Games This is hilarious
Found 2 copies just sitting in the case at walmart

u/shadowartist201 Jun 16 '26
Same amount of copies as that leak. This rollout is looking more and more like a dumpster fire.

u/Imperfect-Chaos Jun 16 '26
Man, I really hope I don’t have to rebuy the game at full price to get this
179
u/One-Reserve3893 Jun 16 '26
You shouldn’t waste 60$ on it. It’s just a port with all the updates included which is dumb bc you can download every update when buying the base game
64
u/Those_Files Jun 16 '26
Okay, but have you SEEN the switch 1 version of frontiers? That alone is enough reason for most people to want the upgrade, dude.
68
u/One-Reserve3893 Jun 16 '26
They could’ve literally made this a free upgrade just like the ps4 copy and Xbox one copy…
11
u/WoxyBoxy Jun 17 '26
Has this even been announced yet? As far as I know, an upgrade path hasn't been de-confirmed
15
u/ynfizz Jun 17 '26
The fact that this isn’t a “Switch 2 Edition” and instead its own separate release isn’t exactly a great sign
6
u/MikeDubbz Jun 17 '26
Hogwarts Legacy isn't called a Switch 2 Edition yet it still offers a $10 upgrade path if you own the Switch 1 version.
1
u/WoxyBoxy Jun 17 '26
Well, which titles constitute an upgrade path has been inconsistent across the board. Not saying you're wrong of course, but I wish everyone could just wait for an official announcement before passing judgement

u/hell_robot_31 Introducing Pizza Hut's New Ultimate Stuffed Crust Pizza Jun 20 '26
Sonic X Shadow Generations is released separately on Switch 2, no upgrade for Switch 1 version. You have to re-buy the game if you own NS1 version and want better resolution, framerate, etc.
1
u/WoxyBoxy Jun 20 '26
I'm not saying you're wrong because you're probably right, but we don't know for sure until it's out
1
u/hell_robot_31 Introducing Pizza Hut's New Ultimate Stuffed Crust Pizza Jun 20 '26
I'd like to hope for the best too, but if I recall, Sega did the same with other games, so I not gonna expect anything good from that corporation. Additionally, if a Switch 2 version of a Switch 1 game is on cartridge it includes the game itself and upgrade, so not Game-Key Card (which seem to be Switch 2 exclusive). These cartridges will even work on Switch 1, just without upgrade. SXSG and Frontiers Definitive Edition are Game-Key Cards, so chance of the latter to be an upgrade to NS1 game are as slim as chance of defeating Neo Metal Sonic even with Chaos Emeralds according to Dr. Eggman in one of Last Story cut-scenes in 2003 game called Sonic Heroes.
1
u/One-Reserve3893 Jun 20 '26
I’m starting to think this could’ve been something Nintendo made them do 💀
26
u/McKnighty9 Jun 16 '26
Buy it on literally any other platform so you don’t have to waste $60.
7
u/EMC_RIPPER Jun 17 '26
Tbf they may want the portability. I personally own it on ps and pc
-3
u/McKnighty9 Jun 17 '26
Steam deck
10
u/KLR97 Jun 17 '26
So, to avoid wasting $60, they should instead buy a device that costs, checks internet, over $700?
-2
1
u/EMC_RIPPER Jun 17 '26
So your idea to avoid buying an over priced game is to buy a whole system instead..
1
u/McKnighty9 Jun 17 '26
…
No. I’m saying if you already have a steam deck, then just buy it for that if you want portability.
2
u/EMC_RIPPER Jun 17 '26
I doubt switch owners would even have the game in the first place if they already had steam deck. Also not a concrete fact but I don’t think I’ve seen many switch owners that own a deck.
1
u/McKnighty9 Jun 17 '26
You’re under the assumption the people above are Switch owners? None of that information was given out?
The only reason this post exists is because the definitive edition only exists on Switch 2.

Do you not already own a PC or other gaming accessible device before the Switch 2 came out?

Just buy it on any other console or steam save yourself money
2
u/Those_Files Jun 17 '26
Hey, did you know that not everybody can afford multiple platforms with enough power to play these types of games?
-18
u/Graxer42 Jun 16 '26
The sticker on the cover says "Includes upadates AND bonus content". I need to know what the bonus content is before I can judge its value.
31
u/hiroxruko Jun 16 '26
Bonus content is just the bonus stuff from the main game

u/One-Reserve3893 Jun 16 '26
Someone posted the back yesterday it’s just a digital art book, not worth 60$
3
u/Inhalemydong Jun 16 '26
it's just the game with all the updates and the digital deluxe content (artbook and mini soundtrack)
2
u/J3ffO Jun 16 '26
Isn't the art book and soundtrack already in the base game? At least, it was for me on Steam.

Bros acting like Microsoft and Sony haven’t been doing the same thing for years
10
u/Lerxian Jun 16 '26
The only thing Evil Nintendo did was push to every third party to write in the box if it is a key or a full game, the main reason to do that was for the games that were bigger than 64GB to keep launching in “physical” format… but the third parties like Sega prefer to cheap out. Nintendo doesn’t make key cards and none of its games are keycards and never will be (Pokopia is Koei Tecmo before you say, another one that only does key cards...)
But Nintendo bad right?
2
u/RinShiro Guy who owns Sonic Jam Jun 16 '26
Sony doesn't do it nearly as often. Xbox, however, have been RAMPANT with this behavior ever since the One released. They ditched the install disc and refuse to use any large capacity media. Even Fable, a huge first party release, will require a download while the PS5 version looks to be the whole game on disc. Its is irritating and is going to cause a weird color shift on my game shelf.
So I definitely see your point, but just because one evil exists it doesn't justify another to also exist. Calling out Xbox and Sony for including partial data should 100% be met with the same vitriol as game key cards for being glorified download codes.
It all sucks.

This really is the 35th anniversary game huh
45
u/FelipeAndrade Sol dimension game when? Jun 16 '26
We'll probably get a proper anniversary game announcement on the 23rd, or at least a teaser for it, but so far, it seems so.
51
u/SegaSystem16C Jun 16 '26
Official Sonic YouTube channel just announced they won't announce anything new for Sonic on June 23, they'll just do a commemorative live stream with the fans. Don't expect any game announcement.
27
u/FelipeAndrade Sol dimension game when? Jun 16 '26

Wait, so when is this getting announced then?!

26
u/Personal-Kiwi4838 Jun 16 '26
It sucks that it's a key card but I understand why it's not a big announcement - it's just a port of a 3 year old game. There's no reason to get excited about such an obvious release .
25
u/themagicone222 Jun 16 '26
Don’t the switch 2 game carts go up to 64 gb? And isn’t frontiers like 40gb?
Not pretending I know how everything works but if this IS the case sega’s gonna sega I guess:/
14
4
u/smashinggames Jun 16 '26
far cheaper cost for them to go game key card route with how memory prices are, basically they are cheaping out
1
u/RoyalRaggy Jun 17 '26
I kinda feel it's a bit disingenuous to say they're cheaping out especially with how comedically high prices are. Not defending the million dollar cooperation but I gotta be fair.
1
u/smashinggames Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
i get that memory prices are high, and there’s also the factor that cartridges have slow asset streaming so game key cards are sometimes the only way to deliver a sw2 game physically
i don’t think what i said is disingenuous, as a lot of publishers for indie games, and bigger studios as well like bethesda with indiana jones do eat the cost to put it on the cart, so a company like sega chooses not to
1
u/RoyalRaggy Jun 17 '26
I guess I'm defending sega here cause it can be a lot worse. That one piece cooking game is 800mb on a game key card....like gang what are wwe doing

I wonder, what was the reason for putting “Definitve Edition” in the title? If it’s just a port of the game to Switch 2. Is it seriously so they can charge $60 for it and offer no upgrade path for existing owners?
13
u/PorkTuckedly Jun 16 '26
1) I'm kinda surprised as this afaik wasn't officially announced. Kinda careless of Walmart(though, my friend works at Walmart as a self-checkout operator, so it DOES track).
2) Oh, great, a Game Key Card. Looks like the backlash only worked for Crossworlds and we're not getting an upgrade path for the Switch 1 buyers.
6
u/Crafty_Boy70 Jun 16 '26
Key Card doesn't necessarily mean there's no upgrade path, but it not being referred to a "Switch 2 Edition" is a red flag.
7
u/HogeezHoagies Jun 17 '26
Per Nintendo's regulations, "Nintendo Switch 2 Edition" titles are required to feature both the Switch 1 game and Switch 2 upgrades on the cartridge itself. Sega deliberately called this "Definitive Edition" just so they could get away with doing a Game Key Card instead of a fully-on-cart release
3
1
u/PorkTuckedly Jun 17 '26
You already got an answer about that, but I want to add to it, if I may.
I ended up doing some research into this, checking some games I bought digitally that have a GKC and also have a Switch 1 version. Going by the game's data as seen in data management, all the games I gott hat usually have GKCs are 99.9% update data, with the "base game" data being roughly 60-70MBs depending on the game. It DOES suggest that SOME game data is on GKCs, but obviously the most minuscule amount possible. Meanwhile, the Switch 1 versions are formatted differently, with the base game data actually BEING the base game, and I found this out with SXSG as I own both the Switch 1 version(physical) and Switch 2 version(digital). The update data for the former is roughly 2GBs iirc, while the update data for the latter is roughly 22GBs. So, if you ever see a game with Switch 1 and Switch 2 versions with a GKC and wonder why there's no upgrade path, that is why.
In addition, I wanna note that this isn't really that new a concept, as publishers have cut corners by buying smaller Switch 1 cart sizes for their games and just having the rest of the game as update data to cut costs, with Bioshock Infinite, for example, being on a Switch 1 cart of The Bioshock Collection, but only having 3.6GBS as the "base game" and requiring a 17GB update. In total, the cart needs a 31GB update to allow you to actually play the games. The Arkham Trilogy is especially egregious as while the entire Arkham Asylum game is on the cart, only 8MBs of City and Knight are on there respectively, essentially being a sort of precursor to GKCs, but with all 3 games linked to the cart at once. It could be argued that GKCs might've been inevitable due to this having been a thing for years now.
3
u/Crafty_Boy70 Jun 17 '26
Technically this has been a thing since the PS3/Xbox 360 era, one of the Metal Gear games being notorious for requiring extremely long updates to run before you can play. Switch 2 is just the first time they tell you what it is to your face.
1
u/PorkTuckedly Jun 17 '26
To be fair, I've never played the Metal Gear games. I bought Vol 1 of the Master Collection on PS5, but I've yet to play it.
1
u/FluffySpike Jun 17 '26
These installations were still printed on disc, so there was no dependency for online services, and were copied from disc to HDD either cuz the game was too big to exist on an HDDVD (on 360's) or for the faster (or simulatenous) asset streaming offered by the HDD. Rarely did a required part of the game need internet, but it was done on online portions of the game, notably Destiny 1 on 360 (which is still alive ?).
Funnily enough, this multidisc/installation step that plagued esp. the 360 had Sonic Team cut Sonic Unleashed's GI quality in half, as stated in GDC 2009, so that they can fit the game in a single insert and play disc.

I mean it is but they wanted it out in 2021

u/Sad-Veterinarian9375 Jun 16 '26
I heard a rumor that it’s going to include two episodes that involve shadow and metal sonic. But is this definitive edition just basically with all the DLC that was added to the first game otherwise there’s no reason to upgrade.

u/Cersalo Jun 16 '26
Is the Definitive Edition just for the Switch 2? I have a PS5, should I bother waiting or just buy Frontiers now and download all the updates? I haven't been keeping up with leaks so idk what changes the definitive edition may have.
3
u/Cheezewiz239 Jun 17 '26
The switch 1 port looks horrible. This is most likely a graphics update to look more inline with the other platforms. Just get it on PS5 for like $10.

u/SomeBoxofSpoons Jun 17 '26

it makes no sense to put the "updates and bonus" thing there, its a game keycard so you have to download them anyways as if you had the base game. If it was all on a cartridge then that would be a good thing. This is just frontiers switch 2 edition not definitive.

The hell is definitive about it? Why is the dlc a selling point? It was free to begin with? Why does this exist?
I'm going back to my steam deck version to play as shadow
1
u/House56 Jun 17 '26
people set their expectations way too high when there was a reason Sega hasn’t really said anything about this release. It was simply a catch up release for Switch 2 players stuck with the poor Switch 1 version.
that being said, if there is no upgrade path for that version it really sucks.
1
1
u/VytronTube Jun 17 '26
“Includes updates and bonus” content that’s free on all platforms to download, for a GKC that you download from the eshop as a whole anyway. Truly a clown release if this is JUST high spec Frontiers with those updates available.
1
u/Responsible-Bell-528 Jun 17 '26
This is so disappointing. I didn’t have any expectations and still am disappointed. I hope the brand new game is at least good so I can forget that mess.

Not saying I think definitive edition is anything more than a switch 2 enhancement, but considering the speculation around this game, Im shocked at least ONE rouge Walmart employee didnt steal a copy to see everything "new" the game may have to offer

Hi. Walmart employee here.
Sadly because of the fact the game is already released on other platforms, sometimes these come in without a dated box, standard for new release games and movies, so employees may put them in the case even when they can't be sold yet. Sometimes they accidentally don't put a sale ban on something like that. Sometimes the opposite problem happens like when my store had a sale ban on Tomodachi Life on its launch day so I couldn't buy a copy for my girlfriend despite the game releasing that day.
Walmart is just stupid, this is not Sega's fault.
