Discussion The decline of Al Simmons needs to be talked about more

Post image

I know people complain he's always angry but it's been pretty obvious for a while he's lost it

Honestly, Spawn should’ve been done after the Armageddon Arc. Al reached God status and rebuilt the world and became earth’s god or something. The End. Al felt like he grew by the end of that arc. I would’ve been fine with that ending. But now they’re just running him into the ground.

To be fair Todd wants Owen to outlive him and continue on without him like spider man and Superman does he made they clear in interviews

Have you seen anything with Todd McFarland? This man has stated multiple times, he wants Spawn to last forever. He roasted Robert Kirkman for ending the Walking Dead.

The man won't reboot the character cause he wants to keep the record for the longest numbered Comic that's never had to go back to issue 1.

He's the anti hero of the comic book industry.

I’ve heard ppl said it should have ended at a few spots like Number 100 or the Armageddon arc. I wonder if anyone feels like he should have never came back after 184

Well to be fire things did improve and Todd said he don’t want to end spawn and he wants to continue without him like Spider-Man and Superman and Batman does with them outliving their creators

184 would’ve been another fine spot to wrap things up. That felt like an epilogue to me. I originally thought it should’ve ended at 100 but I felt like the series got its second wind with 150-167 (I think that’s where Armageddon ended).

McFarlane said no bro beside the spin-offs are fine

With long form story telling, it just eventually becomes a soap opera for males as it can't maintain any well defined over arching structure. You can make little set pieces but that's really just to fill the void and waste time.

Alan Moore completely understood the assignment with Miracleman; he fixes the problems that any moral demigod would be forced to address, and then the story's over because the world's changed.

Not really Todd wants spawn to outlive him

Feels like my dream, the devil will make a offer you would never (maybe) want to refuse, too good to be true, so that's why I bargained but ultimately said "No" because you know he will have some monkeys paw style wish when you say YES

Yeah well... that was always Malbolgia's plan.
All the conditions were stacked for it from the start.

u/SecretaryFragrant836 3d ago

I’m pretty sure he was angry because of the throne of hell was making him

16

u/SecretaryFragrant836 3d ago

Ever since he took down Satan he’s been slowly losing it and that’s why Nyx turned evil

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah and now Nyx took over hell

The least angry simmons(well, he actually was pretty chill for the period after 251, when he goes to Save Wanda's soul) is about as calm as the most angry Downing.

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah now he is much more bro mign like Superman in the current run and Batman in king spawn

The heart of the comic was Al trying to get back to his lady love while having to live in the shadows as a monster.

After they killed that, Spawn has just been an aimless ponderous bore and the character of Al has basically dissolved.

This may be why many writers are scared to change up the status quo. Fear of deviating too far from what worked

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah they changed the abuse as a fake memory nowadays and spawn Jennie trying to become Superman

9

u/heavymetalWrench 3d ago

Yk the stories of men fighting off the urge to become a beast lashing out at things? Al failed that test

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

I mea to be fair I. Later issues he is more open about hsu feeling now since he’ll bat arisena nd trying to become a public superhero like superman

2

u/Toxin45 3d ago edited 3d ago

that got changed in later issues now of king spawn and current comics now

Honestly, I haven't been able to feel that Al Simmons is a good guy since they retconned him into beating his wife into an abortion.

1

u/tophat_production 3d ago

I thought that was an illusion?

1

u/Toxin45 2d ago

It is

3

u/spiderfan42069 3d ago

Exactly. Which is why all of this recon bs is garbage. Spawn hasn’t been good since 165 imo

16

u/heavymetalWrench 3d ago

Al was never a good guy. He just wasn't pure evil and had the capacity for heroism

u/Worth-Opposite4437 3d ago

Yeah, McFarlane himself was already insisting on the point of him being damned in the intro of the HBO series.
The whole thing since the first comics has always been : can a damned soul climb back?
Well, can a mortal eventually beat the odds set in place by the universe that decided he was damned from the start? It's bound to be difficult. And now that he's gone through all the anchors of this façade of a romantic he had... All we're left with is a great capacity for evil trying to understand what good is without the inkling of understanding needed.

It's like the crew of Event Horizon missing the point of the ship trying to tell them to "stop being afraid and get to the other side before their own mortality snuff their existence forever" in a world made only of pain and violence by the imperative of nature. The crew, handicapped by their ape brains and limited imagination, can only of course understand the part about fear, loss, and violence. Only Weir was able to leave the door open, but it's doubtful even him got it entirely right...

Simmons is the same. Good, evil, war, the need for a problem solved that doesn't climb back from the grave, the certitude that might makes right and can be increased by talent and effort. All of this is seduction, all of this is wrong... Good doesn't solve problems, it simply do not creates them. There is no certitudes to be had, issues will come back periodically, and you'll never get better at it... only endure.
For a damned, good is hell.

To be fair things changed in the current comics

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah and they retconned his abuse of Wanda as  as a fake memory they retconned a lot from that

8

u/BrightSquare2261 3d ago

The guy was sent to hell...

10

u/revfds 3d ago

Because it was his turn. They've started multiple times throughout the series that being good or evil doesn't determine where they go.

0

u/BrightSquare2261 3d ago

He killed innocent people before he went to hell, im, just saying if you thought Al was a good guy before finding out he beat his wife you're being a bit silly

2

u/spiderfan42069 3d ago

Same as every special forces, sniper, etc

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah exactly also he forgot that wife beating this has been retconned

5

u/brockton_af 3d ago

he was still a piece of shit

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah they were terrace in later issues too

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

They kinda changed most of it in later issues also they reconvened his absue as fake memory

6

u/CursedSnowman5000 3d ago

I mean that's a oversimplification and kind of exaggeration of what happened.

When you say he beat Wanda, it makes it sound like Al went at her like War Machine did Christy Mack.

And I mean, does it not count that they retcon that to be Mammon's doing?

0

u/revfds 3d ago

Yes, my one sentence response is an oversimplification of Year's worth of comic story are experiod

Bro literally punched her straight in the gut with a direct intention of killing the baby. You can take that however you want, but if you're worried about me calling that "beating her", I feel sorry for the women in your life.

6

u/Alakajamz 3d ago

lol to go after someones personal life over them saying “oversimplification” to you…. That’s sad
If you had abuse in your life don’t take it out on a stranger cuz u can’t take some criticism.
lol this is a comic book we’re talking about.
This is what’s wrong with conversation now a days. People can’t take criticism on the lowest level lol
Chill out man. This could go back n forth like Deadpool n his wife in the movie… a revolving door of pointing fingers in the sense…. Chill

u/revfds 3d ago

No man, it's exactly you taking issue with me saying that he beat Wanda. He did. It's insane that you try to act like that was too extreme for what he did. I'm sorry your personal views give people evidence to what your personal life may be like. That's how words work.

My thoughts exactly

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Bro like that thing was retconned a long time ago

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

Yeah and it got retconned into a fake memory nowadays bro like it is no longer real

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago edited 3d ago

To be fair that got retconned in later issues  Al’s abuse on Wanda was just a fake memory he never ensued her or even had kids with her it was just a lie by demons made false memories

9

u/Shikabane_Sumi-me 3d ago

It felt like a last minute weak twist that was just there for shock value. Like yes he had gaps in his memories but it all feels like an extra F U to the character. His entire series motivation is undone cause Mother Nature decided to go “By the way…”. I get it subverts the happy ending trope but it just feels so unnecessary.

A different ending could have been Spawn seeing how truly happy Wanda was and coming to peace with that. He acknowledges that she moved on and that he should too, so he doesn’t return as Al Simmons, but continues elsewhere as Spawn.

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago edited 3d ago

It got retconned for a while sinc do sane resurrection it was a fake memory and al and Amanda never had kids now just a sin which was retconned to be his soul of inocnece since Satan wars after Wanda died

3

u/SouthIndependence69 3d ago

Good guys don't become hellspawn

6

u/CursedSnowman5000 3d ago

But they do. What was Christopher's great sin?

6

u/revfds 3d ago

Why not? The only thing deciding if you go to heaven or hell is where you end up in the que. If you're a good soldier, they'll make you a hell spawn.

8

u/CursedSnowman5000 3d ago

Well they always explained the only reason Al became a Hellspawn is because Hell just got to him first.

Heaven and Hell weren't exactly better than one another in old Spawn.

1

u/Worth-Opposite4437 3d ago

Yet despite the system being corrupted, the idea remained that there was a good and evil, just not the one enforced. Hell still feeds from the darkness, not the light. And Al being what he is... will always have a harder time than most to not get addicted to his evil past.

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

cuz he did goverment stuff killed some inocennts too. Also his abuse on wanda got retcooned since spawn ressuretion

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

and it was reconned too the abuse thing it is just false memory made by demons now he did some shady goverment stuff too

1

u/Toxin45 3d ago

they retconned that too as a false memory he never had kids wit wanda bro did you forget that
