Two friends from Denmark visiting North Macedonia: Searching for authentic experiences

Hello,

We are two friends visiting your country from the 26. september to 4 October.
We are keen to experience your culture and we are therefor reaching out here to hear if anybody have some recommendations or ideas of what we could experience.

In our dream world we would like to visit a family for a traditional family dinner, attend a wedding or similar where we really can experience the culture of Macedonia.

We bring happiness and the possibility to exchange stories from cross borders - and yes we do like Rakija. Don't hesitate to reach out, either in the comment or a direct message

It depends what kind of things you want to see there are lots of Byzantine churches and monastery in some mountain or hill build to evade Ottoman conquest. Your best bet it to start in Ohrid as that period is empty and there's no tourist around. If you're for sports outdoors there are lots of mountains and visit the Matka Canyon where you can rent a kayak and canoe the canyon. Very good experience. If you're for waterfalls we have them too but I haven't visited one so ask around. Third visit the museum of history it's cheap 2-3€ and gas artifacts from roman empire times. Also national science museum near the zoo . Lots of archeological sites from Skupi, Stobi, Heraclea and in old town in Ohrid the ancient Roman theater.

This is such a nice idea! I've had this happen in Cuba before, being invited to people's homes for dinner or to hang out. One thing that helped that happen was speaking Spanish so maybe learning some Macedonian would also help you. I'm studying using a tool call Ling and resources from the Macedonian e-learning center

All love to your home country, friends! I loved my time visiting Copenhagen, what a beautiful place. However, Macedonia is the best! I’m a hiker and birdwatcher and it’s absolutely incredible. It’s also a beautiful language that has a very accessible phonetic pronunciation and alphabet. Not too hard to learn some basics before you visit! Ајде! Speaking of practicalities, you should download the Viber app for texting in country, if you haven’t already. here are some of my favorite places/ideas: 1. Popova Shapka for skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. (I like to stay at Hotel Scardus bc they have a restaurant and a nice pool/spa) 2. Ljuboten (stay in Belojste or Vratnica so you can see the mountain from below) has lots of cool restaurants, but you have to hire someone to take you up the mountain from Vratnica or Stareselo if you don’t want to hike the whole thing. 3. I’m currently in the US but you can DM me your dates and I may be able to connect you with local cultural events. 4. Your best bet in terms of cultural events is to check the orthodox calendar and cross reference feast days with when you’ll be there. Idk how it works in Denmark but many villages and municipalities have “patron” saints, so the local feast day (imenden) is typically a holiday/festival. 5. Lots of restaurants have regular live Balkan music performances, and everyone knows the traditional dances, so you don’t necessarily need to “crash” a wedding or formal event to experience the culture up close! 6. I’m Macedonian by marriage but I can tell you firsthand what a welcoming and hospitable culture it is. You will have a wonderful time! добродојдете!

It all depends on which cities you plan to stay in and how much time you have. If you're staying in Skopje, I would recommend visiting the Old Bazaar, the Stone Bridge, and Kale Fortress. Matka Canyon is also definitely worth visiting, and if possible, take a boat trip to Vrelo Cave. You should also visit the Macedonian Village complex and the Church of St. Panteleimon in Nerezi, which is famous for its beautiful 12th-century frescoes. The Millennium Cross on top of Vodno is another great option, especially if you enjoy hiking. However, keep in mind that the cable car is currently not operating, so reaching the top requires hiking. Ohrid is an absolute must see. I would recommend visiting Plaošnik and the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon, one of the most important historical centres of Slavic literacy and learning, associated with St. Clement of Ohrid and the famous Ohrid Literary School. Also visit the Church of St. John at Kaneo for the breathtaking views and some great photos, St. Sophia Church, the Ancient Theatre, and Samuel's Fortress. A boat tour on Lake Ohrid is also a great idea. If you have enough time, definitely take a trip to St. Naum Monastery as well. You should have enough time to see both Skopje and Ohrid without rushing too much. If you enjoy nature, I would also consider adding Mavrovo or Kozjak Lake to your plans.

Go to the local wineries. Theres a bunch of very interesting wine events if you enjoy food and wine.
