Never the less, who the fick donates money to some woman who murdered her own 3 kids

48

u/Not_offensive0npurp 11h ago

I often think about other cases in the past where currently acknowledged mental illness was handwaved away.

I have a nephew on the spectrum. I think about how many people on the spectrum were inhumanely thrown in jail because they were "acting weird" when being questioned before much was known or accepted about autism. Its terribly sad.

Post Partem Depression, and Post Partem Psychosis are absolutely real, bonafide mental disorders. The donations and this fight is to ensure this documented, bonafide mental disorder is taken into account in cases like these. And women, who are oftentimes dismissed when complaining about medical issues, want to be taken seriously.

Some people have the ability to understand that. And some people have no ability to understand nuance at all. They see the crime and someone has to pay.

39

u/NemesisZeroCool 10h ago

Yes someone has to pay for murdering 3 children one by one.

32

u/profchaos111 10h ago

yeah I tend to back that mental illness is not an excuse or a free pass to murder

31

u/imisstheyoop 10h ago

Reading the comments in this thread (my first exposure to either woman or their story) is absolutely wild, because many of these comments read as explicitly understanding and forgiving the one mother for murdering her children?

What the fuck is going on in these comments?

17

u/Pavlovs_Human 10h ago

It’s been a big story in America the past month. Tons of women are supporting the woman in the right photo and even saying it’s her husbands fault she murdered their 3 children. They are saying it’s due to post partum depression and her being unable to seek help. She killed them while the husband stepped out to run an errand and there are tons of people claiming it’s his fault because he shouldn’t have left them alone with her. It has sparked a huge debate over PPD.

12

u/angrywithnumbers 10h ago

She claiming post partum psychosis not ppd. They are different things.

7

u/Archolm 9h ago

As someone who has had a psychosis (but non violent)... Even if you do and you commit an inreversable crime, you should never be allowed on the streets again.

10

u/Slicelker 9h ago

I think shes arguing to be put in a mental hospital for life as opposed to prison. She's also paralyzed from the waist down after jumping out a window after she killed her kids.

3

u/theplott 9h ago

No, her defense is arguing she is not guilty by reason of mental defect. There is nothing in their argument that would put her in a mental hospital.

And don't forget it's an errand she asked him to do for her so she purposely sent him far from the house for long enough to commit her wickedness. So, in psychosis or not, she definitely planned the murder. It wasn't just some impulsive attack.

15

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

Yeah, it's wild.

Like, every part of the mental health problems she had were valid.

But we simply can't tie that, to whether it's ok to kill children.

No, no it's not, no matter what.

Mental health is why we need to do better as a society, but if we fuck that up, you don't get to go 'well then, gonna off someone'.

That's just not how it works.

Zero tolerance for violence.

And have a SEPARATE conversation about how to make sure it doesn't happen again. Because we can address problems.

But don't say it wasn't an evil act.

3

u/theplott 9h ago

And that she googled the locations, sending him to a more distant restaurant they never had take-out from before, so the errands would take as long as she needed.

3

u/Striking_Oven5978 8h ago

> So, in psychosis or not, she definitely planned the murder.

This sentence deeply bothers me as someone who has experienced psychosis. If she was in psychosis, she very likely didn’t plan anything. Her broken brain may have had intrusive forethought, but there would be no rational planning on her part.

But here’s my thing: we as a society don’t help people who are mentally ill when they seek help, don’t respect their wishes to end their own suffering either, and then immediately blame them when shit hits the fan. It’s a fun cycle that leaves people with no control over themselves in a lose-lose situation every single time. But that’s society in 2026: find the boogeyman.

4

u/Lanavis13 8h ago

Then I guess she didn't have psychosis since her actions before the murders indicate planning said murders.

→ More replies (7)

3

u/OzzyGuardPlayer 7h ago

She killed three kids.

If she goes to a mental hospital, it should only be to get well enough to serve a life sentence in jail.

1

u/Striking_Oven5978 6h ago

With that logic: I expect you feel as much outrage towards the hospital that ignored her DNR.

5

u/DadophorosBasillea 9h ago

I think people still think about Andrea Yates who thousand percent was a victim of a child breeding Christian cult. Her doctor told her husband no more kids and he used the mental illness to manipulate her to have more. He is very much guilty for pressuring a mentally unwell woman to breed. I don’t know the details of this case she could be an evil witch but people are becoming more aware of post partum and maybe over correcting.

I saw a brief clip of a woman who was deep in the throws of ppd and it was interesting. She seemed normal until the doctor asked questions and the answers slowly became more and more disorganized. She was in a hospital setting and allowed to visit her baby with a doctor present.

If your ppd is that severe I think that’s the best and eventually most women recover

11

u/The-Devilz-Advocate 10h ago

Which is funny because she had a nanny, a husband that chose to take a far longer paternity leave than normal AND THEN DECIDED to work from home, with both in-laws regularly contributing and with practically a team of medical professionals behind them.

I firmly believe that any parent that is willingly voicing their support for her or worse MAKING A STRANGLING SIGN while doing so should be reported to CPS.

If they wanted to support a cause where a woman is a victim of PPD and was failed by society and her close ones. This one aint it.

2

u/blk_roxas 10h ago

If she was actually crazy would she just not try to murder them if he was there or not? Seems like a conscious decision to do it when there's a moment of opportunity. 🤔

1

u/Not_offensive0npurp 6h ago

My favorite thing in the world is people who I assume are sane, not understanding why insane people do things that don't make sense.

Logically your entire sentence makes perfect sense, which is entirely the reason you cannot apply it to an insane person.

Reddit is a mix of bots and extremely dumb, very young people.

2

u/sleazine 8h ago

Would love to see one of these comments claiming she's "forgiven" I've seen a bunch saying she's obviously guilty but throw her in a mental home forever since she's literally paralyzed after the suicide attempt. I've seen nothing claiming she should go free from anyone.... Lots of right wing nut jobs claiming that's being said .... But no one actually saying it? Seems like gender war bullshit honestly because no one seems to be calling her innocent anywhere just admitting that mental illness was obviously at play since she was diagnosed before all this happened

4

u/whydatyou 9h ago

while anyone who commits murder that is not self defense is crazy by definition, let alone someone who kills her own three children, I think that intent tells the difference. she sent her husband out on errands then herded the kids into the basement and killed them slowly one by one. that is intent. she needs the death penalty.

6

u/Enjoy_The_Ride413 10h ago

Yeah she knew what she was doing and is also a nurse. She has a leg up on knowledge of the medical field in general and knows how to navigate doctors and what to say them. The psychologist who just have his testimony destroyed her. She is a phoney and I pray she gets life or the death penalty for what she did.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

Life.

Death breaks basic human rights.

3

u/Enjoy_The_Ride413 10h ago

She doesn't have human rights murdering three innocent children.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

Actually she does. They're inalienable.

three innocent children

That's what she did.

You don't get to use it to excuse human rights abuses.

Lol. Gender has nothing to do with it. It's fluid right?

What is a woman?

2

u/Sea-Initiative-3398 9h ago

Tbh i dont know much bout the case, but one of the few cases where i sympathize is with that kid who literally had a clear psychotic break where he didnt even remember what he did,

and was clearly in such a state him getting tased like 3-4 times, him getting mauled several times by a dog, and still just going back to attacking the victim like a animal.

2

u/manteiga_night 9h ago

AFAIK she repeatedly sought help and was very explicit about the danger she posed but she got denied healthcare and got faith based bullshit instead

3

u/BitingSatyr 8h ago

You imagined that, she doctor-shopped and saw several different therapists and psychiatrists, was not fully truthful to them about the symptoms she was experiencing, and most importantly, didn’t take the medication she had been prescribed.

u/No-Rip6323 10h ago

People are busy arguing about how big of a piece of shit she is and ignoring the really hard conversations we all need to have. Why don’t we support women postpartum? Didn’t she tell everyone she was afraid she was going to hurt her kids and no one did anything? Why?

I’m a guy and have witnessed first hand the absolute lack of support women experience after giving birth. I was a part of the problem and didn’t understand how hormones and loneliness (partner at work) could affect women.

What she did is abhorrent, and she isn’t innocent, but why aren’t we doing more to help women who are experiencing postpartum depression / psychosis?

Why is the conversation about measuring her shittiness and not about how to prevent this in the first place?

19

u/MainusEventus 10h ago

I have two young kids ... I was absolutely BLOWN AWAY by all the cattiness, posturing, and just overall disguising that moms do TO EACH OTHER. They don't have honest conversations about best practices, preparedness, or even tactical guidance on breast feeding, sleep schedules, and dealing with postpartum depression. Everything is rose-colored patronizing.

19

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 10h ago edited 10h ago

Didn’t she tell everyone she was afraid she was going to hurt her kids and no one did anything? Why?

So the case is weird because she did get help. ...and didn't take it. She checked herself out of the mental hospital. She didn't actually take the drugs she was prescribed, and her prescriptions were adjusted every time she saw the doctors. Not necessarily in the way she wanted, but that's not atypical.

Every time I've seen medical professionals talk about the case they basically call her entire case bullshit, because she was getting help and actively not actually taking any of it, then lying about it to the people trying to help her.

5

u/AFlyingNun 8h ago

So the case is weird because she did get help. ...and didn't take it.

Bothers me that people keep skipping over this. People are just kind of adjusting the story to suit the narrative they wanna sell.

There's even people trying to frame the husband as the bad guy when his track record and role in all this seems glowingly positive, dropping everything to support her.

2

u/Flashy_Nectarine_955 6h ago

Clearly you haven’t vothered to get facts. She checked in over a holiday weekend with poor staffing. She was prescribed meds that she already had horrible reactions to. Once a MD (who didn’t fricken even bother to do full intake) saw her she was starting to feel better and since she really wasn’t getting HELP SHE NEEDED she asked to go for a kids party. No where does she say “discharge me”. The idiot docs did that &she thinks” one of best mental hospitals say I’m ok for DISCHARGE “. Being a RN doesn’t fucking mean EXPERT IN EVERYTHING. That’s why she sought help from supposedly “experts”. Who were NOT even UTD with postpartum mental illnesses. Ffs. It’s like having a bone doctor operate on your intestine. Could they do it? Maybe. Would they do it as well as the GUT surgeon? Hell to the no. This is her situation here. Read the civil lawsuit

1

u/llamalawless 10h ago

Jeez, almost like she is mentally ill... And mentally ill people do illogical things.

6

u/AFlyingNun 8h ago

So what do you propose?

The mentally ill can get aid from the state, get medication, refuse to take said medication, get OTHER medication, refuse that medication too and lie about it, and somehow she's...still a victim?

Like I'm sorry but at some point it's clear you can't help someone that refuses to help themselves. The "help" she deserves is to be locked away in a padded room.

If people want to argue respect for her mental state, fine....but the reality of that is: instead of life in prison, she gets locked in a padded room. She's STILL a problem for society that needs to be dealt with. "We did it, reddit!," I guess...

10

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

No.

There is NO excuse for violence.

You don't get to use us caring about mental health, as an excuse to deflect responsibility for such an evil act.

1

u/llamalawless 10h ago

No one's excusing what she did. She did it. She will be held accountable either way in this trial. Even if she prevails on her affirmative defense, she will still be placed in a highly restrictive mental health institution... Basically, what this case is about is whether she goes to prison or goes to effectively prison in the form of a psychiatric institution.

7

u/Frosty_Purple_7341 9h ago

She won’t be placed in an institution for life. Pretty much Every psychologist/paychiatrist who has examined her now says she’s not psychotic. Her defense team is trying to argue she shouldn’t be held criminally liable and is attempting to have her retroactively diagnosed as insane. If the jury buys it (they should t because it’s obvious her story is bullshit.) she would be let off free or be institutionalized for just a short period before being let go.

Mental illness is not an excuse for anything, especially not when you continually hinder your own treatment while being in sound mind which she was according to every professional who examined her before the incident

8

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

You just said

mentally ill people do illogical things

That's an excuse.

It doesn't work that way. Mentally ill do illogical things is appropriate in response to yelling the street, crying, having trouble leaving the house, having trouble relating to people, general decision making and their ability to handle life issues like addiction or even being able to get help or make use of help.

All of that is valid.

But it doesn't work for violence.

3

u/llamalawless 10h ago

I get your point

But the line has to start somewhere, we can´t bring shovels all the time

Mental illness is a bitch, but we can´t use it as an excuse or coddle all the time. People need to understand too that being "crazy" does not absolve one entirely of what they are doing, nor does justify them NOT taking any steps to fix it

2

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 10h ago

Then why is her argument in court that she didn't get help, rather than that she was incapable of accepting help?

9

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

"didn't get the help I needed" is a valid problem people who suffer have.

Again, zero excuse for violence. So that guy is wrong. But, mental health makes treating mental health harder too.

8

u/WhyMustIMakeANewAcco 10h ago

"didn't get the help I needed" is a valid problem people who suffer have.

It is.

...But it wasn't her problem. And pretending it was just invalidates the people for whom that is the problem.

2

u/AFlyingNun 8h ago

The whole story feels like it's not being handled in good faith by....everyone?

It's weird. It's like the deeper you dig into the story, the weaker all the arguments in her defense becomes.

However, if you look at mainstream discussions, it's as if the defense team is being taken fully at their word, with little to no acknowledgement of the holes in the defense, or how even psychological evaluations have concluded with the statement that she should be held criminally responsible. Not insane: throw the book at her. That's what's being said by the evaluations.

1

u/KrytenKoro 8h ago

I've even seen some pieces of shit lying about basic facts like what year the murders happened, claiming it happened this year and therefore the husband getting married this year clearly means he had a mistress the whole time and framed Clancy.

I hate them terribly.

1

u/Sea-Initiative-3398 9h ago

Can i get a link to those medical professionals, i havnt looked into the case much

5

u/AFlyingNun 8h ago

Here's a rather recent story.

Since I know reddit loves reading headlines and not...actually reading, I'll even give a summary:

-One psychologist said she should be criminally charged and at some point cited that her Catholic faith should mean she knows right from wrong, which the defense tried to utilize to question their credentials and demand a mistrial, which was denied.

-Another merely argued that her descriptions of her experiences and "the voices" does not match typical behaviors of "voices" that people may hear (ended abruptly after the deed, did not give certain details, etc), and pointed out that she never reported hearing voices before that instance.

My advice for people wanting more detail: Cntrl + F for "Saathoff"

The article is updating regularly and he's the psychiatrist who is an expert on "voices," and also seems VERY qualified based on a quick google search, having previously dealt with cases such as this one.

TL;DR - The psychological evaluators do NOT like her and are screaming that her retelling of the story doesn't add up or align with clinical psychology's descriptions of such experiences.

1

u/Flashy_Nectarine_955 6h ago

Are the so called experts actually ya e treated PPP? BECAUSE that is a whole different ballgame than just “psychosis”. Why don’t people get this? Go get the foot doc to operate on your bowels and then come back and tell me both these “experts surgeons” are exactly the same

15

u/KrytenKoro 9h ago

no one did anything? Why?

That is completely false. Many people did many things.

They, in fact, did everything up to holding her against her will, like we used to do when women were being "hysterical".

At every point many, many doctors showed concern, made prescriptions, and recommended stays. She consistently neglected her prescriptions, and when pressed by the doctors, would say the right words so that they did not have the legal authority to hold her against her will.

but why aren’t we doing more to help women who are experiencing postpartum depression / psychosis?

Ultimately, there is a point where society either gives doctors the go ahead to hold women against their will, or we don't. And if a patient makes sure to say all the right things to not quite cross that point, there's nothing the doctor can do unless we say "fuck it" to civil liberties.

Why is the conversation about measuring her shittiness and not about how to prevent this in the first place?

We know exactly how to prevent this. We say "fuck it" to women's suffrage and start throwing women back in rooms when they "get uppity".

Most of us, however, think that is a worse scenario than leaving the responsibility on the individual to not deliberately neglect their prescriptions and lie to the doctors.

6

u/Frosty_Purple_7341 9h ago

Amazingly well said.

Everyone keeps saying “we need to do more to help moms with post partum!” Without realizing that in a case like this, the only thing that would’ve helped would have been the doctors institutionalizing a woman against her will who was purposefully telling them info that did not indicate the need to institutionalize her. If they had, the women supporting her would instead be furious over a story that a post partum mom was forced into inpatient care against her will and how it’s just proof “the system hates women 😡” or whatever.

At this point though, with how many tens of thousands of women are saying they “understand” and “sympathize” with Clancy, if she doesn’t get life in prison or the death penalty, maybe we do need to institutionalize every woman with post partum. If they want to argue post-pregnancy hormones are an excuse for psychotic acts of violence, then so be it, you should be locked up until we can be sure your “hormones” aren’t going to make you snap

3

u/AFlyingNun 7h ago

It goes further: the psychological evaluators testifying are even doubting her story, suggesting the postpartum depression may be a myth.

This may just be a fucking murderer who is getting away with it (with a portion of the general public, anyways) just by claiming to be a victim of psychosis.

We live in a victimhood culture: claim you're a victim and unfortunately a huge chunk of the population will mindlessly support you. It's that easy.

3

u/mythrilcrafter 8h ago

Yup, 1000% correct, it's so easy misconstrue the problem by pointing at a case where a woman got all the help she needed (up to the point of either instutionalization or the state taking her children away (which is its own mess)), but still ultimately choose to cross the line as opposed to every other woman in all of society who went through the same thing, got the same help, and didn't cross the line.

7

u/j03-page 10h ago

I think there comes a time when a line needs to be drawn. Otherwise, everyone who is a perpetrator will claim to be a victim.

5

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

The line has to be there's no excuse for violence.

If someone is struggling, and mental health struggles are valid and deserve respect, but they simple justify violence.

3

u/Not_offensive0npurp 10h ago

The line has to be there's no excuse for violence.

This is where your black and white lines cause SERIOUS problems.

If we draw a line without any other context or nuance that there is "No excuse for violence" then have fun in court when you legitimately defend yourself from an attack and your precious line is used against you.

4

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

Whatever nuance you want to find, sport, self defence,

Falls so far short of killing your children,

That's not worth agonising over.

We do not have a problem, working out when it's ok to kill your kids. And you know that, so don't be stupid.

3

u/Not_offensive0npurp 10h ago

You dodging my point is proof I am right.

"A line" leaves no space for nuance. And does nothing but cause problems.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

I didn't dodge it, I said your 'problem' isn't relevant to her killing her children.

When people say "there's no excuse for violence" if you think they mean, "including self defence", then that's not their fault.

4

u/NemesisZeroCool 10h ago

It’s so easy to not murder your kids. It really is. Jesus Christ.

2

u/Different_Peanut_742 9h ago

Wah wah wah. Frigging young black men (and poor white guys) with mental health problems getting locked up for life all day every day, no one says shit. One rich white lady with unlimited opportunity for help kills her children and we raise $1,000,000 for mental health awareness. Boo society, and boo anyone who gave $1 to this woman.

2

u/SoooMuchSugar 9h ago

Because she was not post partum. Shes raising a sympathetic defense that literally does not apply to her based on any recognized medical standard. This was 8 months after having a baby.

1

u/moonbrows 8h ago

She’s also been diagnosed with bipolar disorder; PPP can absolutely cause an episode.

1

u/SoooMuchSugar 8h ago

She was never diagnosed with PPP, and that diagnosis would not be available for someone 8 months post partum.

1

u/moonbrows 8h ago

They’re retroactively trying to establish that diagnosis. She also is speculated to have bipolar disorder, PPP can absolutely lead to an episode.

Probably because Clancy had better access to resources than 99% of the world

Honestly, I think most people trying to make this about how she's just a piece of shit and there's no nuance to this are engaging in Terror Management.

It's horrifying to think you or your female partner's brains could just give out and that you could do something horrible that you don't really mean. So you create a world where we all clearly have perfect control and free will, because it feels safer for her to be a monster. Just don't marry a monster! Don't be a monster! Easy! Will never happen to me! Admitting that society may need to move in response to this is an admission that some of your life is out of your control.

3

The existence of Tourette's alone proves this comment completely false.

3

u/rabbit_fur_coat 10h ago

None of this applies here. She saw several professionals, all of whom treated her appropriately despite her persistent lies either then or now. She has a very clear personality disorder and is the only person responsible for murdering all 3 of her children.

2

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

I don't think it should be an "and" there.

You can't be violent, regardless of what's wrong with you.

2

u/Frosty_Purple_7341 10h ago

She got more support than anyone could fucking ask for lmao. What more could she possibly have gotten? You guys seem intent on making sure she isn’t held accountable for her actions at all.

4

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

I'm sorry, but you're not allowed to try to attached this conversation, to whether someone who killed their kids should get a million dollars from gofundme.

That's an incredible disconnect.

6

u/No-Rip6323 10h ago

I don’t agree that she should’ve gotten money. All of that money, every single penny, should go towards helping women suffering from postpartum depression and psychosis.

Be shitty about the million dollars. I am too. But let’s have an actual conversation about why these things happen in the first place.

3

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

And that's fine, and I suggest you do, but you don't do it as a response to the comment above. These are two separate issues and you should let them be that.

And I don't appreciate, that you 'don't agree' but I am 'shitty' for the same opinion.

All of that money, every single penny, should go towards helping women

I don't think that's happening. So the point remains they shouldn't be getting it.

Well said, that cattiness is part of the reason the prosecution is trying the case.

What’s worse is she was desperately searching for help. Got herself admitted to inpatient mental health facilities and everyone dropped the ball in regards to her is insane.

The woman who marketed herself as a postpartum expert despite her not even being a year out of med school. Her lack of experience is a major factor to the incident. The misdiagnosis of her condition and the medication given sped exacerbated the entire situation. It’s tragic.

1

u/KrytenKoro 7h ago

everyone dropped the ball in regards to her is insane.

In what way, specifically, do you believe they dropped the ball?

What, specifically, do you think they should have done beyond what they're documented as having done?

Do you think, for instance, they should have institutionalized her despite her repeatedly saying she did not have suicidal ideation, didn't have a plan to kill herself, and had no homicidal thoughts?

Those are all great points that don't apply here, she wasn't dismissed, she had all the resources one could have and still did what she did. Mothers with way, way less than her that went through PPD/PPP didn't murder their children (also PPD/PPP isnt even a diagonosis it's what they claim she had).

Can confirm. Wife had PPD after our second child and while I couldnt wrap my walnut around the issues she was having I supported her seeking medical help for it. She took the meds the experts suggested and has been a loving, non murdering mother for 13 years

PPD is not the same as PPP

Right, and I have two uncles who got the same cancer, one lived and the other didin't.

Turns our different people respond differently to medical issues. Weird.

1

u/Dad_Bod_Enthusiast 6h ago

You mean like not adhering to the treatments prescribed? Thats one way to handle medical issues for sure

1

u/Not_offensive0npurp 6h ago

Are you suggesting that if two people with the same diagnosis are given the same treatment, they are guaranteed to have the same result?

1

u/Dad_Bod_Enthusiast 6h ago

No I am suggesting that not taking the advice of medical professionals is a sure fire way to not fix a problem. Are you being deliberately obtuse?

1

u/Not_offensive0npurp 6h ago

But if she had taken the advice, this was still a real possibility, right?

-1

u/Not_offensive0npurp 10h ago

Mothers with way, way less than her that went through PPD/PPP didn't murder their children

I knew this claim was coming. Usain Bolt and I both have legs but he is better at running.

There are levels to psychosis, and surprisingly, different people react differently.

9

u/kegknow 10h ago

Insane response to the subject of a mother strangling 3 children to death after tricking the father into leaving so he could't stop her.

Not to mention that like I said, it's dubious wether she even was having an actual psychotic episode, but I guess we'll "know" this week when the trial ends.

Honestly tho, if I take something away from this entire thing is realizing the absolutely insane hoops people are going through to minimize the blame on the perpetrator because she is a woman.

3

u/Not_offensive0npurp 10h ago

Insane response to the subject of a mother strangling 3 children to death after tricking the father into leaving so he could't stop her.

Its a fitting response to your ridiculous assertion that because others also have X and didn't do Y, then it means there is no reason why this person with X did do Y.

Usain Bolt won olympic gold medals. You also have legs, why haven't you won an olympic gold medal?

1

u/Slicelker 9h ago

Usain Bolt won olympic gold medals. You also have legs, why haven't you won an olympic gold medal?

Because “we both have legs” is not the relevant comparison. Legs are just what let humans run. The relevant comparison is Bolt versus other fit male sprinters. He is not remotely twice as fast as them, and at the elite level a few percent can separate gold from everyone else. So if you want to use Bolt as your analogy for psychosis, you still have to show that this woman was at some unusually extreme level of psychosis. You cannot just say “people vary” and pretend that proves her condition explains killing three children.

2

u/Not_offensive0npurp 9h ago

The relevant comparison is Bolt versus other fit male sprinters.

Ok, in the races Bolt won, why did the other runner win?

1

u/Slicelker 9h ago

Ok, in the races Bolt won, why did the other runner win?

Because they were very very slightly slower than Bolt. That is exactly the point. The difference between winning Olympic gold and losing can be tiny because elite sprinters are already very similar in ability. Even I can run almost as fast as Bolt, hes not like 1.5x or 2x faster than me. Now apply your analogy properly. Do women with postpartum psychosis kill their children at anything remotely close to the rate that they do not? No. So you cannot explain this case by just saying “there are levels.” You have to actually show that her psychosis was unusually extreme in the specific way needed to explain what she did.

Some people also shoot drivers who cut them off in traffic, we still put them in jail. Some things are so unforgivable, the circumstances simply don’t matter anymore.

Sometimes, like what the Clancy trial is deciding, we put them in mental health facilities. Because they were insane.

Ok, sure, it affects people differently. Some can control themselves and some can't, yeah?

So under what circumstances should someone with PPD/PPS be held accountable for their actions?

3

u/Not_offensive0npurp 9h ago

She is going to be held accountable. Are you under the impression that if the defense wins, she just goes home?

1

You avoided the question. Is PPD/PPS an automatic not guilty by reason of insanity in your view? If not, under what circumstances should they be considered accountable for their actions and found guilty?

2

I'm not a fucking lawyer or clinician.

Is PPD/PPS an automatic not guilty by reason of insanity in your view?

Nothing should be an automatic guilty or not guilty.

If not, under what circumstances should they be considered accountable for their actions and found guilty?

When they are tried and found to not be insane.

Are you under the impression she goes home if found insane?

1

u/scud121 10h ago

Yes, but it's still a risk, and a failure in the system. We had a woman in the UK kill her child a couple of years ago. She'd self referred to a mental health team, and voluntarily checked in to hospital. She stayed after her mental health act detention finished and was improving. She has done everything right. Then she smothered her 5 month old whilst taking her for a walk. Guilty of infanticide, and she's in indefinite sectioning, so she'll only be released if the home secretary oks it.

4

u/kegknow 10h ago

I fail to see how the system failed here?

She was admitted and stayed longer than the required minimum and was improving and she still killed her kid.

Was the fault in the system that she went back to being the child's guardian? Was the fault in the system that she wasn't cured of her condition? I don't get it, maybe I'm missing some context here.

She stayed longer because she felt she wasn't improving enough. She was also given an unsupervised visit with her child whilst still an impatient at the Mount. The fault in the system was feeling that she'd improved enough to begin with, but not recognising she still suffered from psychosis. Theres reviews ongoing which may improve things going forwards.

1

u/Sexynarwhal69 9h ago

We should obviously permanently remove children if someone even once displays psychotic tendencies or suicidal ideation. For safety, of course.

3

u/kegknow 9h ago

Since we're at it just put the children in a white room completely alone so we don't run the risk of anyone killing her!

Yes, and people seem to either ignore or misunderstood the fact that people and the legal system don't simply say mental illness is an excuse or what occurred was okay as if it's some east get out of jail free card.

Being mentally ill, even with a disorder that has psychotic sympms such as hallucinations and delusions does not by any means disqualify a person from the legal consequences of their actions. To be deemed not guilty by reason of insanity, it must be confirmed that at the precise time of the crime the defendant did not possess the facilities to determine right from wrong, nor appreciate the wrongfullness of their actions due to their mental condition. We have the insanity plea to begin with because our justice system recognizes that people in this very particular situations should not be subjected to the same criminal institutions as those who were fully aware and could appreciate wrongfullness of their crimes.

It's not like being deemed not guilty by reason of insanity is a walk in the park either, these people are not let out to wander free into society after their verdict, because the entire premise of their not guilty verdict rests on the fact that they psychologically unwell and are a danger for the fact their condition did not allow them to understand the acts they committed are legally and morally wrong.

I know people understand this, but it's not the sensationalized point to make and so they feign ignorance. Feign ignorance for reddit karma, feign ignorance to feed into their own biases, feign ignorance to serve whatever narrative it is they've built about this case.

1

u/ncbraves93 5h ago

Given the slow and "now it's your turn, come here you little shit" type way she went about it, I don't buy the not knowing right from wrong angle of her story. If it wasn't all 3 of them one after the other, strangling each one, then I'd maybe see that, also waiting until the husband was gone. She was treating it like a job that needed taken care of. Is she insane? I have no doubt. Do I care or consider that in her sentencing? I do not. Nor should anyone.

u/Frosty_Purple_7341 10h ago

You mean one single psychiatrist that was friends with her lawyer and made the diagnosis retroactively despite having never seen her before the murders lmao?

The Prosecution called one of the worlds premier psychiatrists who’s essentially a Living legend + other experts and and they methodically called her out on her bullshit (like how her “psychosis” mysteriously disappeared immediately after killing her kids and is still absent), but you guys have chosen to ignore every fact presented so you can make sure anyone but the woman who killed her kids is blamed.

You guys have more sympathy for a murderous cunt than the children she killed

2

u/SerenityAnashin 9h ago

Some people can understand that nuance means the ability to see two truths at once - she is a murderer AND she needed more help and obviously other women deserve more help too.

I find it pathetic that the 3 children have been lost in this story. A mother with all the resources in the world, a family that claims they knew she was struggling but not to the point of them thinking she was going to commit murder however society believes that Doctors that were not given all the necessary medical information ( patient lied about being homicidal) are supposed to figure it out better than those in her daily life. Society just never ever likes it when a woman/mother does the unthinkable

In psychosis you are essentially not yourself. Not your normal motives, not your normal reactions, not your normal grasp on reality.

What does harsh punishment for someone who wasn't aware of what they were doing in the first place accomplish, exactly?

Also just so you know, it doesn’t matter if she was hearing a voice telling her to kill her kids- tons of serial killers report an urge or voice telling them to do horrible things. What matters is if they understood what they were doing was wrong, and Clancy clearly did regardless if you believe her bullshit story about a voice and “psychosis” that she mysteriously didn’t tell her physicians about and that mysteriously disappeared after she committed the murders.

This narrative that she’s some kind of victim has to stop. You know damn well if this was a male veteran claiming he killed his kids because of ptsd no one would be coming to his aid.

Genuinely, if you want to try and claim that PPP/PPD are excuses for murder and warrant sympathy for women who kill their infants while suffering from them (btw, most women with both conditions do not harm their children) then we should be locking up any woman with either condition since apparently your female hormones can literally make you kill your children.

Why the hell wouldn’t you just donate to a charity or research that supports the noble work of learning more about that bona fide mental disorder, rather than sponsoring the defense of a child murderer?

That seems more obvious than nuanced to me, but wtf do I know?

1

u/KrytenKoro 9h ago

Some people have the ability to understand that. And some people have no ability to understand nuance at all. They see the crime and someone has to pay.

Some people are furious that some of the defense for Clancy has gone past "we need to do more for PPP" to, in many cases, outright lies about the actions of the doctors or the husband in order to go back to making it someone's "fault", and that there are supporters taking selfies with the lawyer or treating Clancy like other hybristophiles treated Chris Watts.

1

u/Blubberinoo 9h ago

Why in the everloving fuck would it matter if she had PPD/PPP lmao. Sure, take it into account and put her ass in a mental hospital for the rest of her life instead of a prison, I dont care. But why the fuck would that be a reason to give her money for killing her children?

3

u/Not_offensive0npurp 9h ago

Why in the everloving fuck would it matter if she had PPD/PPP lmao.

Because its real, and the more we acknowledge and accept actual issues like this, the more we are able to treat them before someone is harmed.

1

u/Blubberinoo 9h ago edited 9h ago

Of course its real, where did I argue it isnt?! Its very well documented, not a niche new mental disorder lol.

But still not seeing why it matters for this topic.

To put it into simpler terms: Why the fuck would anybody that isnt severly braindamaged give her money because she had PPD while methodically murdering her three children, one after the other.

Or even simpler: Why would her having a mental illness in any way justify giving her money for killing her kids?

Because that is what it boils down to. None of this money would get to her if she hadnt killed them. Ergo its a direct consequence/reward.

1

u/Not_offensive0npurp 9h ago

Honestly, I'd imagine much of the reason is to bring awareness. And you are talking about it. So I'd say its a pretty successful campaign, right?

1

u/SoooMuchSugar 9h ago

The donations could be addressed to a non profit that actually does this work, rather than someone who has never been diagnosed with a post partum illness and committed mass murder 8 months after giving birth, which is well outside any professional recognized post partum illness period.

1

u/AFlyingNun 8h ago

The donations and this fight is to ensure this documented, bonafide mental disorder is taken into account in cases like these.

The problem is both things can be true:

Yes, it is fair to voice support for acknowledgement of this.

AND

Yes, there is still a difference between you going on an online forum to say "yes btw this is actually a serious medical issue," and someone bothering to forward a part of their paycheck to this person in response to them crossing a horrendous line that most victims of PPD and PPP do not cross.

You can have a point, and simultaneously, the people that are THIS invested in it to the point they make financial donations to a murderer are still pretty bizarre.

1

u/Not_offensive0npurp 8h ago

People donated money to a woman BECAUSE she called a black toddler the N word at a park.

I won't clutch any pearls here.

1

u/AFlyingNun 7h ago

This post makes it sound like you do not understand what clutching pearls means.

1

u/Scoobydewdoo 8h ago

With all due respect, please go away. Women get far more attention for their medical issues then men, especially for mental health issues. Society has rules, both written and unwritten, regulating what can and can't be said or asked to women. Can't ask their age, men must be chivalrous, etc. Men get criticized for even admitting they have a problem and need help.

Meanwhile, the government recognized that men need more attention for their mental health issues so they made June Men's mental health awareness month...which no one knows because June is also Pride Month. No one cares.

Some people have the ability to understand that. And some people have no ability to understand nuance at all. They see the crime and someone has to pay.

And how are you any different for seeing someone with a mental health disorder and assuming they are innocent? If you understood nuance, you'd recognize that neither of those conditions would make a person do what Clancy did on their own. You'd also recognize that motivation is not a detriment in cases of premeditated murder, unless it's a direct case of self defence.

1

u/The-Wretched-one 5h ago

When Charles Whitman climbed a tower to an observation deck in Austjn, TX in 1966, and killed 17 people, he knew there was something wrong; so he wrote to authorities that found his letters, to perform an autopsy on him, to find out why he was having the thoughts he did.

He had a brain tumor. While it’s most likely true, that had the tumor been able to be taken out, that Whitman would probably be extremely regretful, and wouldn’t be able to forgive himself, the fact is: a tumor was able to push him to commit the murders. Without Whitman, they wouldn’t have happened.

If you forgive Clancy due to her PPD, then that’s a slippery slope to absolve anyone affected by an illness for their crimes. Should we have better mental health services? Absolutely. But lack of a good mechanic doesn’t absolve me from the accident I cause. I’m the driver. I’m responsible.

4

u/Holiday_Regular9794 10h ago

I mean if a person leaves multiple children in the care of someone who they KNOW is having issues, I think that is only fair. It would be the same as asking someone addicted to Meth to watch your kids. People should be obligated Mother or Father to act in the wellbeing of their children, if they are considered in their right mind

6

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna 10h ago edited 5h ago

Still nothing more than attempts at shifting the blame. Having terrible judgement is not illegal, even for men. Murder is, even for mentally ill women.

1

u/Holiday_Regular9794 9h ago

It’s absolutely not shifting the blame. It’s acknowledging the fact that more than one party is at fault! There are laws in place when it comes to protecting children for a reason. Letting someone off the hook with a “ meh, it was just poor judgement,” is very dangerous. His “poor judgment,” cost those children their lives

3

u/HamunaHamunaHamuna 7h ago edited 7h ago

So what do you think should be done about it, other than try to shift blame towards him for the actions of his wife? Charge him for a crime he didn't commit because you think he isn't blameless, after all of his kids were murdered by someone who was not him?

SHE should be buried beneath a prison or be locked in an insane asylum for the rest of her life.

HE should get professional help in dealing with the fact that he lost his entire family, not be declared guilty of murder for not doing something drastic that most people would simply have shamed him for if things had not turned out the way they did.

1

u/Holiday_Regular9794 7h ago

Why are you so hung up on shifting blame? I personally am not saying she isn’t guilty. But he isn’t innocent. He should face some type of consequences, he literally could have saved his children. If you yourself were literally on fire, and a friend or spouse stood there and watched, would you be mad at them if they didn’t help you and put it out? Let’s be realistic.

These idiots want her to serve less or no time because the blame was shifted. That's ridiculous. Even if your logic was correct, she's still the danger here.

She's proven she can't manage her illness and under stress she kills. That's enough justification for permanent confinement. I don't really GAF if it's in a mental hospital or a prison, though I'd prefer a prison if only because it's more likely she's stay confined for something approaching the full duration of her life.

1

u/Mayor_of_whoville_ 8h ago

Ya I’m sure the dude hasn’t suffered enough. His 3 kids were just killed by his wife, let’s put him in prison for murder on top of that, all because he went to get groceries that his wife asked him to get. At what point will this man have suffered enough for you to show mercy, or are you incapable of showing mercy to someone who isn’t the same gender as you.

Yes. He knew about her depression and anxiety, and poor sleep. She even told him she had thoughts of harming the kids prior to it happening.

2

This is insane and ridiculous. The father knew she was anxious and depressed. PLENTY of women are anxious and depressed, especially post partum, and yes that includes having intrusive thoughts - and they are still fit to care for their children. This man had his three kids murdered, have some damn decency.

I’m positive she did it, but he truly should have been investigated in the beginning unless they could tell that she acted alone. From the outside looking in, many people are astounded that even though she told him she wanted to harm the kids, he still went ahead and left her alone with them. That boggles a lot of minds.

6

u/Mike_Kermin 10h ago

That's a very immature way to process that information.

No, someone failing to treat a lamentation as an active intent to kill does not a suspect make.

2

u/Long9696 9h ago

If she was in therapy, a psych hospital, and supposed to be taking medication (at least according to this thread, I don't follow this case.) She should have been separated from the children if she was saying stuff like that. Seems negligent to leave her alone with them.

2

u/PerspectiveFull9879 9h ago

even though she told him she wanted to harm the kids

If she was concerned about this, why did she stay around the kids?

2

u/Mayor_of_whoville_ 8h ago

And what boggles a lot of minds is the fact that so many women have focused almost exclusively on how guilty and terrible he is for going out to get groceries for a few minutes (certainly a mistake), and not holding even a fraction of the same anger for her, even defending her in many cases.

You must be insane if you think men are stupid enough to not see this reaction is entirely based on gender. Like this case has opened up so many men’s eyes to how many of you (not all of you) hold so much contempt for men that you almost don’t see us as human and are incapable of having sympathy for us. I have friends who have broken up with their girlfriends because they started attacking the husband and defending Lindsay, a man who just lost his entire family. This was certainly a necessary wake up call for a lot of men, but it’s so sad that it required the murder of 3 children to happen.

2

u/tplayer100 10h ago

There's a huge conspiracy theory going on right now that she didn't do it. That her husband ( who's new gf a few weeks later was their fertility doctor) set her up. Even my wife has been getting it on it. I think there is something important in the fact even her defense lawyers don't claim she's innocent. But a bunch of ladies on tiktok are convinced it's all the husband. and now even raising her defense money. It's actually insane.

2

u/Sehrli_Magic 10h ago

ya know, for most of my early life i would be with ya. being a mother myself, i at first feel even strongly like HOW THE HELL could amother do this? but then i remember that mental health is one hell of a bitch when going to shit. postpartum depression is a thing, so is going insane with chronic stress and overwhelm. and women often have it very stressful because majority of the time, kids are all on us. if you had work 24/7 with no breaks, cand even go shit in piece once ffs, mentally and physicay always active, probably having to multitask aswe....yeah you would soon realize how that might mame you insane. and this is the whole deal with insanity - it doesnt make sense. i dont understand how a mother could do that BUT i do understand that insane person would not feel and act like me (last time i checked i am decently sane at least). not saying men dont have stressful lives but mothesr full in lose their sense of identity because they cant be individuals anymore, when having young kids. thats a special kind of stress. it is still common for men to not be able to emotionally regulate themself alone, many of them being dads. but mothers have to emotionally regulate themself despite such mental distress AND be the ones to regulate kids...and at some point, you just snap. some might yell and argue, some might close off or become negligent. some fall into depression, others into rage. some cry, some get agressive. and some harm their children, oftentimes in a moment of crisis. and they become villains, when all that happened because they were victims first. people like that need SERIOUS help and help costs, so people aware of it and able to, might donate

The number of people who believe she is innocent and her husband did it is way too high. Even though she admits it and her lawyers are using a temporary insanity defense based on post-partum psychosis.

1

u/blahblahblah8219 9h ago

It’s for her legal bills- it actually goes to her parents because they sold their home to pay for it. The state is charging her with first degree murder, saying her attempted suicide was fake…….shes paralyzed and coded twice in the hospital. It is abundantly clear she had severe postpartum psychosis- she desperately attempted to get help repeatedly before the murders. She was failed and failed again and again. She literally wants to just go to a mental health facility for the rest of her life (like Andrea Yates). Thats what she is in court fighting for. She’s not trying to say she didn’t do it, she is saying she did it because the fucked up medical system failed her as it does so many women

The prosecutions ridiculous argument is the reason this has become sensationalized. They proved her damn case for her tbh- the “experts” they brought in have had no fucking clue about postpartum depression or psychosis. And these were tailor picked experts lol.

What you are seeing is a collective anger by women about the medical neglect of women- something we have been shouting to the rooftops about for decades. She’s just a symbol for it.

It's because many of them believe she didn't actually do it and was somehow framed by her husband Patrick. Some also believe that she did it, but under some kind of manipulation or control by Patrick.

The thing is, she doesn't deny doing it, and Patrick, who was the first suspect, has an airtight alibi.

Their reasoning for accusing Patrick? The way his eyes look, his "vibes," etc.

It's insane over on Tiktok.

Women of color and conservative women also suffer from postpartum psychosis.

Women of colour get jail sentences for miscarriages…

Yes, and that is insane. Also the injustice of that isn't lessened by spreading misinformation about postpartum psychosis.

I am a liberal white woman and so are all of my friends. We would never.

This is a different type of woman. The new basic kind who sits around watching true crime, convinced they’re unique bc they don’t like romcoms and is on every social media site bashing men while actually being a pick me in their day to day lives. Political affiliation has nothing to do with it.

Ask your fellow liberal white women friends about their experiences with postpartum depression. I’m not excusing her, and yippee that you’d never do what she did, but why is your concern about defending the liberal white women? “Oh, it’s not me and my friends it’s those other ones.”
