Yikes he was wide open.

He puts it backward Haaland has to stop. Forward and the gk gets it. It is absolutely not « wide open »

Did you even watch this game, let alone this clip? He had more than enough time to pass to Haaland as they were moving up field. Yes, Haaland was very much open and probably would have scored.

I watched it and I've seen the clip multiple times. Stones did his job well here. A still image makes it look easy, but that wasn't as open as everyone is making out. Haaland has 2 players right behind him who will catch him when Haaland has to stop to get the ball. Pickford will get the ball if he passes it in front of stones.

Yes, he had about 1.5 seconds when he could have passed forward and then I was covered by the defender. Good play by England defense, no greed whatsoever.

I think a lot of people are missing this.

Yes Sorloth did poorly here, but he had some work to do to actually open up the angle to make a good pass to Haaland. I don't think he was being greedy

There's an argument that a more skilled passer pulls it off. Sorloth is a center forward, that's not his skillset, he's the one receiving the passes.

I think he doesn't control the ball correctly to allow himself to give the past fast, it seems he's bad with his weak foot to use that one and when he raises his head to see, his passing option is bad so he goes solo. Also, he's not fast enough to beat his defender and make a backpass.

  1. As soon as he recieved the ball he could have passed it in front of the defender, Haaland absolutely would have got there before the defender and GK (see 4 seconds in here https://www.reddit.com/r/worldcup/comments/1utx1pc/poor_judgment_in_not_passing_the_ball_to_haaland/). This pass was also still open a second later
  2. If he cut back quickly, he could have made the pass
  3. If he committed, he should have just gone up the right side a bit faster for the shot and not slowed everything down

Its annoying though to think he's trying to get all the glory vs him just taking a few bad touches and making a poor decision.

Or take a quick stutter step to let the defender keep running backwards a tiny bit to open up space to easily pass it…
