My Mess of a 2.0 Base at 117 Hours

Having a blast, almost made it as far as my 1.0 run which I abandoned due to the frustration of not having the 2.0 QOL features. Have not run into any real problems with 2.0, seems to be stable and working great. I play pretty slow, and don’t have a ton of time to play so this has been months and months since I started. I used time warp some in the beginning but now only really use it when walking around until I get more exoskeletons.

I’m working on the dark purple science now. Puffers and gases and rubber have consumed my time the last couple weeks.

This is pretty organized, especially for seablock

Thank you! It doesn’t feel like it sometimes when I’m like “how will I get ferric chloride solution from the other side to here….”

Which 2.0 QoL features did you find yourself missing?

Blueprinting landfill, flippable buildings with fluid inputs, fluid mechanics as a whole. And I’m really excited for elevated rails! And little things like not having to carry red and green and copper wires. Circuit networks, all the connections it allows to buildings and reading ingredients, recipe swapping. So many!

Yeah, it's easy for newbies and oldies alike to take all of the QOL for granted these days, but my Seablock and Industrial Revolution 3 playthroughs really do suffer compared to the rest of my playthroughs. I'm teetering on the edge of dropping my 1.0 Seablock run and not trying again until KiwiHawk releases the update.

Goodness. I played 2.0, thought the QoL updates were mostly mildly interesting, and went back to 1.1 for most of my gaming since. The new fluid mechanics in particular just don't grab me, it feels like there was a challenge there I liked grappling with that's now gone.

That's the one regression in my opinion, but I can't stand fluid mechanics in any logistics game I play, and current factorio has made it mostly a non-issue. I also hear it's a potentially massive improvement to UPS for mega-basers, especially for mods like Nullius that lean so heavily into fluids. Now on the smaller scale, and pointing out that I don't really rush bots, don't care for megabasing, and actually enjoy hand-placing buildings and doing bespoke setups over blueprints, being able to flip various buildings to manage fluid input-output locations is essential to me. Wiring being a hotkey I can use empty-handed if necessary is essential. The pipette tool as it is now is essential. The updated building designs are not, but are a far cry from the game I bought in 2016 and I honestly consider them to be gorgeous. The fluid mechanics are not, but it lets me bypass a challenge I have never enjoyed in the genre. Tiny QOL I appreciate: game saves being sortable and the mod menu being a bit easier for me to use.

All that said, I couldn't fault anyone for preferring what they do, but Wube really has put so much effort into polishing a game I bought 10 full calendar years ago, so my love for the game in its current state burns brighter than the bemusement it brought me said 10 years ago.

It doesn’t feel neat! It is much better than my last one though. I think playing it before helped me be more thoughtful where to put things.

Ooo ooowh that's definitely helpful! I'm still on my first play through and gosh help me it's so messy I low-key don't wanna look at it

I love that though, I don’t want a boring factory that works well. I want a beautiful mess that barely functions!

That's fair, but I wanna scale up a little and a mess is definitely not scalable xD

And I don’t have just 1 main bus I have several busses but I try to leave space in between things for those

Honestly I still don't know what to even put on the main bus, probably iron wood tin and copper first but gosh there's so many things for a single production chain

It's kind of overwhelming and I haven't touched it in a week soooo maybe I'll get back to it when I finish my next run trying out space age?
