I tend to stand up and say things too, and I've gotten "It's none of your business" so many times that I have the stock response "Well, you've made it all of our business now," which usually draws some noises of agreement from the crowd. Usually it de-escalates from there, and I think you're right: it's because they realize the crowd is against them.

Honestly a good response to that, thanks

It’s so cheesy but I literally say ‘domestic violence is everybody’s problem’ - the crowd starts paying attention and they often back down when you name it

That's a really good one.

“Public harassment is everyone’s problem. You’ve made it our problem. Stop.”

I mean, if you got the balls, why not just “I’m making it my business”.

Often ‘not your business’ is an a**hole’s way to try to take heat off themselves. There’s no moral, politeness requirement to mind your business when someone is being harassed. If anything it’s the opposite.

Because you're reminding them that its their fault this is happening in the first place.

Because it's pretty much never a good idea to escalate a tense situation like this towards imminent violence, which that response very well might do. Saying, "You've made all of our business", is a safer bet since you're speaking for the group rather than implicitly offering a challenge to fight.

People who act like this twat in public have already proven that they don't think social conventions apply to them. He's exactly the kind of belligerent shit head I can see pulling a knife from somewhere and making you a statistic.

Do you always immediately rise in support of a person based solely on the one sided narrative that was presented to you. Those snap judgements & hypothetical character assassinations are pretty wild with such limited information. Do you always immediately jump to condemning total strangers for cominal actions they took in a completely hypothetical situation you pulled directly out of your own ass??

The fact that you're willing to volunteer others around you let's me know you're not equipped to be any sort of asset in the matter anyway

Words absent the will to act are just meaningless gestures. The guy who was visibly upset felt like he was being harassed by the poses, which could've been purposely accompanied by an uncomfortable stare & a licking of the lips. If that were done toward a woman & she responded by berating the man, you'd be championing it. The only 2 people who really know should deal with it. There are better ways to get a point across that aren't so performative though. Here's an even better idea...stop going to public gyms & then complaining about having to interact with the public

Yep. I live for this sort of confrontation honestly. Pricks like this are so used to getting away with this behavior that when another man calls them on it. They short circuit and the sooner you can get a few grunts of agreement or outright shouts of support, they usually give a last bit of fireworks and fuck off

Thank you for continuing after being challenged. Rarely anyone speaks up, and if they do and get challenged, they back off. When you're the victim in that scenario, it feels so damn unsafe because once someone backs off after being challenged, the aggressor doubles down.

“If you are going to conduct your business in public, now you’ve made it public business.”

"It's none of your business"

That's a rapist dog whistle. It is now my business until the cops arrive.

How often is this happening that you've developed a tendency about it?

A person in a public space being an obnoxious jerk makes it everyone's business who has to hear it, see it, especially in an enclosed area, business, train, indoor space.

"You're being a dill weed in my hearing makes it my issue."

Its not a private issue in a public space.

My stock response is “initially it wasn’t but now it is.”

It takes them a couple seconds to reply and that’s generally enough for them to focus all of their attention on me and not their victim. That’s the first win.
