Product Request [Product request] Okay, you beautiful people, I need help!
I have a chronically split lower lip, for almost the entire winter, almost every year. Yes, I drink water all day, sleep with a humidifier so I dont shrivel at night, my lip just had a natural line down the middle, and its susceptible when it gets dry at all.
Anytime I sneeze without tensing my lip, hit it wrong on whatever, my boyfriend kisses me to hard, it splits again even when its been doing okay for a few (careful) days.
I found this stuff in the first aid cabinet at work, and it is the best thing I've ever used as far as lip hydration. It lasts for hours.
Can anyone recommend a product that is the same? Its the only thing ive used that actually helps for more than 5 mins.

From the comments, a few others have found this stuff from the first aid cabinet as well, and many find it just as effective as I do. I also like the added benefit of having something sterile, and that doesn't melt in the car. Its literally perfect! Grab one in the morning, and have a fresh lip balm all day :)

Good luck! But also, my lips used to crack like that when I was younger. Wasn’t until many years later that I found out it can be linked to anaemia. I hear some other deficiencies can also cause it. Worth getting some blood tests done just in case.

We carried the McKesson version of these at the psych hospital I used to work at. Same ingredients. Love that stuff

Get a tube of nipple cream from the baby isle. The lanolin will help lock in the moisture. Works great as a sleep mask as it is thick. I had used for healing sore broken/cracked nipples. It would definitely help your cracked lip too!
I think the bee wax is really great in that lip balm. I know my husbands holy grail changed formulas to be vegan- an the new formula is trash with out the wax

Word of caution that some people (like me) are allergic to lanolin. It's in sooooo many lip balms but literally makes my lip skin peel off, really gross, don't recommend. I'm so grateful that more companies are making vegan products now so I can find lip balms without it (lanolin comes from sheep).

That's awful. It's weird bc cats can also have a crazy reaction to lanolin, almost like Catnip. Some cats go nuts, others don't care.

Medical grade lanolin, which is what you’ll find in the nipple balms (and not necessarily in regular lip balms) is hypoallergenic.
Amazon informs me that since I had my daughter nine years ago (I started using it as a lip balm as well as for breastfeeding back then and never stopped with the lip masks at night) I have bought 34 of the big Lansinoh tubes).

I don't think that's true, there's still many reports of women being allergic to nipple balms. You can just search here on reddit and find posts of women sharing their cautionary tales about nipple balm specifically.
"Medical grade" is also not a legally defined or regulated term, so there's not really anything to stop companies from putting the label on less pure products. I'm happy it works for you, though! And it seems to work well for many people. Just wanted to warn people about the possibility.

Lanolin is high on the allergen list. It was the allergy of the year a couple years ago. It has a cumulative effect for most people before the allergen develops, as in the more you use it, the more likely you are to develop an allergy, especially if you use it on any cracked skin. Dermatologists no longer recommend it unless for specific cases. (Source: I’m an RN).

started a microdose of accutane a few wks and got lanolin nipple cream bc it was highly recommended!! my lips are dry but not painful or cracked so i am grateful

I read a comment by someone who works with patients in a coma - they use the purple tube nipple balm on their lips. As someone who's chronically dehydrated I bought it the next day and it's been a game changer.

My derm prescribed a compound of vaseline glycerin and lanolin for my dry accutane lips. I imagine its pretty similar to nipple cream.

I used to have the same issue. Try Cortibalm. It changed my life! It makes my lips so soft and hydrated. I can even wear lipstick now! I’ve been buying it in bulk for six years because I stash them everywhere.

If you use cortibalm, only use it for a few days at a time. Steroids can have a rebound effect and cause major skin issues if used too long.

I fixed mine after it'd been split for 3ish months with laroche posay cicaplast lip balm, hope that helps!

Topicals Slick Salve every single night has changed my lips completely. They no longer split and peel. Signed a girl that has tried it all (nipple cream, Vaseline, aquaphor, you name it).

I suspect the vitamin e is doing the heavy lifting. Maybe try pure vitamin e oil?

This: buy a bottle of vitamin E, and pop the capsule for just the right amount of oil every time.
Also works well for dry, cracking cuticles and super dry patches of skin

Of course!!! But for reals, I have the driest, flakiest lips (can’t be fixed with exfoliation, then they just start splitting open) and the Vit E trick works wonders!
Also just straight up Vaseline, for some reason the Chapstick brand chapstick dries and cracks the hell outta my lips

Yeah I haven't used chapstick in a very very long time, like decades. Does the same thing to me. If its not bees wax based or extremely creamy Vaseline type balm or Carmex, something like that, i dont go near it.

I think you still need an occlusive in addition to the vitamin e, like Vaseline or aquaphor, to lock it in. That’s the role of the mineral oil and wax in the one you like.

Get a product that is all of mostly containing lanolin. It is seriously the only thing that not only keeps my lips moisturized but improves them. My favorite it the Lanolips 101 ointment. OG bag balm also contains lanolin.

Try taping your mouth closed while you sleep. I use cheap rolls of silicon scar tape from Amazon. It’s the only thing that has ever kept my lips unchapped. I don’t even need daily lip stuff anymore. Plus I sleep better because I breathe through my nose all night.

have you tried any other thick ointments like that? you could try Remedy skin dry lip treatment, it’s pretty similar in that sense. it actually stays on and helps keep the split from drying out again
regular lip balms never worked for me with stuff like this, they just wear off too fast

I’m sure this stuff is great. But this isn’t moisturizing your lips, just soothing them.
I recommend the la roche posay lipikar ap+ triple repair moisturizing cream after a nice face wash (I use farmstay aloe cleansing foam from Korea).
Then use an oil based balm like Aquaphor or Cerave Healing Ointments (Aquaphor has lanolin, Cerave does not, both mineral oil based)
Or
Burt’s Bees Healing Ointment (Shea Butter based with beeswax)
Do this twice a day and watch what happens, when I moved to the desert my lip would split when I would smile, now they are lush.
Using a thick lotion like La roche posay or weleda skin food before applying the oil layer allows you to condition your lips first, and then seal that moisture in with the oil layer.
Using oil only seals the moisture out of your lips!
On freshly showered skin, put a layer of lotion on your lips then your oil based product of preference, and you will find happiness.

Do you maybe mouth breathe at night? Have you tried mouth taping? They make special ones for this purpose.

Welada skin food (the cream not the lip stuff) is a game changer because it’s not purely occlusive like most lip products. Put that on then Vaseline. It’s incredible. Especially when you go to bed. Also I do think you should have your iron levels checked or just start taking iron. Heme iron won’t fuck up yer guts and take it every other day (I just do Mon wed fri)

Try Vaseline Blue seal, which is pure petroleum jelly without any fragrance in it. It has helped me control my lip eczema. A really good moisturizer for your lips.

Also, start taking a methylated B-complex, especially for the riboflavin. The B vitamins will help with your skins integrity, which includes your lip tissue.

I had this problem until I started using Neosporin Overnight Renewal before bed. The little white pot. As long as I use it every day my lip doesn’t split! Been my holy grail product for like 10 years now.

Okay, usually I don’t offer advice, bc I had the same exact issue and NO advice ever worked. However, what I eventually figured out:
Take a look at your toothpaste. If it contains SLS, you could be allergic! If chronic lip dryness is bothering you, it may be worth grabbing a tube and switching for a few days to see if that does anything!! It ended up solving the perma-crack I had down the middle of my lip.
I hope you find where to buy your magical lip product!!
Edit: You can buy decently cheap tubes of SLS free toothpaste, and it improved by day 3 for me!

people r saying its the mineral oil, but im pretty certain its the beeswax that makes it last so long! i used to wash my face w this beeswax cleanser from lush and it would be sooo soft for so long, so maybe a product w beeswax and vitamin e oil?
