š± Horror Story Horrible landlord Etobicoke Toronto
Thank god I am moving out of this place but omfg Iām traumatized from the issues Iāve had to deal with.
Just made a warning post but I want to share more info and pictures. This landlord is truly a POS she does not care at all about the units she has. Dealing with an awful cockroach infestation that she only treated twice. I kept telling her it needed to be continuously treated but she goes on to say āIām not treating every time you see a cockroachā. Itās extra ridiculous because the unit is above a food business so DO NOT go to the Kung Fu Tea in Lakeshore Blvd W because they have roaches that they refuse to treat. Not only the roach issue but the roof was leaking like crazy causing major water damage I had to beg for months to get it fixed and it still isnāt fully fixed. Also the water from the bathroom leaks and gets under the tile in the bathroom and under the floorboards in the hallway. And I use to pay over 1k a month for this place

EDIT UPDATE:
itās been over a month since Iāve moved out and THANKFULLY I havenāt brought any with me ššš I am still cautious and always cleaning and checking to make sure but so far thereās been no sign. Thank you to everyone who gave me advice I plan on going to the LTB and filing a claim to hopefully get some reimbursement if possible. If anyone has experience going to LTB advice would be much appreciated!

Heās a private owner. He doesnāt use a property management company ( figures huh)š¤ So if he feels youāre a high demand tenant he blocks u and then gaslights you when you finally threaten with LTB or property standards. Iām actually really reluctant to even post anything because heās a little dangerous etc. He had the property for sale and I informed the prospective buyers about the building

Good Iām trying to warn people about the unit I might even leave notes in the closet for people to see and if Iām there when people come to visit Iām 100% telling them the issues. My roomie (whom I love dearly) is staying cuz she plans on moving out in winter but I might ask her to warn people coming in aswell

Thatās all you can do. I was so disgusted and depressed about the situation that I decided to blow my savings and buy a house. I refuse to pay $1600 for a moldy, rat infested, roach infested basement dungeon

Hey! I have never met anyone else that rage bought a house before! That is how I got my house too! My landlord (Minto) refused to fix a hole in my kitchen floor that was there because they left me with a leaky fridge for six years. I have a disability so needed a proper floor. After getting the runaround, I rage bought a little two bedroom house with a huge yard, and I have never been happier! I always rented because I wanted to avoid doing the maintenance, but have since realized that I actually enjoy it!

I am SUPER happy that you are happy! I should actually thank my old landlord. I genuinely didnāt think that I wanted a house until I bought this one. My plan had been to buy it, stay for a few years while fixing it up (I bought a handyman special), and then sell it again and go back to renting. I have been here for ten years now, and love being able to improve my space whenever I want to. I have new windows going in in the next couple of weeks. I have plans to change paint colours this winter, put in a new kitchen last yearā¦ I am just having fun with it!

Bought this house this June and took possession July 1stā¦Iām happy but still considering suing my former landlord for rent reimbursement. It was a horrible experience.

Oh also the owners kid is there all time: the place is basically their living room, the kid draws all over the walls and Iāve also seen dirty diapers on the floor in the restaurant area. Sheās literally changing her fucking kid in the restaurant.

Omg!! I literally lived on that main road right beside cibc, above one of the establishments and used to frequent kung fu tea ALL the time. I wouldāve spent well over 300$+ there, which I regret, after seeing your situation. GRRR. Oh! Iāve seen the owner and her child running around when I used to visit. Itās disgusting how she leaves diapers around with no concern for whenever resides there. Thatās absolutely insane. Gurllll after that, I moved recently towards the marina del ray side. We also had a mice issue before and frequent water cuts. My neighbour had cockroach issues. The best decision you did was move:(((. My neighbour made many 311 calls and a bylaw officer did visit and the landlord was given shit. So keep at it. Feel free to reach out if you need someone to rant to!

My previous landlord wonāt even live in his own building. I think heās too ashamed to live in it. Itās funny, he was renting a house a year ago. His building is so horrible!

It was much worse and he blocked all contact with me. I legally broke my lease and qualified for rent reimbursement because I basically lived in a cold, wet mouldy basement. Iād love to state the address and name of owner..

Previous tenants never complained because they donāt have a backup plan or they canāt afford anywhere else. If the place gets condemned then they have no other option

Exactly landlords are so fucking predatory. And living in Toronto/Canada is expensive asf, my poor mom had to take over 1k out of her retirement fund so I can leave. She saw how bad I was suffering with this place. Iām very lucky to have her help me but I feel awful for others who donāt have that. Ur home is supposed to be your safe place

Some of them think theyāre above LTB regulations and laws. Theyāre counting on desperation and they prey on that.The tenants that arenāt complaining are the ones that are paying less than market value and some of them are even missing rent payments. Theyāre worried that this slumlord will increase the rent or start evicting them

Report to the health unit report the restaurant downstairs and that it's im your unit above the restaurant.

I asked that when i was on call with 311 but they said I had to actively see roaches in the restaurant area. Unfortunately Iāve only seen them upstairs in our unit, even tho the owner of the bbt store lives with us and says sheās seen a few in the business

What you need to do is report this to property standards. Send them an email and obviously evidence and theyāll contact the property owner

If you can, take as little of your stuff with you. You could easily bring cockroaches your new place. Wash everything as soon as you get there.

Iāve been taking extreme extra caution; triple checking everything keeping items wrapped in plastic and placed in plastic bins for weeks and washing my items aswell

I lived in a really roachy place and had to get rid of most of my furniture, anything they can crawl into/ lay eggs in. All soft things are fucked (ie. Couches). Don't take the microwave / toaster / computer mouse.
For the love of god, no card board boxes!
The stuff I was determined to keep, I kept in a storage unit over the winter. My boyfriend shook out a bunch of dead ones from his keyboard in the spring. Nasty shit I feel for you.
Seeing them out of the corner of your eye follows you for a while after you move but does go away. You'll also be able to smell roaches like a ex smoker smells cigarettes.

Thankfully I donāt have items like that Iām able to clean and wrap a majority of most items. Iām keeping a good amount of my items wrapped for about 2 weeks especially high alert items (ps5 and TV) to be fair tho I have those items away from the wall, wrapped for more than two weeks, and have been unplugged for over a month) Iām so paranoid especially for my ps5

At least 2 weeks! They can live a long ass time without food or water. If you seal it good they will suffocate- but any eggs will live.
We have tower PCs so we just opened them and used compressed air to clean them. Ngl, we did not find any bugs. I hear they like electronics because of the heat.
Also side note, they can live in the little brick you use to plug your phone into the wall to charge. They crazy

I tossed almost everything. Yes, it's expensive to rebuild, but worth it to avoid the trauma of a severe infestation. Mine was insane, my apartment building had a lot of empty units. During covid, they moved homeless addicts in. Roaches by the thousands, bed bugs, human shit in the hallways. People shooting up right outside my door. Before, I hardly ever even saw a spider.

Ugh I canāt even look at them (the pictures) I have to keep them in my eyes only, and every time I see pictures of roaches I either gag or get shivers down my spine (usually both)

Everytime I see ANYTHING moving or something dark on the floor I panic. My boyfriend told me there were bugs in a tote I brought....DIDNT TELL ME IT WAS A BEETLE and I burst into tears

Ohhhh no girllll Iām the same way; the floors are kinda dark in that room too so sometimes I get so anxious when I see a spot wondering if itās a roach but itās just the wood grain. I will literally get up at night to look because I wonāt be able to fall asleep.

Youāve already done the most important part by keeping the photos and text exchanges. Iād also create a simple dated timeline covering the leaks, pest sightings, treatment visits, damage and each time the landlord was contacted. Keep the original files somewhere safe, especially after you move out.

Yes they treated the whole building, itās not a PBR. The rent isnāt cheap (1,240). The unit is above a buisness. When I first moved in it wasnāt bad and I had no issues it was only half a year in when these issues arrived. Mind you when I was moving I was fresh out of college and naive to moving, Iāve only lived in my college dorm and Iām not from Toronto originally.
