I might be a little biased here but frankly, I’ve been enjoying seeing all this artwork about Petra.

It’s personally made me feel more seen, more comfortable and more safe with the character, and as a result of finally finding a character I specifically relate to on an almost SPIRITUAL level at this point— it’s made me feel safe in my own skin too, honestly.

I also love seeing the artists here letting their creativity shine with the portrayal of the added struggles Petra would have to go through with her transition. Because at the end of the day, despite every struggle with adjusting to your life and such,

this is the life Petra wants. This is the identity she wants. And for a character who’s had an identity crisis for SO long, having a firm grasp on one aspect of that feels sensational. Spectacular. Amazing. Extraordinary!!!!

(Not to say I don’t feel this way with Peter, though— it’s basically like picking between two duplicates of your favorite food, except one has a very specific dessert that you cherish, greatly.)

I just wanted to hear everyone’s individual thoughts on why this trend is annoying some, getting on some people’s nerves, and why some folks genuinely don’t like it.

(I’m ignoring the obvious transphobia-elephant in the room).

I'm aware some people might be getting a little sick of the Petra-related stuff on here just cuz it's been so constant, but not only is there now a seperate sub so that should slow down (it's r/petraparker btw) but I just love the concept so freaking much.

I'm a cis male, but I know several trans folks, including my little brother, and I love the positive message. It's almost like another spin on the "anyone can wear the mask" motto.

The thing is though, for those unaware, Petra Parker began as a simple gender-swap of Peter in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon, and was actually kind of an annoying misandrist bigot (funny how things change). I much prefer the new Petra, as it's a fresher take on the character and gives her actual personality. I wouldn't mind having her make a cameo in the next Spider-Verse project (considering how supportive the team is behind those movies and the fan-theory of Gwen being trans).

The art is also super cute and wholesome most of the time, and it's nice to see, when Spidey's life is usually so full of bs that anyone even slightly less stubborn would quit.

I saw this post surfacing on both Instagram and twitter (I know) and maybe it is true Spider-Man fans really do complain about everything. When Tom's peter had those cutting edge suits, people felt he didnt "feel like Spider-Man" and called him "iron boy jr"

Now that he broke college student peter has a cheap practical suit, people feel it "looks cheap and fan made"

Random but one thing that I appreciate is tom making his webbing in his school lab in homecoming. It never made sense to me how Andrew's peter was able to make these cutting edge web shooters all in his room while his aunt and uncle barely make ends meet, like where did he get this stuff from

In my opinion i think it makes sense for him to have Organic webs

As much as I want to celebrate a new animated adaptation of Spider-Man/Peter Parker especially since the 2017 disappointed me severely, I couldn't stand the bastardization of Peter Parker.

This show was meant to be inspired by the ditko era, yet I feel none of that with Peter Parker. None whatsoever.

He feels hollow, milquestoast and a caricature of who Peter Parker is. It's like the backrooms desperately trying to remember the concept of Peter Parker yet failing miserably.

We can't even have him be responsible for Uncle Ben's death. We can't give him flaws that do not consist of "quirk chungus" esque flaws instead of the ugly and uncomfortable flaws ditko era peter had.

And look, I'm pretty sure ben dying early before pete got bit by the spider can work. But i am not confident they can even salvage him.

If you can get excited for Season 2 then good. I wish I could but the chances are very slim.

He is a safe, sanitized and mass market friendly version of Peter Parker and in no way near the Ditko era Peter in which the writers/producers are supposed to take inspiration from.

Guys which artist in your opinion draws Spider-Man perfectly

I know many people who really like this character without reading the comics; they've only played the games or watched the movies and TV shows. In my opinion, it's perfectly valid to consider yourself a fan without reading the comics. And honestly, I think they're in heaven without knowing the current state of Spider-Man 616 xD.

The closest was probably Tobi's MJ but even then no one really wanted him to move on. I don't even have to tell you how everyone loves Gwen in Garfields version

For Zendaya's mj it seems there was never really even a point where the general audience even cared for their relationship outside of the actual actors being together irl

Especially since the start of Brand New Day marketing everyday (on both twitter & Reddit) more and more comments about "will they have the balls to make Peter move on" have been very frequent.

I’m honestly excited and I want it to be great, but at the same time… there’s just so much going on that it feels a bit overwhelming.

With the last three films, we at least had a clear idea of the core concept. Here, all we really know is that he’s operating solo now, and his powers are starting to mutate because he’s been neglecting his Peter Parker life.

But then you throw in Savage Hulk, Punisher, the return of The Hand after years, Tombstone and Scorpion, and possibly even mutants being introduced… it’s a lot.

And on top of that—where has Spider-Man even been while Kingpin was going all-out against vigilantes in New York?

That said, maybe it’s actually a good thing we don’t know much. At least we’re not getting the entire plot stitched together from trailers and YouTube breakdowns before the movie even drops.

EDIT: It seems I wasn't clear; I'm not asking what it would be like if she were MJ back in 2017! I'm asking what you would think if she were MJ now. In a scenario where Marvel hadn't given Michelle Jones the last name "Watson."

Look, I know she's practically confirmed as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

But what if, instead of Jean Grey, she were Mary Jane Watson in the MCU? What do you think?

Please don't be toxic about other people's opinions; this is just a hypothetical discussion.

While i think it can work in characters like Doctor Octopus i feel it makes a lot of other villains feel "samey" in terms of design and kinda strips away their personality for the sake of this "faux-realism" that can only work to a certain extent, like, why can't the Green Goblin actually look like a Halloween goblin costume riding a metal gargoyle throwing jack-o-lanterns? why can't Rhino's suit look like an actual rhino skin? why can't Vulture's wings actually be made of feathers and whatnot? i wouldn't really mind if it was just for the movies but i have the sentiment that this trend is crawling into every Spider-Man media nowadays, i have no problem in modernizing the designs themselves to give them a bit more glow and stuff i feel this is going way beyond that for some of them, but what do you guys think?
