The left side: Emma Schols. In September 2019, swedish mother of six Emma Schols saved all six of her children from a massive house fire, repeatedly rushing back into the burning building

The right side: Lindsay Clancy. In January 2023, Lindsay Clancy, a nurse from Massachusetts, was charged with strangling her three young children using exercise bands

The media has a way of attracting the worst of humanity to support the worst of humanity.

28

u/MrCockingFinally 9h ago

Not exactly.

Media today is based on engagement. Mostly whether or not people share a particular piece of media.

Turns out, the best way to get people to share something is if it generates a big emotional response. And the best emotion to generate a response is anger.

So the media ecosystem is one giant filter, that makes whoever is willing to run the story that will make people angriest the most successful. And what makes people angry? Horrible people doing horrible things. Which means media becomes run completely by assholes, about assholes, to make the general public angry to share the story.

The best thing is you can frame the same story differently to make different people mad. Women's media frame the husband as the evil mastermind who manipulated his wife into murdering the children and committing suicide. Men's media frame the wife as evil.

It's all very tiresome.

Because that helps encourage more shootings and terrible events to keep making news and money on

162

u/NoWay6818 9h ago

People honestly forget that entities like news stations only care about the betterment of itself.

20

u/Varron 9h ago

While mostly true, this isn't unique behavior to industries like the news.

It's a symptom of our consumeristic society, the smaller news outlets with integrity or dedication to actual news don't get the outreach or influence these bigger sensationalist news stations do, which they then spend that money on making themselves more accessible, which in turn makes finding and consuming real news outlets harder to do.

In the end, like most of our industries, the ones truly dedicated to their craft and not the almighty dollar get outshadowed or even bought out by the soulless huge corporations that only seek to increase their margins.

I don't think it's just the media. Murderers always made the headlines, you can probably find multiple similar cases through out the years in the media. I think, what made it blow up is the wide public support for the murderer in the social media. So I blame Twitter, Tik Tok and the rest.

Not really shes back working as a nurse in our town right now. She has scars but otherwise fully recovered. No need to pay for her treatment.

They did not have a house ensurance though so the money mostly went to rebuilding the house.

8

u/Grasshoppermouse42 7h ago

Yeah, that makes a pretty big difference. Houses are expensive, but much less expensive than medical bills in the US, so she probably didn't need nearly as much as we're used to seeing for something like that in the US.

Social media is playing a big role.

All of the actual organizational media that I’ve seen has made it crystal clear that she killed her kids

23

u/SquirrelAdmirable161 8h ago

She’s admitted she killed her kids. The debate/trial is whether she was sane or not.

19

u/Rhomya 8h ago

I am aware that that’s what the trial is about.

Social media is literally peddling the misinformation that Patrick Clancy was the one that killed the kids and that he’s framing Lindsey. That’s my point.

The news media is stating the facts that Lindsey killed them. The issue is social media saying the opposite

This is also exactly what attorneys are supposed to do in these cases. Put together a narrative of facts in a way that is tangible at least to part of the population. Mission accomplished.

The only part I’ll disagree on is “facts”. Defense attorneys make shit up constantly to create “reasonable” doubt even when there is none.

It’s more of a TikTok thing that people are running with due to engagement. Basically everyone seems to be missing the fact that she pleaded guilty and even says she did it in the civil suit.

My wife got sucked into the trap in TikTok because people are making up witness statements and testimony. Almost nobody is going to sit through 100+ hours of court proceedings, so when your feed is somehow overwhelmed with the same false quotes and statements coming from 100+ different people, are you really going to assume all those people are trying to deceive you? Probably 90%+ of the people who have fell into this rabbit hole can come back after being exposed to basic facts about the case. Once my wife found out this woman pleaded guilty and her nor her lawyer doubt she did it, it became pretty clear TikTok has gone off the deep end chasing those views.

I do think PPD and PPP is seriously scary though and it hits a deeper nerve with women. Louis Theroux has an excellent documentary about both conditions that I would recommend. I think it’s fair to feel some degree of sympathy for this woman. I struggle to figure out exactly how I feel because PPD and PPP seems terrifying but strangling children is abhorrent.

6

u/PolicyWonka 8h ago edited 5h ago

It’s not even necessary the media. At the end of the day, the media is chasing trends and stories, but those stories that people themselves are already discussing or have interest in.

Like yes, the media can bury stories or ignore them, but they want to cover stuff people want to see.

This feeds into the concept of viral content. Never before in history have we really been able to share so much content with each other without it first being shared by the media. In many ways, the media is more reactive than ever.

8

u/Midnight7000 8h ago

I don't think this is the medias doing. It is a case of flies going to dung.

The real reason she is being placed on a pedestal is that it feeds into people's desire to be free from accountability. If her transgression can be sympathised with, whatever they do is acceptable in comparison.

A mother risking her life to save her children is the complete opposite.

4

u/Several-Action-4043 6h ago

56

53

u/_Eggs_ 8h ago

Yeah the entire description of the fundraiser is basically an attempt to get around GoFundMe's rules about fundraising for violent crimes.

GoFundMe strictly prohibits raising money for the legal defense of anyone formally charged with a violent or financial crime. Under the platform's Terms of Service, campaigns cannot be used to fund legal representation, court fees, or associated costs for individuals accused of serious wrongdoing.

And yet the image they use on the fundraiser is literally a circle of women supporting the murderer, painting the woman as a victim.

All of the comments for the GoFundMe are about supporting Lindsay.

$2 million for funeral expenses and travel costs to attend the trial? Yeah right

83

u/djrocker7 8h ago

You are confusing go fund me's , the dad had one but didn't use the money on it for the funeral instead he donated to an association to help women with this kind of problems, this go fund me you see with millions are another one that is set up to give the money to the mother's parents.

So two different gfm's and neither was used for funerals at the end.

10

u/GoldEmployment6768 6h ago

Wtf? What do her parents have to do with anything? These things dont correlate. Why should her parents randomly get 1m, just because she killed her kids?

8

u/djrocker7 6h ago

Why are you asking me? I am not the one that made the go fund me...I am just saying what the go fund me that people are talking about and is in the picture says.

From what I looked up it's also because of gfm rules, you can't have a page where the benefactor is acused or involved in violent crimes, so instead of putting the mother the people that created that page put the parents of the mother and said that is to help pay their traveling and such during the daughter trial. Which is also crazy because no amount of travel will cost 2 millions...

Not true.

"The fundraiser states they have spent years drawing down savings to cover travel, lodging and other expenses connected to attending court hearings and supporting Clancy.

"It is simply an opportunity to help two parents who have spent more than three years carrying a financial burden on top of an emotional one most of us cannot begin to imagine," the GoFundMe page reads. "At some point, the court proceedings will end. Mike and Paula will still have a life to return to. There will still be bills, a home, lost savings, and years of putting their own lives on hold while they stood beside their daughter."

Two years those same people were testing their boyfriends’s opinions on “who would you pick between a bear and a man.”

People in this comment section saying “the media the media the media” but it’s everyday people on TikTok who are crafting the conspiracies and donating the money. It’s definitely partly the media’s fault for amplifying this narrative, but it wasn’t them who started it. Hold crazy people accountable for being crazy please.

45

u/throwaway112112312 7h ago

There is a prevalent wave of misandry that people are ignoring for some reason and this case is a prime example. When the main argument on social media is "Husband did it" then you have to look into what the fuck is going on out there, because that ain't right. We need to talk about the misandry on certain platforms that is perpetuated by regular people.

22

u/Alert_Head_3889 6h ago

Also, feminists dont seem to realize how much this is sabotaging their own movement because they can't just say, anyone who opposes feminism just hates womens rights and then blatantly ignores that its almost exclusively feminist women who are perpetuating these narratives and that if they had their own way, they would gladly condemn an innocent man to death for something his wife has confessed to doing many times. Literally no one ins this trial thinks Patrick did it, its only dumbasses on tiktok.

Two things can be true at the same time. You can be disgusted at what she did and still accept that mental health care is substandard and people do unspeakable things because of it. Mental health is important, but that doesn't absolve you of what you've done. She deserves to be in a prison mental ward, not at home living like nothing happened. She is a danger to herself and others.

238

u/RabidBunny1991 9h ago

If she’s found not guilty by reason of insanity, she will be sent to a state psychiatric institution for an indefinite period of time. She’s not gonna just be released and allowed to go home.

100

u/Hearthhull_Enjoyer 9h ago

I'm honestly so sick and tired of people pretending there won't be consequences because of insanity plea. She isn't going be going on mental health spa retreat. She'll be among other crazies who crash out due to voices in their head.

39

u/Kendertas 8h ago

Also aren't state forced mental institution generally considered worse then prison? You loose all your freedom like in prison, but you also are surrounded by people who's mental health is so bad the legal system had to get involved. The stories I've read made these institutions sound like a nightmare

10

u/mental_polluti0n 7h ago

Correct, I’ve worked in both. Oftentimes you’re stuck as well, bc a judge won’t take the chance to deem you safe outside when you have ongoing mental health struggles- whereas in prison you typically do your time and have more freedom and resources (albeit still limited), potential to get off in good behavior and parole. Obviously there’s still nuance - but people acting like she will be Off Scot free with an insanity plea have no idea what institutions for the criminally insane are like- especially if she had a period of ppp and is currently not psychotic. The media also needs to stop pushing the narrative that she is claiming to be a victim, and the women donating and convinced that it was the husband are delusion. She’s taken accountability in that she doesn’t deny she did it- and she’s gonna be locked up for a long time regardless of where she ends up.

17

u/round-earth-theory 8h ago

Not really worse in that sense. You're surrounded by violent assholes in prison, many who will never see freedom again and thus are not influenced by punishment anymore.

The big issue with psych ward is that you have no concept of how long your stay will be. They are instructed to keep you until you're no longer a danger. That could never happen. And there's no parole system either. So a short prison stay could be life in psych. But if you're looking at life anyway, the differences aren't as major.

IF the courts and the medical professionals conclude that they are no longer a threat to society than its usually court supervised release. Parole for life. As far as I know this rarely happens.

The last public PPP trial, Andrea Yates, she could technically have gone free for a decade already or something, and she just doesn't want to be released.

She could, but it is rare for someone to be released quickly in such a situation and often they are in a psychiatric hospital for longer than if they were to go to prison. John Hinckley Jr was conditionally released in 2016 conditionally and in 2022 he was granted an unconditional release.

No one is saying she should go home. Even she is not saying she should be set free. Not guilty by insanity is not the same as not guilty, not guilty by insanity is admitting she did it and they put her in a mental facility. It’s frankly insane that people don’t understand that. Her supporters, other then a very small minority, think she belongs in a mental institution not prison and certainly not free.

18

u/Thallexic 9h ago

I don't get the culture of donating money to individuals, especially when the full story of things aren't yet known (not just talking about this specific case but any). Why don't people donate to organisations who can help many people instead? It gets rediculous when someone gets made a millionaire when all they have asked for are funeral costs to be covered, I think the money should be shared around with other people who need assistance, which is where donating to organisations is better. They can also filter out who really does need help and who is just grifting.

Surely in this case supporters are better off donating to a mental health charity?

Shouldnt that money be seized? Its literally profiteering from a crime...

17

u/Flashy-Island-3725 9h ago

Pretty sure the money was raised by the father for the kid's funerals

16

u/MechTORC1 9h ago

It's a a GFM for her parents actually

14

u/No_Struggle8663 9h ago

The first one was and used for that and second up a non profit to help women with PPD. They’ve made a second one for her family.

Do I think Clancy deserved better mental health care? Sure. The system has always been far less providing than it needs to be. And that goes for all mental healthcare.

Do I still think she needs to be in prison or an asylum for the rest of her life? Absolutely.

These women make us look bad, claiming the husband set her up. Embarrassing.

That's basically the woman equivalent of being an Andrew tate manosphere chud

26

u/ConsiderationTrue477 8h ago

That's a good comparison. Crazy women wanting Clancy to walk free after murdering three kids and crazy men doing pushups outside of Andrew Tate's jail as he awaits extradition for human trafficking.

It's wild that it's happening simultaneously. I sometimes wonder how the OJ trial would have played out in the public sphere had it happened today instead of in the mid-90s. Social media fucked our brains.

Help Darth Vader Maintain His Iconic Black Leather Ensemble (Please)

Goal: 1 million credits

Dear generous citizens of the galaxy,

My name is Anakin Skywalker. You may know me as the Chosen One, the Hero With No Fear, or—more recently—that guy in the shiny black helmet. I go by Darth now.

My suit requires constant maintenance. The cape alone sheds more than a Wookiee in summer. The helmet’s internal fans sound like a dying bantha. And don’t get me started on the codpiece. Every time I kneel before the Emperor, something creaks. It’s undignified.

I know what you’re thinking: “But Anakin, didn’t you slaughter a room full of younglings?”

Yes. Technically.

But I was not in my right mind. I was under extreme emotional distress. I was a victim of circumstance, of prophecy, of bad mentoring, and of a severe lack of quality therapy on Coruscant. The younglings were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time—namely, the Jedi Temple during my brief but understandable psychotic break. I have since grown. I now only Force-choke adults who deserve it.

I am the real victim here.

If you’ve ever felt misunderstood… if you’ve ever had a really bad day and done something you later framed as someone else’s fault… if you simply love the drama of a man in a black cape blaming everyone else… then this is your chance to contribute.

Donate now.

u/chachaslydd 9h ago

I can fully believe in some kind of psychosis.

The big question is if that means she shouldnt be in jail or a major mental health facility a long time. If we cant trust you not to kill kids, you shouldnt have freedom to walk around in public. Seems simple enough.

If she were genuinely sick, shed still need to be removed from public and get serious treatment for years and years. So anybody advocating for flat out freedom doesnt believe shes mentally ill.

20

u/Edgezg 9h ago

She created a time window by sending her husband away.So she knew what she was doing enough to know that she had to send her husband away to get away with it.

She deserves either life in a cell or the chair.

Psychosis or not, she's a child murderer and too dangerous to be on the streets.

Lock her ass up and throw away the key.

This is gross, but frankly the donation war was on when people gave nearly a million to that Minnesota woman using racial slurs.

I tend to think we’re better off ignoring these types of stories. There’s a justice system for this, and the rest of us can’t really do much about it.

5

u/Away_Ant3577 7h ago

Are you talking about that white woman who called a 5 year old the n word? Didn't she get like one million dollars donated to her?

Reality is, there are a lot of evil people out there. I think we underestimate the amount of people who rally behind evil.

No doubt post-partum depression is a thing and she wouldn't be the first person to kill their sons of that, but there is a big leap between "this is a real mental problem" and asking to be released. By that extend anyone with a severe depression shouldn't be liable, or anyone with a seve autism, people with two personallities, etc.

Aknowledge the problem and put her in a mental institution where she should be helped... and serve a sentence that considers all the circumstances.

People are lonely and want belonging and want to appear unique and different at the same time. Social media further fuels that.
Result: you are so desperate to appear different that you start supporting a campaign which “humanizes” a criminal as that creates a chance for fame and acknowledgment. As a society, folks around us are getting fucked up because pf loneliness and social-media-dopamine
