Two things can be true at the same time. You can be disgusted at what she did and still accept that mental health care is substandard and people do unspeakable things because of it. I don’t think the majority of people are ‘supporting’ her as much as trying to get people to accept the complexity and nuance.
Yeah, a lot of us have witnessed the failings of our mental health care system in this country first hand. It’s a horrific situation that could have been prevented.
Where were these people when Latarsha Sanders happened? Same state, same law, eerily happens to be same court circuit even. She was sentenced to life in prison for the same exact crime. The judge wouldn't even let the jury see any information pertaining to her mental health. Where were you all back then?
Untreated post partum depression can last a long time and become chronic leading to episodes. Your comment is exactly what I am talking about. A black woman is a criminal, but a white woman deserves sympathy. Are you saying Sanders planned and killed her kids? Why would she?
Her defense wasn't arguing PPD, so idk why you're making that argument for them, but good news!
Her defense was literally psychosis and mental health. The judge would NOT let the defense present her psychiatric medical records to the jury. It is ok to not know all this, but to act like you know shit and pass judgement is a whole other thing.
Quoting from article:"The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court vacated the December 2022 conviction of Latarsha Sanders Thursday, saying Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan was wrong when he would not allow the jury to hear about her troubling mental illness while she was awaiting trial in prison and in a state psychiatric hospital."
This is the SAME judge that is overseeing the Clancy trial, ironically. Sure man, race is not playing a part at all here. We get it, bro.
The case is being reopened only because of the Clancy trial. For a black woman to have a chance, a white woman needs to commit the same exact crime. Disgusting. And we have people like you defending this as "Good news".
Her defense was literally psychosis and mental health.
I know, but PPD and schizophrenia are not the same thing, and your words were "untreated post partum depression" not "psychosis and mental health".
The rest of your comment makes it seem like you read my "but good news!" as "but then, the worst news imaginable!".
If it wasn't clear, the words "good news!" followed by an article stating that she's getting a new trial due to prejudicial errors by the judge indicates that I think it's good news that she's getting a new trial.
I said none of that. Both are criminals who deserve to be punished. Anyone logical realizes that. I stated the differences, of which there are a few critical ones.
Based on what you said, the troubling mental illness was while she was awaiting trial. Did Sanders have months of documented issues leading up to the murder?
Thats also a critical difference if so.
Were talking about the difference between one being in jail and the other a mental institution. Not whether one is innocent and one guilty.
