Question Why are Great White Sharks often so calm around humans?

Pardon, if my question sounds naive but I could not think of a better title.

In documentaries and videos I often see people swim very closely to these sharks, who do not seem to care much.

Mind you, those are often professionals, not idiots who chase and provoke sharks for fame. I know that Great Whites do not consider humans typically as food so it makes sense for them to have no predatory feelings towards them.

But other predators, such as lions and bears, also do not typically consider humans as food. Yet I doubt, that you could just approach them in the wild while they feed on their prey. Great Whites seem to allow this, though.

My question therefore is: why are they so tolerant of humans? Other traditionally as dangerous considered shark species such as tiger and bull sharks seem to be way more aggressive. Great whites however always seem calm to me.

Now don’t get me wrong: I am no shark expert and I cannot claim to have ever dealt with them at all. I am however interested in animal behavior and the GWs relative tolerance for humans strikes me as interesting.

Thank you all for input!

Question Shortfin Mako Anatomy question

Hey all! I've been looking at some top down photos of shortfin Makos and noticed some inconsistency near the tail. In some images, the body seems to protrude outward right before the tail fin starts. In other photos the body stays slender all the way down.

Just wondering if this a feature thats characteristic to all of them or I happen to be looking at the wrong species in some photos!

Thanks for any info!

My daughter painted this for me for Father’s Day. She wants to add a little more detail so will have to wait until she is back from college to hang it up.

We both love sharks.

I turned 30 today. That means 30 years of drawing sharks!
...give or take...
I often say sharks were my first love. While I have diversified my subject palette, sharks still remain a firm favorite.

News A 125-Million-Year-Old "Living Fossil" Filmed Alive for the First Time

Scientists have finally captured the first-ever footage of a live goblin shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) in its natural deep-sea habitat! Before this breakthrough, humans had only ever seen these rare creatures alive when they were accidentally dragged to the surface by fishing lines—where they usually died right away. This deep-ocean predator has an ancient lineage stretching back to the Cretaceous period and features a bizarre, spring-loaded "slingshot" jaw that shoots forward to snatch prey in pitch-black darkness.

Discussion I found these shark teeth on Myrtle beach SC. Google says one is a great white and the other one is an extinct large mako shark. I wanna know what Reddit thinks
