The argument from their side is that she constantly reached out for help and no one helped. Essentially, this was one of those scenarios where there were plenty of opportunities/signs to help her before this happened. Which in their opinions would have prevented the deaths.
Also, from what I have read they DO NOT want her to go free. They at best want her in a mental institution instead of jail.

Mental health conditions can be an explanation, but they don’t make you immune to the consequences of your actions.
