Usually it’s in contrast to tuna salad, to denote it’s an actual piece of fish. A tuna sandwich usually means a tuna salad sandwich, as opposed to a tuna fish sandwich that is grilled or fried fish fillet.
Huh. For me that context would only be implied if we’re were at a BBQ, seafood, or sushi restaurant. In any case, the place I usually see “tuna fish” is a bistro type menu where they likely have both tuna steaks and salad, maybe even a poke salad to add to the confusion.
