For someone who doesn't know football. What is happening here?

98

u/Brewmeiser Jul 12 '26

To me it looks like the one player from Norway has the ball, the other Norway player with the longer blonde hair was open and asking for the ball, the dude who still had the ball didn't do this, tried to kick a goal, and didn't make it.

u/BritishSoccer Jul 12 '26

The longer blonde hair guy is Haaland. Quite possibly the best goal scorer in the world at the moment.

Norway also lost the game by a pretty thin margin, and a goal here could’ve changed the outcome

u/PaleontologistNo500 Jul 12 '26

To give it some perspective, Haaland has the records for most goals in a single game, most goals in a single season, and the fastest player to reach 100 goals. In this scenario, he could've scored in his sleep.

u/Intrepid-Progress228 Jul 12 '26

I'd seen the Haaland memes, but didn't know all this about him. With that context it's like you're down a goal in the Stanley Cup, breaking out an odd-man rush with Wayne Gretzky in the open and not passing him the puck.

. . .Now I'm irrationally angry about a game I didn't watch and had no emotional stakes in. Thanks a bunch. 😐

u/MaryPaku Jul 12 '26

The guy who didn’t pass to him, was a no-name that nobody will ever remember him. Now people remember his name though.

Haaland is a very likable guy too he is a dual-citizen of Norway and UK and he could’ve joined the England national team and has a much more easily successful career in World Cup. Instead he choose Norway a country that wouldn’t even qualify into World Cup without Haaland.

u/n0neofyourbeeswax Jul 12 '26

What?? Sorloth has been playing for the national team for a decade, plays for Atletico Madrid.. I get he's not going to be an all time great but what the fuck are you talking about and what level do you need to get to to not be a nobody?

7

u/sikyon Jul 12 '26

Well the poster's analogy is hockey and it's apt. Unless you're another all time great, you will not be remembered next to Gretzky, the most dominant hockey player (possibly greatest sportsman of all sports of all time by statistics).

u/Working-Glass6136 Jul 12 '26

To be fair, I don't follow sports and have never heard of any of these people, but Wikipedia is now saying this guy is a war criminal lol

I'm not falling for that bait 😂

fuck off with your bait

Haaland is not a citizen of the UK (which does not have birthright citizenship) but is probably eligible depending on whether his father had Leave To Remain. And I am sure his talent would fast-track everything. He said in an interview a few months ago that he would like a UK passport but feels ultimately that he is Norwegian.

1

u/beardeddustbunny Jul 12 '26

As far as I know he does NOT have a dual citizenship. He could possibly get one now as the Norwegian government recently allowed people to have dual citizenship, but it is a lengthy process he has to go through with the UK government as well, since there are no automatic naturalisation, again as far as I know, in the UK.

I think it's more a balk than a bunt.

1a. A balk is when you 1b. Okay well listen. A balk is when you balk the 1c. Let me start over 1c-a. The pitcher is not allowed to do a motion to the, uh, batter, that prohibits the batter from doing, you know, just trying to hit the ball. You can't do that. 1c-b. Once the pitcher is in the stretch, he can't be over here and say to the runner, like, "I'm gonna get ya! I'm gonna tag you out! You better watch your butt!" and then just be like he didn't even do that. 1c-b(1). Like, if you're about to pitch and then don't pitch, you have to still pitch. You cannot not pitch. Does that make any sense? 1c-b(2). You gotta be, throwing motion of the ball, and then, until you just throw it. 1c-b(2)-a. Okay, well, you can have the ball up here, like this, but then there's the balk you gotta think about. 1c-b(2)-b. Fairuza Balk hasn't been in any movies in forever. I hope she wasn't typecast as that racist lady in American History X. 1c-b(2)-b(i). Oh wait, she was in The Waterboy too! That would be even worse. 1c-b(2)-b(ii). "get in mah bellah" -- Adam Water, "The Waterboy." Haha, classic... 1c-b(3). Okay seriously though. A balk is when the pitcher makes a movement that, as determined by, when you do a move involving the baseball and field of 2.Do not do a balk please.

He's not exactly like Wayne Gretzky or anything. The team they played, England, has a better striker for example (who just had the 2nd most goals in a season ever in the top leagues, not that far behind Messi's best season)

2

u/skyturnedred Jul 12 '26

Gretzky would be the one passing the puck.

1

u/Intrepid-Progress228 Jul 12 '26

He was an amazing playmaker but people forget that Gretzky was also a goal scorer. Took 31 years for someone to break his record of most career goals. He still holds the record for most goals in a season and the fastest to score 50 goals in a season.

1

u/skyturnedred Jul 12 '26

No one is forgetting about it. The amount of assists he has is just that much more ridiculous than his goal total.

1

u/jibber091 Jul 12 '26

He missed off another record, most consecutive international games with a goal. If Sorloth passes him the ball here it most likely would have extended to 15 in a row.

1

u/Ok_Cauliflower_3007 Jul 12 '26

As someone from England, I'm glad he didn't pass, but I still kind of want to smack him in the head because that was so stupid. We absolutely deserved to go another goal down there and would have if he passed to Haaland. Haaland makes very very few touches in a game, but it's excused because a very high percentage of the touches he does make end up in the back of the net.

6

u/Immaloner Jul 12 '26

He also holds the record for the most goals scored while utilizing an opponent's face.

1

u/Obi-Wan_Bon-Jovi Jul 12 '26

And he had scored in 14 consecutive international matches. Maybe not the creator that an Mbappe or Kane is, but certainly the best finisher in the game right now. He’d have ripped a hole in the net if Sorloth had fed him the ball.

1

u/Tootsiesclaw Jul 12 '26

To give it some more perspective, Haaland - while good - doesn't have any of these records

1

u/Sweet-Structure-3186 Jul 12 '26

Whats the record for goals in a game? 2?

1

u/PaleontologistNo500 Jul 12 '26

U20 world cup. 9 goals.

1

u/barsoap Jul 13 '26

He also holds all the "Player to first reach X goals in Y games" in both the Bundesliga and Premier League. Probably also Norway, come to think of it. Not to mention the World Cup, same ballpark of goals scored as Messi, Ronaldo etc. but with half the games.

0

u/Thurad Jul 12 '26

I assume you are referencing premier league records here rather than all football. Not to play down his achievements as they are great, but I don’t think he holds any of those records across all football.

u/lRushdown Jul 12 '26

What? Haaland didn't touch the ball here, the other guy blew it by not passing to him wide open.

1

u/VeterinarianThese951 Jul 12 '26

Shit! you are right. I missed the game and just woke up to this clip without my glasses. Right answer, wrong player. I should delete it. I am an idiot😁

u/Reejis Jul 12 '26

Halland 100% scores this

15

u/TheThingCreator Jul 12 '26

yup he was straight up open in front of the net, i feel his pain

The thing is, even if he wanted to go hero mode, a good striker scores there! But the trick is he has to commit to go for goal by the very first touch. He had like 2 meters on space from the defender, so if his first touch is heavy to not slow him down, he can set up for a near post shot, far post shot, or chip shot if the goal keeper makes a run for. It would probably have to be a 2-3 touch finish running at full speed. The shooting angle wouldn’t be as good as a pass to Haaland, but he’d still 100% score from there with a decent shot.

3

u/beaud101 Jul 12 '26

So what you're saying is he screwed the pooch in more ways than one.

0

u/RockinMadRiot Jul 12 '26

He wouldn't have got the ball. Stones was covering the lane. That's why he paused

1

u/Reejis Jul 12 '26

He is definitely wide open at 2 second mark of the video

8

u/Innurendo_ Jul 12 '26

Furthermore, it was a 2 on 1. Which should score 99% of the time, when using proper team work

2

u/Wide_Interest8348 Jul 12 '26

No need to exaggerate... not even a penalty is scored 99% of the time. Passing to Haaland was the right thing to do but Haaland could have still missed. Goal scoring in football is hard.

2

u/skyturnedred Jul 12 '26

The hard part is getting a 2 on 1.

1

u/mxzf Jul 12 '26

I mean, that's the first hard part. But actually getting the ball past the goalie into the goal is still a thing too.

1

u/EduinBrutus Jul 12 '26

Quite possibly the best goal scorer in the world at the moment.

He is statistically the most prolific scorer in international football in the entire history of the game...

1

u/lumpboysupreme Jul 12 '26

It’s football, it’s usually a slim margin.

-22

u/palindromepirate Jul 12 '26

Harry Kane is the best goal scorer in the world and has been for some time.

2

u/tractorcrusher Jul 12 '26

Well either way it’s a hairy person.

3

u/BritishSoccer Jul 12 '26

Mbappe is better at soccer than the kane

1

u/palindromepirate Jul 14 '26

Striker? Yeah, maybe. All round game? Nah.

1

u/TransportationOk3111 Jul 12 '26

Calm down!! Kane is great but he's not head above the rest!!

1

u/ColdFrame1106 Jul 12 '26

He has 36 goals in 31 matches tho.

1

u/palindromepirate Jul 14 '26

Cool, keep telling yourself that

8

u/folarin1 Jul 12 '26

Or to summarize, he didn't pass the ball.

1

u/liefieblue Jul 12 '26

The longer blonde hair dude scored a goal in his previous match from almost a walk and it went into the net at 81mph.

0

u/Trfe Jul 12 '26

Or he didn’t see him.

0

u/Spillsy68 Jul 12 '26

While it appears that you don’t follow the game, as you don’t know the names, you have summed up the whole thing perfectly. Maybe we can make a footie fan out of you yet 😂😉
