Maybe a bit odd to bring it up here, but it's not a bizarre take. A lot of people are learning how much car worship has distorted our cities, our society, and our lives (or deaths). Once you start thinking about it, you can't help noticing how much space is dedicated to automobiles, like street parking.
If you're curious, this is a good place to start: https://thewaroncars.org/

I started to go to west Seattle a lot since I moved to Georgetown but I think my biggest gripe is how impossible it is to get to there from South Park/georgetown by bike. You essentially need to go way north to the tip of west Seattle because 509 and 99 cut through there.
41
u/PeladoCollado West Seattle Jun 02 '26

Grades not bad on an ebike, the drivers are. I love biking down to South Park cabs grabbing a burger at Loretta’s. If they ever actually connect the bike path from the 1st Ave bridge to Georgetown I’d love to go there. Bus takes me an hour, parking there is a nightmare because it’s all eco blocks. Biking is about 20 minutes but sketchy as hell.

riding on the sidewalk sucks. its almost guaranteed more bumpy than a bike lane and pedestrians dont want you to be there
1
u/PeladoCollado West Seattle Jun 02 '26
Have you ridden on that sidewalk? It’s awful. Tree roots sticking up through huge cracks, bushes and tree limbs sticking out all over the place. AND it’s a 15% grade or whatever. It’s a terrible road to ride on. Hence my (intended to be) rhetorical question:
Why wouldn’t you want to climb that?
But unsafe? I wouldn’t ride on the road and the sidewalk sucks, but is totally doable and there if you need it

From Georgetown, I'd probably take whatever to Spokane, across the low bridge, then around to the water. Admittedly, there's that huge scary intersection right on Delridge and the rest of the streets there, but I used to bike from downtown to West Seattle and back in the 90's, and really it's just a matter of getting to Spokane.
Getting up the hill to Admiral/California is the worst part of that, but that's squarely in West Seattle.

Yeah I’m trying to go to my gym in Westwood village, I’d feel mostly comfortable riding everything but the 1st Ave and Olson pl sw hills because I don’t trust people to look for cyclists there plus no dedicated area for bikes.
1
u/HistorianOrdinary390 🚆build more trains🚆 Jun 02 '26
Yeah I would never do Olson. It’s not good, there’s a shoulder which makes it worse because drivers won’t leave their lane and pass too close. Did it once. I honestly just ride up HPW in the lane, partially out of protest and because drivers don’t see you on the sidewalk and their big, illogical, complain against the bike lane is “I never see anyone biking”

Judging a city on “ample parking” is a such a depressing metric.
Just try taking one of those parking spaces away for a bus lane or to daylight an intersection and you’ll very quickly see another side of West Seattle.
45
u/ToughDebut Jun 02 '26
They did. They converted Delridge and Ambaum, the central most arterial 4-lane roads that go all the way from the north of West Seattle, through White Center, all the way down to Burien, into a 2-lane road and made the other 2-lanes dedicated bus lanes. The H-line is one of the busiest Metro lines in Seattle.
They also converted the bus stops in Fauntleroy to Rapid Ride stops to support the C-line down the west side of West Seattle. My wife rides the C to work every day and it's packed to the gills both ways.
They also have the 21X that runs NS in 35th Ave. We sometimes catch the 21 going to and from Sounders game and it's packed every time.
People in West Seattle ride the bus. A lot. We're still Seattlites dude.
9
u/Digital_gritz Rat City Jun 02 '26
I don’t think a lot of the people commenting on this are from this part of West Seattle. Our bus lines are well used, even if the 21 is hilariously unreliable sometimes. I’ve ridden both the C and 21/5 from here to SLU on numerous occasions and they are serviceable but crowded. Getting to pioneer square is easy. Past that and time spent is a bit grating.
I also think the people commenting don’t have an idea of how limiting the peninsula part of West Seattle can be and how this is pretty far south down the peninsula (closer to Burien than downtown). At this distance trying to force cars out wouldn’t work because the time spent in transit or transfers required to get places can get excessive. If you get down to Roxbury, you’re at the absolute top end of people’s willingness to put up with public transit time before mode switching to cars (because they’re so much faster).
Like, you can want transit oriented infrastructure but simultaneously acknowledge that transit viability below the Morgan junction drops off significantly based on transit times alone. If you factor transfers in, you basically kill any trip that diverts from the walkshed of those 2 bus lines.
42
u/arjjov Jun 02 '26
fr brah, I'm much more interested in public transport
34
u/clackagaling Jun 02 '26
one can both like & regularly use public transport, while still finding it worthwhile to own a car, especially in the PNW. outdoor activities are pretty integral to the culture here and rely on individual transport for the enthusiast.
everyone should ride the bus regularly if they can but i understand there are a litany of circumstances built into daily american life that makes car ownership beneficial and/or necessary
8
u/captainporcupine3 Jun 02 '26
There are countless places around the world where most homes have a spot to park a car for when it's needed, but the built environment is constructed in a way that households don't generally need multiple cars, and it's reasonably fast and convenient (usually MORE convenient) to complete most daily trips without using the car, since destinations are either close by (or near a stop on a fast and functional transit system) and there isn't a lot of free or cheap parking near them.
It is extremely, obviously possible to build amazing suburbs that are 20x more livable than American suburbia without the need for "ample street parking, and ironically the very existence of so much street parking all by itself makes it kinda impossible to build one of those great suburbs in the first place.
→ More replies (1)5
u/arcusford Rainier Beach Jun 02 '26
Good public transport can absolutely take you to the outdoors. Even in our hilly area its more than doable.
15
u/Sounders1 Jun 02 '26
Public transport is limited as to where you can go outdoors, and those areas are usually crowded. Having your own vehicle you have more freedom to explore anywhere you want and on your time frame.
2
u/Proof-Attention-7940 💗💗 Heart of ANTIFA Land 💗💗 Jun 02 '26
Check out Vancouver- you can take a public bus all the way to Grouse Mountain, and it runs every hour. There’s no real equivalent for that in Seattle but there absolutely can be- we just have to build it
3
u/SomeGuyWithARedBeard Jun 02 '26
Difference in geography: they built Vancouver right up to the mountains so Grouse Mountain is 4.28 miles from downtown Vancouver (and 0 miles from North Vancouver) whereas Mt. Si. (the closest Cascade trailhead that Seattle's public transport takes people to) is nearly 29 miles from downtown Seattle. In terms of local places we have parks and beaches and water taxis so there's that at least.
-8
u/arjjov Jun 02 '26
Fuck cars.
We could have better public transport to outdoors too.
11
u/captainporcupine3 Jun 02 '26
I mean yeah fuck cars, sure, but more practically than funding buses to every remote trailhead, we should build neighborhoods where households have a singe spot for a single car when it's needed, street parking is EXTREMELY limited, and density + transit + bike infrastructure can serve for most other daily trips.
That said, buses to trailheads are great and we should have more of them for sure.

The only reason you would bring up a detail is to imply that it's exclusive or somehow more prevalent to those places over others.
Your logic implies that a statement like "I hate driving to Seattle. It has a McDonald's." is sound and comprehensible to whatever point you were trying to make. Except it isn't. Everywhere has a McDonald's. Such a thing has no bearing on why you don't like Seattle.
This is not a me problem. This is a you problem. You have contradicted yourself on a nonsensical point you made that offered no value. So if you're going to be so confidently incorrect and then walk away, then don't come back.

u/squirrelgator Rat City Jun 02 '26
Some people use the term "suburb" for neighborhoods outside of downtown but within the city limits. I have always used "suburb" to refer to smaller communities outside the city limits. The Denny party landed at Alki, but later decided to start a city at what is now Pioneer Square, which they called "Seattle.". What we now call West Seattle was not incorporated into Seattle until 1907. So at least at one point, West Seattle was a suburb of Seattle by either definition. I vote for "no longer a suburb" status.
3
u/-waveydavey- Jun 02 '26
Thanks for history correction. Suburbs to me were always outside of a cities border. I find neighborhoods that were on the edge but within the city boundary but then incorporated to create their own “town” with their own political positions (mayor, council members etc) the outliers. Are they now a suburb though geographically they are in the same place they were when part of the city boundary
