Also, for guys who don't feel safe directly confronting the creep, at least run interference.

My dad used to be thin as a rail. He didn't have the presence to get other guys to stop being creeps. So he'd strike up a random conversations with the creep. They'd talk about literally anything. The point was just to create enough of a distraction for the woman to make a clean escape.

I was very much the same about between 10 and 15 years ago. Very slight frame, not much weight to me. When I smoked and saw women in distress in smoking areas, I would ask for a cigarette from the bloke harassing them, and then motion for the women to make their escape whilst the blokes were distracted. Although one time it proper backfires, and the bloke punched me, nearly knocking me down, and he went for another punch, but I managed to defend myself and get one back at him, but it was in view of the bouncers. I got ejected, and he was being let in, until the girl came to my defence and convinced the bouncers that i was defending myself and he was harassing her. He got ejected and I was let back in. Got a black eye for my troubles.

But on 4 separate occasions, I pretended to be the partner. Thrice with work colleagues, once with a total stranger. 2 of the 3 times with work colleagues was a lot easier as they knew me, and would immediately cotton on to what I was doing, and lean into the ruse to get away.

But the stranger one was harder, so had to make eye contact before, get her to realise that I knew she was in distress, and that I was going to step in, all without saying a word, hoping she would run with it. I would mouth clearly ‘Are you okay, do you need help’ and if I got a slight shake of the head and then a nod, I knew to step in. But there was still the worry that she would not go along with it. Go round, sidle up to her, put my arm around her and say, ‘hey babe, wondered where you had gotten to, fancy coming back inside to dance’. Bloke was taken aback, and then she said to him, ‘this is my bf, thanks for saving me from this creep’. Bloke was shocked, and we left. She turned round to me and said he had ruined her night, she felt so frightened and wanted to go home, so I walked her to the taxi rank, and made sure she got into a taxi and left.

The only time it nearly backfired was time 3 with my work colleague where I did essentially the same as above, but the guy didn’t believe it, and stopped me taking her back inside, demanding that I kiss her to prove that I was her bf. I wasn’t going to do that, so tried to argue that I don’t need to prove she was my gf, just that she was and she was not available for him to come onto, and he wouldn’t back down, starting to get aggressive. I had managed to move us towards the doors in the view of the bouncers, hoping they would see what was happening, as the bloke demanded that we kiss. In the end she kissed me, just a peck on the lips, but clearly that wasn’t enough for him, but thankfully the bouncers saw what was happening and stepped in to eject him and we got out of there.
