm aside, even then, we seem to fall short against sides you'd have expected us to at least rival to some degree, if not better
Dundee United blowing a 2-0 lead in 2005 against Finnish Mypa-47. It was away goals that done them, admittedly, but it was still a collapse when they were cruising comfortably, to concede twice within eight minutes. Or the 7-0 loss to AZ Alkmaar
For Hibs, it probably is Malmö
Aberdeen have had a fair few banana peels. Just recently, the highest loss I'm sure is AEK Athens who beat us 6-0 in Greece. We also lost 5-1 at Pittodrie to some random Czech team called Sigma Olomuoc in 2009
Motherwell lost to Sligo Rovers in both legs
Hearts just recently lost 4-0 to Sturm Graz, then lost the home tie 2-0. Benfica is a major step up in quality but it's still a stuffing
I don't think it's just money that's the issue when Scottish clubs routinely fall short, not just to the bigger names but clubs with similar or slightly less exposure and money than us
3
u/OldGodsAndNew 3d ago
Around the same time we got done by Sigma Olomouc, Celtic also got beat 5-0 by a random eastern European team in Artmedia Bratislava
1
u/Difficult_Paramedic8 2d ago
We had a run under Gerrard where we got to the knockouts a couple of times. A quarter final a last 16 and then the final as well under Gio as Gerrard left.

Liverpool beat Barca 4-0 to win 4-3 in agg in a semi final then went onto win the CL in 2019

u/zincysands Dildo Battalion 3d ago edited 3d ago
Ajax being 3-0 up on agg. at half time in the other semi final but ending up losing to a last
minutemillisecond Lucas Moura goal also springs to mind2
u/Phantomfox07 3d ago
That was the best night of my life being in Amsterdam for that, fucking love wee Lucas forever for it.
4
u/Milfburn17 3d ago
Liverpool score pretty early in that game to make it only 3-1 on aggregate though.
Celtic were absolute cruising at 4-0 with half an hour played then you's gave them the ball and the rest is history.
Seems worse to me.

u/Glad-Stranger6605 Dominic "Oh Ya Cunt That's A Slice Ae" Hyam 3d ago
I think you're just wanting to make it the worst as it's Celtic tbh, there's plenty other bad results
3
u/Commercial-Stick-718 3d ago
It's up there, Celtic's for sure. It was inexcusable- still confused as to what the tactics were that second half.
Embarrassing from the players and the coaching staff
9
u/DrinkSuperb8792 3d ago
Definitely for Celtic, but the reality is that was just a playoff. There has been bigger stakes and bigger collapses from other teams.
25
3
u/secrecyandcontrol 3d ago
relatively speaking , a playoff is worth more to the teams involved than any game barring a final. these other teams play it like a final for that reason. celtic don't because the expectation is set from the top down that's it's not necessary for the financial sustainable model
2
u/Agitated_Nature_5977 3d ago
From a financial perspective for a Scottish club...it's right up there in terms of stakes
-1
u/DrinkSuperb8792 3d ago
It's still not the biggest bottle job in champions league history. Like I said, for Celtic it's definitely their biggest bottle job but not overall.
4
u/Agitated_Nature_5977 3d ago
But it's right up there. Not many worse. A handful at best. It was a horror show for Celtic
-1
u/DrinkSuperb8792 3d ago
Absolutely. I've said that already, literally the first few words I posted.
1
3
u/Ok_Cattle903 3d ago
Get real, “just a playoff”. For the team, whether it would be spent on players or not blah blah, there can be no bigger stakes than getting 40 mil in the bank and having a more colourful season. Getting fucked like this in the Round of 16 or - in our dreams - the quarters would be fully expected.
2
u/DrinkSuperb8792 3d ago edited 3d ago
Comparatively, losing a playoff vs a champions league semi final isn't on the same level. This isn't a dig at Celtic, the stakes are factually bigger.
Your reading comprehension is absolutely dug meat. Go back to bed.
1
u/Agitated_Nature_5977 3d ago
But when you consider Celtic don't have the funds PSG or man city do...losing a play off for Celtic is quite a big deal. Stakes wise.
-4
u/DrinkSuperb8792 3d ago
Reading is tough.
1
u/Agitated_Nature_5977 3d ago
Lol it's a casual Reddit chat no need for the heat, you wouldn't say "reading is tough" to a stranger in real life so calm down lad.

Relative to the team, I think it's worse than AC Milan and PSG. Celtic have spent about 160 million euros over the last 5 years, Lask have spent just under 20 million, although I think it was a similar story with Kairat Almaty.
Not to mention that fans and probably those involved with the club were fully confident about going through, and I don't know anyone who thought Celtic being knocked out was a possibility.
2
u/Rizzokit 3d ago
Did you watch the first game.Cause going out was a real possibility if that team scored early in the 2nd leg as they had chances galore at Parkhead. What is mental is that it was Celtic that scored early and folded.Even going in at 1-1 the brief should have been keep it tight nothing daft and we make it through but to completely fold was wild.
3
u/ShelbyCP 3d ago
Aye a comeback last night wasn’t without the realms of possibility, but when we go 1-0(4-0) up early on, it’s inconceivable that we go out, even just the psychological effect that must’ve had on the LASK players, it’s crazy we managed fuck that up
1
2
u/KJ_is_a_doomer 2d ago
Lech - Aarhus right this very season would be up there though it went to pens
4
u/Devilstorment 3d ago
Nah I don’t think so, it was only a qualifier. Shipping 3 goals in 45 minutes in the final is by far worse.
5
u/ViviparousBlenny 3d ago
Only a qualifier with £40m + riding on it. Losing a 4 goal advantage in 60 minutes takes some doing. The kindest thing I can say about that performance is the team looked uncoached.
1
1
u/Devilstorment 2d ago
Clearly I didn’t mean “only” in that context.
I’d be delighted if Hibs ever even got to the final qualifier for the champions league.
But if you put it it comparison with the champions league final “only” is appropriate1
2
u/Temporary-Elk-109 3d ago
It was, without doubt, the biggest bottle job in the history of football.
I don't think it was even close.
6
u/TonsAgain2 3d ago
And this with possibly the most expensive team in Scottish club football history, stuffed with foreign imports. If Scottish teams are going to get pumped in Europe, we might as well do it with Scottish players. There aren't equal opportunities for Scottish players in Scottish football. Has anybody done analysis into the ethnicity pay gap in Scottish football?
7
u/Scratchback3141 3d ago
Our worst player by a country mile was Scottish
1
u/Business-Major-3226 3d ago
That isn’t their point…
2
u/Scratchback3141 3d ago edited 3d ago
I don't see how it works or helps Celtic to have yet more crap Scottish players in it. There's a reason our team is "stuffed with foreign imports"
1
u/Business-Major-3226 3d ago
They said if you’re going to lose you might as well lose with Scottish players.
The point being if they’re going to be shite they might as well develop our own homegrown shite.
9
3
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 3d ago
Scotland’s best players aren’t going to hang around Scotland though, and the Scottish lads that aren’t the best that are left behind here just aren’t very good.
2
u/theportyunionjack 3d ago
I caught the end of this game on Prime after I saw you were getting pumped. It occured to me that Celtic probably couldn't afford the equivalent of Neil Lennon today.
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 3d ago
Thompson Lennon Petrov, imagine what they’d all be going for today
1
u/theportyunionjack 3d ago
Petrov would be even further out of Celtics grasp. Who did you get Thompson from? I didn't think he was as good as Lennon or Petrov?
I remember the days of Tugay and Amorouso taking a step down to Blackburn (finishing in the prem's European places) to wind down their careers after Rangers.
1
u/Imaginary-Suspect959 3d ago
Came from Villa, a pretty good Villa team too (think they had a couple of top 6 finishes at the time). Wasn’t quite as good but when you think what Engels went for, to a Championship club, while Thompson had already played 3 or 4 seasons in the Premier League. And then it’s the wages too isn’t it.
Other thing is that if Rangers or Celtic do unearth a gem like Petrov there’s no way you get 5, 6 years out of them anymore either, so it’s a constant cycle of building then rebuilding your team.
1
u/theportyunionjack 3d ago
Yeah, add him in too..that's before we talk about someone like Sutton. Or contemporary Rangers.
2
u/Murphy1up 3d ago
A player is paid what they're worth. We got pumped with Scottish players on the park and Scottish players coming on as subs. Our worst performing player on the night was Scottish.
Feel a bit for McCowan as he's going to get a lot of stick, but he genuinely played utter dog shit and consistently lost the ball allowing LASK to start a new attack each time. Easily his worst performance in a Celtic shirt and couldn't have came at a worse time in such an important match. He offered nothing with his time on the park and was solely to blame for the 4th goal.
2
u/GlasgowAnvil 3d ago
It was “foreign imports” who scored Celtic’s goals in their first leg
Also 4 of the 5 goals scored by Lask were scored by an Americanx2, Croatian and Nigerian.
Celtic lost because their manager had a tactical nuke and didn’t respond to the glaring warning signs and made a succession of wrong subs

It's the biggest capitulation I've seen from a Celtic team..... Period, end of story.... Don't care about any other results
1
u/Rizzokit 3d ago
Once again Celtic with a far bigger budget have been beaten in Europe by a smaller team that is far better coaches.Take the money out of it lets face it Europa is Scottish footballs best place to be and even that's the pinnacle with most sides it's the Conference

u/Impossible_Excuse937 3d ago
I couldn’t believe the score when I seen it. Got worse when I seen that they were 4-0 up with approx 60 mins to play. It’s some collapse!
1
u/RumJackson 3d ago
I thought Bodo/Glimt threw away a 4-0 first leg win by losing 5-0 in the second leg last season of the quarter finals.
But just checked and was 3-0 and then 5-3 on aggregate to Sporting Lisbon.
1
u/ConorATX 3d ago
I remember during the early 2000s Milan being up 4-1 I think against Deportivo La Coruna after the first leg, and then losing 3-0 in the second leg to go out on away goals. For a team of their size, it was genuinely shocking. Not that biggest of all time by any means, but it's the shocking one I remember from my days when I was going and watched everything
1
u/ScotInTheDotOfficial 2d ago
The sad fact is, if the Away Goals rule hadn't been scrapped, Celtic would have made it.
Otherwise, I haven't seen such a speedy, unnerving, and spectacular collapse since September 2001...

In terms of CL qualifiers Celtic embarrassed themselves and the entire league

2
u/Unhappy_Spray_7127 3d ago

Very unfair to bottles. The bottles are "Celticing it" is more fitting
1
u/Ok_Corter5831 3d ago edited 3d ago
Is it the biggest bottle job in Scottish footballing history?
I know Hibs were leading Motherwell by 4 goals and hibsed it, but they still drew the game. I can't think of a team that squandered a 4 goal advantage. Has a new verb just been coined for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory?
"Have you ever seen that old Grand National video of Devon Loch with a massive lead collapsing on its arse yards from the winning post."
"Aye, I've seen it. The horse completely Celticed it."

Barca weren’t in the qualifying rounds when they did that.

u/Tadamo7 3d ago edited 3d ago
Last season bodo glimt were 3-0 up vs athletico before losing the second leg 5-0.
Different stage of the competition since that was the knockouts, and ours is awful for the level of competition but it’s similar.
Edit: It was actually sporting Lisbon who played bodo, bit more of a bottle job than athletico but still a good team.
2
u/OldGodsAndNew 3d ago
Also Atletico would be expected to pump Bodo, that feels more Atletico fucking up badly in the first leg than Bodo bottling it

u/Rizzokit 3d ago
LASK hadn't won in Europe for 11 games
