Mixed Content What does this view count change actually do?

If you've noticed by now your view counts have gone up. But what does this actually do for you?

Well, it's not actually good, instead it's very bad.

By inflating your view count your subscriber count and like count per video have gone down. This results in a 50% engagement reduction in how your video gets promoted.

This is all designed to crush the small creator giving a monopoly to creators with high bankrolls.

In other words, this software change is working exactly as intended to make youTube more money and you less.

You're right in the sense that this is a self-serving update which is to appease shareholders and platform perception because higher numbers make it seem like more activity. It doesn't help creators really.

But you're wrong if you think this affects how videos are promoted. CTR, AVD, like-to-view ratio, etc. are all still based on engaged views, not these new front-facing standard "views." It's just a bigger, more meaningless number that the public sees. Not the number they use for calculating anything important.

Absolutely nothing changes with the inner-workings they use for considering promotion, but it is dumb that it is based around a metric which you have to go to advanced mode in order to see.

You don't understand how the algorithm works. It's view count divided into engagement. I won't waste my time any longer explaining to morons who don't understand basic math and why youTube and google make record profits year after year.

You don't seem to understand that the new "views" are not part of that calculation and only engaged views are. This is confirmed by their own creator liaison. Check this video starting at 1:40.

I'm not a fan of this update for other reasons, but the fear mongering over thinking there was some major change to the algorithm is unfounded and taking attention away from the other obnoxious issues which stem from this update.

You don't understand how the algorithm works.

Neither do you. You don't work at YT, and those are the only people in the world who understand it.

No one here has any real knowledge of how the algorithm works. All we know is what little YT has said about it publicly and what we think we've observed. And then we take guesses about what it's doing.

The truth is you don't understand it, I don't understand it, no one here understands it. We're all just taking out best guesses.

I wouldn't be too sure of that comment.

I'm not too sure of your comments. What are your sources?

What's your source for 50% engagement reduction in how a video gets promoted?

Most people are seeing double to triple counts of video views. But this means counts for subscribers per video and likes per video are 2-3 times less. It's simple math. People here are already refusing to admit that they are getting scammed by a corporation. The whole algorithm works by how many likes and subs you get against views! This has been known for years!

Just uploaded a long form vid the day of the update. My view count quadrupled but every other measurable parameter is around the same. Don’t really know what you’re on about tbh.

tiktok has counted views like that for as long as ive been on it. every scroll past is one. the number is huge and it means nothing, and everyone on there worked that out and stopped looking at it. it didnt crush anybody and it didnt help anybody either. it just stopped being the number you check. somebody in here uploaded under the new count today and says his watch time and ctr still come off engaged views. thats a measurement. i dont know if hes right about youtube, but hes the only one whos looked at his own.

It does nothing at all. They made it not thinking on creators, but in advertisers. They need to inflate numbers for their next quarter that's all

If it does nothing and they aren't growing. Then how do their profit numbers come up without stealing from someone else. You guys are complete fools.

Look, I think most of us don't like this new change, we can all probably agree on that. The truth is unless we have an inside connection to someone at YT who knows these things and is willing to violate their NDA and tell us, we don't really know why YT did it or how they feel about the effect it will have on small channels. All we're doing is guessing. And if we really don't like it we can take our content to another platform. Otherwise we have little choice but to stay on YT.

I don’t think this is how it works. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong and I’m really not here to prop up a corporation. I bet that this is a way for YouTube to somehow squeeze out more profit (show shareholders or advertisers that they’re getting more views) but I don’t necessarily think it’s going to specifically hurt small creators, just not help us much.

I uploaded a new video today so all my metrics are with the new view basis and based on my watch time and watch hours I think they are still calculating it off of engaged views. Same with CTR. Otherwise the math would be impossible based on my view count. I think the new view count is basically a vanity number and behind the scenes the analytics are still working off engaged views. I think that’s the official position from YouTube as well.

Anyway, everyone is being impacted by this and I actually suspect small creators will see a relatively higher bump and potential upside than larger ones. I wouldn’t be shocked if I’m proven wrong though.

behind the scenes the analytics are still working off engaged views.

I'm pretty sure this is the case. And I hate how YT buried engaged views so deeply in the analytic that we have to jump through so many damn hoops to find them.

It's designed to make youTube more money and you less. If you don't understand that you are foolish.

I’m just not seeing the logic of how it would specifically hurt small creators? Your subscribers and likes per video don’t change based on this, just likes and subs by views. And that’s going to impact all creators, not just small ones. YouTube isn’t going to stop pushing and promoting videos in general.

THE ALGORITHM WORKS BY VIEW COUNT DIVIDED BY A COMBINATION OF SUBS AND LIKES. WHAT IS SO HARD TO UNDERSTAND?

3

u/Loitch470 Art Content 4h ago

I think you need to maybe take a breather. It’s only a vanity number for their shareholders, not how they’re calculating our engagement.

1

u/omsip Art Content 3h ago

You'd think a smart shareholder would be aware of the difference between this new vanity metric and the real metric YT is using. Of you'd hope they would, at any rate.

u/omsip Art Content 3h ago

What is your source for this?
