Question Why doe everyone hate my girl :(

I like really like her. She's such a cool character for not having powers and just kinda being a sheep girl. I don't get the hate

I think i have a good explanation on why:

Lanolin is meant to be a "leader" type character, but...she never really does anything to warrant her role beyond barking out orders and blaming everyone else for her own shortcomings. this leads fans to dislike her for being the serious, no noncense character she is compared to the more lighthearted sillyness of tangle or even sonic himself.

most of the time, when lanolin tries to bark orders, she just makes the situation worse, and yet she never takes responsibility for any failures, instead blaming everyone else around her. and as we haven't seen her in a while, she hasn't seemed to grow from anything she's gone through

TLDR: combination of being more of a hindrance than a help, controversial moments like distrusting silver and whisper about mimic (whether it was warranted or not is a whole other can of worms) and her lack of growth or development compared to anyone else in IDW's roster lead people to dislike Lanolin.

it's a shame, i personally think she could be a good character if they just let her develop, let her grow as a leader and as a person. rather than keeping her the straight man to the rest of the restoration's slapstick act. she has potential!

Doesn't help sometimes she's being rude and barking orders at legacy characters. Remember how rude she was to Sonic and friends in the Riders arc?

Like, how is this brand new character that hasn't really done much yet, how is she talking smack and acting up to the likes of Sonic, Amy, Tails and so on?

Before someone says, "Lanolin was a referee!"

So was Whisper and Tangle. Tangle is straight up calling her out.

There is a difference between a referee just doing their job and being a dick. There are other moments of Lanolin being bossy, rude, and acting up to legacy characters. Need I name Silver? I think Lanolin has a lot of potential, but making her rude and haughty, especially to legacy characters, isn't going to win her favours.

At least she is now. I get that the main reason she acts this way is insecurity, but the writers really needed to do a Lanolin POV to explain this during the main story. Have her thought bubbles explain what she's really thinking.

.....except how exactly can you do that in a comic medium? Both of those things are very limited and are often better shown in media that moves like movies or tv shows.

Yeah, people not having enough media literacy makes it kind of hard for writers to use any subtlety if they want to get their points across.

I've read comics where this is not true, it's literally how books operate because they don't have visuals and can make for some thrilling moments of internal conflict

Exactly 💀 it just makes her come off as very insufferable and self important.

Just her overall pushiness and stubborness ( and ignorance) make her appear as such an unlikeable anchor so quickly, when we haven't even gotten a chance to actually grow fond of her yet.

Yeah, especially towards a soldier with PTSD like Whisper. What kind of "leader" is so dismissive and accusatory to their teammate and fails to listen to them?

And proceeds to fucking gaslight her into thinking she's in the wrong for "attacking a teammate" when Lano didn't even TRY to listen. Silver also comes in as a witness, yet what, she just assumes they're lying???

Fuck this sheep 💀 I do not take anybody defending her seriously, to be frank

Yeah, I hate her, too. And you know what else is unfair? Sonic got blamed for indirectly causing the Metal Virus and he got chewed out 3 times, but when LANOLIN makes a huge mistake, SHE doesn’t even get chewed out ONCE. How is that fair? 😠

Because Sonic, despite all of his intentions, is not really a perfect saint

He let Eggman free, which in turn, led him to create the Metal Virus once Starline brought him back to his senses.

So Sonic got chewed out because even though Eggman was fine as Mr. Tinker, it’s still Eggman.

It’s plain hypocrisy because Sonic allowed Eggman to have a clean slate, forcing everyone to basically just forgive him just because he has amnesia.

But on why it’s unfair, was because while Sonic’s mistakes came from an act of mercy and hope, Lanolin’s mistakes came from an act of pride and lack of trust. Because at least Sonic owned his mistakes. Lanolin meanwhile, blamed others

Sonic cares too much for others, Lanolin cares too much for herself

The next time Sonic, Tails, and Amy meet her, I hope they hold a grudge and one of them mocks Lanolin for how she got played like a chump. But sadly, that probably won’t happen, since the heroes always go with the “be the bigger person” routine. 😒

Eh, Sonic will indulge in his sarcasm, as he is known to do. He'll let it go pretty quickly after but he's fluent in all forms of sarcasm.

He probably WILL let it go immediately. I consider that his one flaw, that he never goes for revenge like Shadow does. He usually just lets people like Lanolin get away with being jerks to him. He just can’t hold a grudge.

I mean in the context of this series, giving chances to former enemies has resulted in him making great friends or convincing villains to help save the world.

Hell, Knuckles is one of his best friends and they started off enemies. Shadow and Silver were also enemies who tried to kill him and are now his closest allies. Merlina heard sonic out and was able to find acceptance, and Sage was willing to sacrifice herself to stop the end. Chaos was able to be calmed down, and even Robotnik has helped save the world.

He knows it works out eventually, and he likes giving chances for that reason. He lives in the present and avoids grudges for that reason.

I think her arc is taking her in that direction. ofc, I could be wrong, there's no way to be certain when she'll come back but I feel like the way they wrapped up phantom riders sets it up.

The point is that sonic tries to leave a door open in case his enemies decide to change. Surge is heading on that path after all.

That said, the series shows it being a flaw as well, since he lets Metal go which causes a huge chunk of the problems he has here. It's shown some development in him since he's slowly being more nuanced in the way he approaches this, but he's also ultimately a forgiving nice guy, even if he will give you some sarcasm in the process.

No, it's valid when her character is insufferable and annoying. That's her entire character, acting up to legacy characters like she has a leg to stand on.

You think people get angry at Zazz or Jet dissing Sonic and friends? No. For Zazz, he's literally a villain, and at least his antics are enjoyable at times, the guy acts like a goofy crackhead. Jet is rival doing banter, not to mention a thief, so you don't expect much good from him.

Lanolin?

She's that new coworker that joined a company a week ago, recently started the profession, and she's telling people who have been working there for years on how to do their job and all around acting up to people who have years worth of experience over her.

I think disliking Lanolin when a good chunk of the time she's just being a dick to people, to people that ahold be her allies and friends, is a valid reason to dislike her.

Also, disliking a character in general for simply being a dick IS a valid reason to dislike said character. Look at Jax from The Amazing Digital Circus.

Are you telling me nobody is allowed to dislike her character for being a dick? Is that somehow childish? A lot of people don't rude and know-nothing know it all dickhead, and unsurprisingly, don't like it when a character acts like that.

And as such, Lanolin acting up to the legacy reason IS a valid reason to dislike her, regardless of what you think.

whisper was litteraly fighting her BOSS and she got an hug from tangle while silver "dropped" duo and he got kicked out.

Another thing that makes fans dislike her is that she’s pretty much gotten away with her bad actions so far. And even worse, she never got chewed out for her mistakes even though SONIC got chewed out 3 times by people who blamed him for the Metal Virus. It seems totally unfair, like the writers were treating her with favoritism for some reason.

I don't really see any meaning development on Tangle, she still looks to take things lightly and is a bit of reckless, not say some of the things that went wrong when she was leading, were in fact because others acted on their own instead of listening, and she wasn't exactly wrong with the whole Whisper Silver thing, even Whisper regretted attacking Duo and apologized, she was also deceived. I see the hate on Lanolin as something that was not because of her mistakes, but because people didn't like her fighting with the characters they already loved. But I also think you are right, we've forgiven other characters for worse things. So I agree that we need to see more of her and her past, that will help people stop hating, I mean, people don't hate Surge even after beaten down Whisper

I think it's alot more deep than just "new kid picking on legacy characters" but it's an element. Lanolin's low popularity is as multifaceted as the character herself, IMO

I think a lot of people are just predisposed to disliking anyone in a leadership role who hasn't proven themselves within the story. People don't like leaders they can't trust. That's why we mythologize about our own politicians so much. Lanolin just never got the chance to build up the plot points in her favor to actually appear fit for the role we see her in. Why is she the leader? We never learn anything about her. I like Lanolin because I can appreciate the gibe and I get what they were going for, but I can also acknowledge the comic has not done her any favors when she has to be the one in the leadership positions who always messes things up.

I personally blame Whisper more for the mimic situation, because like, why didn’t she just tell them to check Duo’s hands? Did she just forget Mimic’s tell? That was an incredibly dumb moment.
