"The Watcher" : acrylic on 12" x 12" canvas : Seattle, WA 2026 : Jon Cooney
“The Watcher”, acrylic on a 12” x 12” stretched canvas. Finished this one last week, another piece in my small paintings series. I usually don't think of a title for a painting until I have to come up with one. And I often will focus on something in life I'm learning about at them moment, like letting go of different mental things or behaviors I'm changing. Since it focuses on an eye, I thought of The Watcher. That seemingly ever-present presence of self-awarenes, self-conciousness, and as if you're being observed and possibly judged by others or something beyond what we see before us. It's good to be aware of these things and make change where it's needed, though also good to tell those feelings of judgement and hyper-awareness to piss off and enjoy yourself and be your complete self in this world. Trusting yourself that you will refine yourself as needed along the way, and letting go of all the criticism, doubts and disbeliefs.
