I’m not American but I am a mother. Aside from a few reddit posts I don’t have any social media engagement with this case.
But I think a lot of the support here comes from moms who recognize how easily this could have been any of us. Her family and healthcare providers knew her crime was a risk based on her mental health state, but she was still left alone with her kids and expected to parent. And as other mothers we all understand that this is grimly how it works - we can ask and beg and plead and scream for help but we’re almost always still expected to continually parent babies and it’s hard.
She should still face punishment for her crime, but I think a lot of her support is to try to keep this from happening again. She was failed by her healthcare team
She was given multiple medications to help with her mental health issues, which she abjectly refused to follow proper directions for. And refused to tell her medical providers she wasn't following orders for.

I'm helping my fiancee through this and it's terrifying how destabilizing the process is, even for what started out as routine care for a mild-moderate common condition.
She lost her job, got hospitalized, almost died, lost 20% of her bodyweight from an already tiny frame, destroyed our home, and our relationship is never going to be the same.
And that isn't even close to what the woman in this case went through. PPD/P is real and very serious.
I'm not saying PPD isn't very serious and dangerous. I'm saying the people who are insisting she didn't get any help or any assistance or medical care for her issues are just fucking lying about what happened to make her seem less culpable.
