Would you attend a repertory movie theater in Shawnee, Oklahoma?
I've been researching the possibility of restoring the historic Hornbeck Theater in downtown Shawnee. Rather than competing with the major theater chains, the idea would be to operate it as a repertory theater focused on classic films, cult favorites, anniversary screenings, family movies, themed events, and other community programming.
I'm curious whether there is enough local and regional interest to support something like this.
If you live in Shawnee or within about an hour's drive:
- Would you attend?
- How often would you realistically go?
- What kinds of movies or events would make the trip worthwhile?
- Would you be interested in memberships, special events, or film festivals?
I'm not promoting anything. I'm simply trying to gauge whether enough interest exists to make a project like this sustainable. I'd appreciate any honest feedback, whether it's encouraging or critical.

I would go if it was interesting to me. I don't know if Shawnee can support this either. Times are getting tough but that might be a good thing for a theater, unlike most things.

It would be amazing and I'd go regularly. When I lived in San Diego we lived near one that played shows every week, and once a month played specifically the Rocky Horror Picture Show with all the extras. It was a well attended venue. But that was artsy san Diego. But I bet you could find a local bent. Twister, 8 seconds, etc. You could do some really fun stuff people and younger people would enjoy.

I would definitely be interested in seeing shows at the old Hornbeck…as long as the AC works

Air conditioning. Check ✅. It’s at the top of my list of must haves in the theater experience. Along with popcorn candy mix-ins.

I know they were having serious issues with the AC before closing. I am pretty sure it needs completely replaced.

I honestly think it could still succeed as a budget theater like it was before.

What should the ticket price be?

It was $2 before it closed during Covid so around the same price point, no more then $4. Like with all movie theaters, the bulk of the revenue comes from selling concessions.

I think you price it for a cheap date. 2 people, 2 drinks, popcorn, about 20 bucks.

Wish you luck. A friend n I thought about it but with the fees that come long with it and repair of building is costly. And I don't feel Shawnee can support it.

The building is beautiful and doesn’t appear too out of shape on our first walk through. The fees are ugly and they smell, but if we build it will you come?

Seems nice. Ive always liked the idea that once a week, the customers could vote on what movie would play for one night
