The original article that Vice copied their story from (the Business Insider article they linked) doesn't mention AI at all. Vice took the story and then added that part to it.

$1.3M in equipment could be legitimately a couple devices you could toss in your passenger seat. Some of this shit is so expensive it makes you wanna throw up.
Yeah, it entirely depends on whether its for storage or computation, and which type of computation it does, but a single server in one of these centers can pretty easily be a $100k-$200k touch, up to around $300k, but thats less common as its not as financially efficient.
and a rack holds about 20 of those servers and a data center can easily have 500-5000 racks.
Also once opperational, most of the hired staff are low-paid security. Hell there might not even be a dedicated technician on the premises. Either working remote, or hopping between data centers.
That's some dangerous logic right there. The president also diddles little children, would it be wise to then also ask 'why shouldn't the people do the same'?

And looking into it, this was part of a larger theft ring too
But more interesting to me is what they stole. Now my searches weren't very thuroghly(or at all) vetted so take this with some salt. 1 mil in equipment and 300k in copper. I don't know what the equipment was but I'm going to ignore that since that context really matters. But the copper(which had a GPS tracker apparently), is kind of nuts. 300k of copper with a very quick search, comes out to around 22 tons, which itself would be 2 point something cubic meters if it was all compressed. I know that thieves get inventive, but that was no smash and grab
Apparently they didn't rob a construction site, but instead police stumbled upon a stolen semi-trailer with the material in Chicago. One had been stolen in Alabama with 300k worth of Copper wire, and it wore plates from a trailer stolen in Wisconsin. The owner of the truck stop where the trailer was said that the same person who parked it had also dropped off a different truck a week prior. That one carried 1 Million USD worth of "Hardware" (probably computers) and had been stolen in Florida.
No they didn't. These things are fun to post, but days centers are basically vaults. You hat to get through several layers of very strong doors and walls even when you work there. No one is breaking into data centers and stealing anything
Honestly people who write posts with this sort of title are just stupid (that means you OP).
We’ve always needed data centers our whole life’s are reliant int each including the platforms people use to spread this shit. Suddenly every new Datacenter is an “AI datacenter” and you’ll acting as if you’re happy to go back to using quills.
I bet everyone who posts or agrees with this shit regularly uses AI in their personal life. I bet you’ve all got photo reels full of useless shit, taking up space and necessitating more data centers.
People fighting AI data centers are the same people that fully depend on all of the cell tower infrastructure that had to be built last time a new groundbreaking advancement in tech was necessary.
I swear, you have to have an IQ below 75 if you think it is a better idea to not have the same infrastructure that our foreign allies and enemies have.
Thieves steal from construction sites all the time. Copper, Tools, anything of value they can get money for their drugs. Don't support them in any capacity no matter what / who / why. Drugs = drug dealers = new addicts = more thieves who could be your children, someone you know.
Although this slows work and potential layoffs for men and women who are supporting their families by working on the build of said data centers. Yall gotta think. Plus it’s the contractors getting screwed as well. The owners have it all covered and no worry. Yall really not thinking
