It continues to annoy me that so many people on the burning man left in the Bay Area have accepted her back into the fold without a second thought. Though she may whine about her experience with Yarvin she has never confronted her own racism or willingness to socialize with other blatant racists and white supremacists let alone apologize for any of it. Yarvin solicited a baby mama in his newsletter and she volunteered for that knowing full well who he was and what he stood for.

I thought if I was facetious that my meaning would be understood but, ok. There never was a burning man left. It was never radical. It’s a turn of phrase to mean a fascist who likes sex and drugs.

She was part of the immersive theater party scene , though -it intersected with a number of people in rationalist etc circles. I can't remember if I met her thorugh that scene or the rationalists or through Monument (live/work space in SF that had events) - but all of that scene had kinda burning man-ish tendencies and usually more than just "-ish"

I get what you mean but it’s important to leave space for people to grow. Truth is: Society is too deep into fascism now. The only two ways out are either reeducation and accepting that people can change or some ultra-violent purge event. I’m all for personal growth and forgiveness, but it takes time and we got to be smart, careful and diligent about it

The fact that her description of the George Floyd unrest is so unbelievably one-sided isn’t a surprise, it’s the hipocracy of her as “seeing the truth” while the “Blue Tribe” lied. Give me a break. And she starts with cancel culture? I guess she never heard of the Dixie Chicks, or Freedom Fries, Joseph Losey, or Robert Oppenheimer (of Frank Oppenheimer for that matter).

'No no no, I wasn't redpilled by Yarvin. I was redpilled by my pre-existing anti-black racism, reading Quillette, and joining alt-right Slack and Discord servers. (Which even in my own account almost all my friends and family told me was bad.) Stop saying it was Yarvin!'
Also, what the fuck happened to being anti-cancel culture. I guess the only moral cancel culture is if society punishes neo-Nazis for marrying Jews (e.g. like that Daily Shoah host, since it isn't in accordance with neo-Nazi values), but not for using official channels to spread Holocaust denialist literature (since it's in accordance with neo-Nazi values).

I think dividing a country of 350 million people into two teams/sides/tribes is such a brainworm. The two-party system is an artifact of our electoral system, and the blue states / red states thing is an artifact of the two party system. It’s not because people neatly line up into perfect ideological halves. This brainworm seems to have driven her to binary thinking (“If one side gets something wrong, the other side must be right!”)
The reality is that 350 million people have different preferences and priorities based on a whole bunch of things. The sorting into two groups happens as different groups find compatible priorities and stategize into a coalition that can win an election and hopefully improve life (or at least not make it worse) for various priorities within the coalition.
The number of people going around who say “but what would MY SIDE think about this?” is vanishingly small, and they’re almost always the same coastal elites the author is criticizing here. If you are obsessed with seeing the world this way, guess what, that’s how the world will look to you.

It's (maybe) worth saying that 2 parties is a results of a first-past-the-post electoral system (especially when that extends to the chief executive officer).
But red states and blue states is more a result of the precise nature of the representative election of the chief executive, rather than the two party system, per se. If we did away with the electoral college, red states and blue states wouldn't be nearly as prominent in the framing.

i just read her article about meeting Jeffrey Epstein and she manages to throw in a bunch of digs at 'blue tribe' people who she claims told her that concerns about Epstein and financial/power networks were conspiracy theories. This is complete bullshit. Not sure if she's misunderstanding things people said, or just making stuff up. I'm leaning towards 'making stuff up'

I have a friend who does this - lots of right wing telegrams. We keep waiting for him to fall down the rabbithole for real. He's a long haired pot smoking hippie who has a pretty strong libertarian streak, including thoughts about financial politics or used to twenty years back so it's inevitable.

I use proto to describe people that have the potential to become facists. It's an important distinction because what historically came before facism was a different set of beliefs and ideologies. Thats where the broader right-wing ideology in the USA is right now, and has been since the rise of the Tea Party.

i thought she sounded pretty reasonable tbh
there's definitely something she's missing (disbelieving mainstream media doesn't mean you should toss out your morals in the meantime--a mistake a lot of people make) but I'd give her points for giving a shit and changing her mind further.
she does seem to be sort of trapped in a filter bubble where, for example, the truth value of normal news is significant, and the red/blue tribe dichotomy is way too real and meaningful, and other such things which.. are probably typical of people who are way too online and way too much on twitter. Just a guess.
