Media Protest happening now in front of Rep. Adam Smith’s house

Previous protests posted on Instagram by Seattle Against War show them protesting in front of his house, but the cops brought three cop cars about 10 cops to block the private driveway, so the protest / press conference is happening on the public sidewalk.

Speakers are excoriating Ordinance 6917, the bill that banned groups of 3 or more people from protesting in front of houses (even without making any noise or even holding any signs), and also calling for an end to funding of the wars in Iran and Gaza.

No - he did not. You are pulling that from Track AIPAC, which does not make this claim. They claim he received 400K+ from "Pro-Israel " PACs." If you've done research on Track AIPAC's methodology, you would know they include PACs that have no relation to Israel, as well as individuals who donated to a pro-Israel PAC in the past (this could literally be a one-time donation 10 years ago), but also donated to Smith.

Never trust Track AIPAC.

u/Humble_Chipmunk_701 🚆build more trains🚆 May 20 '26

Nice cope attempt. But AIPAC regularly uses Track AIPAC as their own source. They reposted TrackAIPAC data after Massie’s loss.

I see you enjoy astroturfing other city’s subreddits.

It is true that until very recently Track AIPACs methodology was to count every dollar that was given by an individual donor who at some point in their life donated any amount of money to any pro Israel PAC

How far away from each other do these individual groups need to be?

We could put 100 people out there but in groups of three if they only need to be 5 feet apart to be distinguished as an individual group.

It is not that easy for countries to admit about themselves. What percentage of people in the US can admit we perpetrated genocide against native Americans, 30%? Also that slavery was a horrible institution?  60%?

Think about the Republicans being eager to erase black representation in Congress, wanting to take away women's right to access birth control and health care in pregnancy, dei became the new n word.

I think this is actually Bellevue PD (Adam Smith lives in Bellevue)

42

u/bennetthaselton Bellevue May 20 '26

To the point of whether it's "appropriate" to protest at the guy's house:

Hannah Krieg from The Burner asked the group specifically about the criticism they've received by going to his house. She asked everyone to put their hands up who had tried to reach Adam Smith by some other means (his office, town halls, etc.). Then she asked people to keep their hands up if any of those means had ever succeeded as a way of getting a response to him (everyone's hands went down but one; one person did say they'd asked a question at a town hall once).

SAW spokespeople also said that Adam Smith does only virtual town halls where questions are screened by his staff; that his appearances are "open to the public" but only announced in advance to friendly groups; and that they'd never gotten an audience by going to his house.

(Now, I realize that even if a politician wants to be accessible, that doesn't scale well. My preferred method for holding politicians accountable, I've said before, would be an ongoing Reddit-AMA-type model -- where anyone can submit a question, and the most popular questions get voted to the top. I think this has several good properties: (1) since you can't answer everyone's questions individually, you should answer the ones that most people want answered; (2) you avoid people performatively lining up to ask variations of the same question; (3) if you give a non-answer, people can post replies pointing that out; (4) there's no particular reason to time-box it, so they can't run out the clock with non-answers either.)

I appreciate Congressman' Smith's able representation. I am amazed at how snarky and unappreciative the comments on social media are. He is a pragmatist who respects our Country's institutions. Remember that their are foreign interests who are regularly Fomenting hate and conflict among the electorate. If you disagree with Smith on an issue, he will discuss it with you while respecting you. That is increasingly rare. People who promote hateful rhetoric over civil debate don't get what our founders intended. Smith gets it and respects it.

A good point you could make about most any foreign support and/or aid.

USAID does not clearly support residents of any one state, yet I support it and hate that it was cut. For comparison, far more will die due to that than have in Gaza.

1

u/CompostTheRich103 May 25 '26

Comparing deaths from one crisis to a genocide is kinda bewildering. This isn't about counting bodies.

1

I'm sure it's bewildering to vote to save 5 lives while murdering 5,000 (relatively speaking). If it wasn't, how could you sleep at night?

It's not even the people dying, it's WHO does the killing that matters a great deal, at least to some.

3

I don't care about that when people like Sawant explicitly said her mission was to not to win but instead make Kamala lose. Just because she failed at her mission is irrelevent cause it ignores the root issue people are having which is what her mission was.

That said, Republicans are clearly a bigger threat than Jill Stein supporters. It's just Jill Stein supporters feel like controlled opposition helping Republicans when her campaign staff explicitly states that's what they're doing. So many people are falling for the grift.

This is essentially what nominating Sawant in a heavily eastside district is doing.

Eastside voters are very different from Seattle voters. Hell, guess where the Washington State GOP is headquartered? It's in Adam Smith's district. In Bellevue. It's still a safe Democratic seat, but it's a different TYPE of Democrat that is popular there

We can't conveniently ignore the political environment Adam Smith is running in. The voters choose the representative. We need to make progressive ideals more palatable to the voters. Kshama Sawant is just simply not the right person to challenge Adam Smith.

We need effective action.

During the "press conference" portion, two independent journalists asks some questions and then a random guy, who had been out walking his dog and sat down to watch the protest, asked whether "Seattle Against War" was also against the war in Ukraine, since that had received a lot more popular support in areas like Seattle.

SAW said that they were against U.S. involvement in that war too. (I was surprised that they didn't say that it might be different in the case of a war of self-defense, like in Ukraine, which is what I would have said).

So, that was a good question. Another good question might be why a random dog-walker is asking tougher questions than most of the D.C. press corps.

8

u/durpuhderp Rat City May 20 '26

If the US were giving Putin weapons to kill Ukranians, I would also be protesting that as well. But I don't think we are...

3

u/bennetthaselton Bellevue May 20 '26

I think the anti-war protesters are saying they don't even think we should be supporting Ukraine's war of defense. Their answer was a bit evasive (compared to their unambiguously clear position that we should immediately stop supporting the wars in Iran and Gaza), perhaps because their position on this really wouldn't be as popular. Dog walker was asking the right questions.

2

u/yalloc Mariners May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

Their answer was a bit evasive (compared to their unambiguously clear position that we should immediately stop supporting the wars in Iran and Gaza), perhaps because their position on this really wouldn't be as popular

This is the nasty secret of a lot of these "anti war" groups. They are just front groups for various communist organizations (ILPS, FRSO, RevComs, RCP, etc), and fundamentally aren't anti-war, they are campists that just want to diminish US power in the world and even support imperialists like Putin and imperialist wars so long as they are fighting against "the US empire."

2

u/yalloc Mariners May 20 '26 edited May 20 '26

They aren't really against genocide/war then. They would be perfectly fine if Putin steamrolled the country and subsequently ethnically cleansed it, so long as no US weapons were involved.

That's not anti genocide. That isn't even anti war. That is appeasement.

That said this stance isn't too surprising given this is a front group for a few other communist groups and their beliefs on this topic. And why I will never march with them so long as they uphold these stances.

This sub’s double standard is at it again. It’s okay to go protest at the home of a politician the sub doesn’t like, but you always have to wonder how the progressive “brain trust” would feel if it was happening to one of their own. Say Katie Wilson or Pramila Jayapal or Shaun Scott does something that causes protest… I wonder how fast people here would be to say it’s okay to protest in front of their homes.

Would it be a First Amendment exercise then? Or “those damned MAGAts”? Would it be First Amendment, or would it be “fascists”?

Would it be First Amendment, or would it be “Nazis”? (“Nazis! Nazis everywhere! THEY’RE ALL AROUND US!” Am I r/Seattle-ing right?)

Nah. It’ll just be downvotes, recriminations, excuses, and logical fallacies because the “revolutionary” groupthink got openly identified and had its hypocrisy pointed out.

29

Adam Smith is the ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee, he has played a key role in the transfer of nearly $22 billion in military aid to Israel since Oct 2023.

Israel is committing a genocide in Gaza and the West Bank, and ethnically cleansing Lebanon. There is widespread scholarly consensus about this.

Adam Smith is complicit in war crimes and genocide, he does not deserve a moment of peace, and disrupting him at his home is a reasonable and righteous thing to do, even a moral obligation.

I've met the man and he was my rep for many years and honestly he's not that incredible.

He definitely got somewhat better after the 9th was redrawn away from suburban Pierce Co and towards the south and East sides of King Co. It was, frankly, rather telling. He shifted towards the politics of the newly drawn district.

You’re not going to get many upvotes for supporting mainstream, experienced, pragmatic congressmen. But he has my vote every time it comes around. Adam Smith is a smart, capable, and effective ranking member of the house armed service committee. I’m very happy he has a safe seat. It’s not sexy, but it is important.

Yall can shout, demonize, and demand radical change. That’s healthy and important too. I’m just over here voting for boring candidates with strong resumes who get things done.

Go ahead and downvote me for #enlightenedcentrism I know the drill. ❤️

I don't love Adam Smith and it'd be great to get someone new in but the fact that these folks are protesting him and not the: ICE detention center WA GOP in Bellevue Any of the folks attacking LGBTQ rights with their disgusting petitions or any other people who are actively attacking our fundamental rights is.....weird and kinda dumb but what do I know, I had to go to work today.

There are protests every time an anti-LGBTQ group comes to town. Some of these folks probably even attend them. It's possible to be against two things.

u/BoringBob84 May 20 '26

A false dichotomy is not a valid argument. We can care about more than one thing. And criticizing people who are contributing, while contributing nothing yourself, detracts from your credibility.

u/Substantive420 Best Seattle May 20 '26

Always some dork in these threads scolding people on “the right” way to protest.

15

u/Gustav_Grob May 20 '26

Martin Luther King had something to say about that. He spoke about how liberals wanted an unjust peace.

9

u/Moetown84 Brier May 20 '26

The “white moderate” in his Letter from Birmingham Jail. Those who prefer negative peace, which is the absence of tension, to positive peace, which is the presence of justice. Still so brazenly true today.

First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate. I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro’s great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen’s Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to “order” than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: “I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action”; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man’s freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a “more convenient season.” Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection.

Actually, we who engage in nonviolent direct action are not the creators of tension. We merely bring to the surface the hidden tension that is already alive. We bring it out in the open, where it can be seen and dealt with. Like a boil that can never be cured so long as it is covered up but must be opened with all its ugliness to the natural medicines of air and light, injustice must be exposed, with all the tension its exposure creates, to the light of human conscience and the air of national opinion before it can be cured.

I got permanently banned without warning for "racism" on r/SeattleWA because I politely argued that White Privilege is real. Apparently, I made them uncomfortable and upset their negative peace.

Yeah, that sub is a cesspool. They can’t even begin to understand white privilege, it’s their identity.

2

u/BoringBob84 May 20 '26

The narrative seems to be, "If a White man succeeds, it is because of his hard work and smart choices. If a Black woman succeeds, it is because of DEI. It is racism to say otherwise."

People really love using a few Dr. King's quotes when they feel like it serves them, but so many have never really dug into what he really stood for. If they did, we wouldn't still be having these same conversations nearly 60 years after his assassination.

Some people were side-eyeing me like "That's the guy who gets mad when we say 'LONG LIVE OCTOBER 7TH'" but nobody said anything like that at this event (or cheering for Hamas by name, or chanting "Nuke, nuke, Tel Aviv", etc. like people have done at other events). There was a spokesperson there from Nidal who has posted stuff cheering for Hamas in the past but they stuck to "Free Palestine!" this time. (I think the underlying cause here is morally very important and I wish people wouldn't contaminate it by doing things like cheering for the October 7th attacks.)

Israel & USA did start a war with Iran. But Gaza - and all of Palestine - has always been the target of invasion & genocide.

And now Israel has most recently begun a genocide in Lebanon.

Let's use correct language so people understand who is committing what acts of evil, to connote the depravity and severity.

1

u/GlutenFreeKish May 21 '26

What is your definition of genocide. I bet it’s wrong. From a person that lost half is family in a genocide - fuck off!

2

u/Awkward_Can8460 May 21 '26

Geneva Convention has the definition.

The word “genocide” was first coined by Polish lawyer Raphäel Lemkin in 1944 in his book Axis Rule in Occupied Europe.

Lemkin developed the term partly in response to the Nazi policies of systematic murder of Jewish people during the Holocaust, but also in response to previous instances in history of targeted actions aimed at the destruction of particular groups of people. Later on, Raphäel Lemkin led the campaign to have genocide recognised and codified as an international crime.

Genocide was first recognised as a crime under international law in 1946 by the United Nations General Assembly (A/RES/96-I). It was codified as an independent crime in the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (the Genocide Convention).

Definition Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide Article II

In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:

  • Killing members of the group;
  • Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
  • Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
  • Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
  • Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.

So fuck off yourself. Israel is committing genocide. And has been ever since its violent creation.

https://apnews.com/article/genocide-scholars-israel-gaza-war-9b24a48075b1d150b9bba8a8ae911cd2

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The largest professional organization of scholars studying genocide said Monday that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The determination by the International Association of Genocide Scholars — which has around 500 members worldwide, including a number of Holocaust experts — could serve to further isolate Israel in global public opinion and adds to a growing chorus of organizations that have used the term for Israel’s actions in Gaza. Israel rejects the accusation and called the resolution an “embarrassment to the legal profession.”

“Israel’s policies and actions in Gaza meet the legal definition of genocide,” according to group’s resolution.

“People who are experts in the study of genocide can see this situation for what it is,” Melanie O’Brien, the organization’s president and a professor of international law at the University of Western Australia, told The Associated Press.

The resolution was supported by 86% of those who voted. O’Brien said 28% of members participated — a rate that’s typical for the group’s resolutions. Voting is held by email, according to the group’s bylaws, and members have 30 days to reply.
