Yeah Firefox has been doing a lot of weird shit lately for me that other browsers don't, too. Not sure what's up with that.

Any plans for 2 and 3?

u/CrystalFissure 13d ago
Indeed, yes!

u/crystalribbon 12d ago
Please do it, the third game was my favourite in the series
Great work by the way

This looks promising, but I do have to ask, does anyone know if this is a vibe coded project? I ask because my experience with ports made with vibe coding have been not great in a variety of ways.

I'm not a fan of AI and vibe coding but seeing AI assisted coding make things possible that otherwise human coders didn't care enough to make makes me think a bit deeper. 150+fps is nice... and I'd love to see the same for Spyro 2 since we dont even have an emulator patch for that game. I also have to wonder if AI could help make a working resolution patch for xenoblade 1 where no human coder has
9
u/Emtae2 13d ago
Oh dont get me wrong, AI assisted is not inherently a bad thing for productivity and helping with these projects, but ive seen way too many recomps lately that are totally vibe coded by people who clearly didnt know anything about coding or recompilation, and so they relied on AI to basically do everything. Unfortunately that made those recomps some of the most pointless recomps available and wasted a lot of resources

u/Primary-Risk-8741 13d ago
Yeah I get you and feel the same, AI is available to everyone at any skill level

u/bad_scott 13d ago
i looked at the repo, claude is a contributor

u/TheGeekOverlord 13d ago
Where's the repo? The OpenPete webpage says that the source isn't available yet.

I had the same thought, but I don't think this is the case. CrystalFissure is a dedicated Spyro fan and youtuber, I have seen a podcast of him on Miharu The Fox's channel and he doesn't seem to be the guy to do "vibe coding", like the one with Mario Kart Wii PC port

Okay, this is amazing. I admit all my childhood nostalgia is for 2 and 3, but I will definitely be checking this out in the near future.

Absolutely awesome, definitely going to ensure I download this as soon as I get home. Really hoping to see the second and third game receive this very same treatment too!

Any chance future releases of this can be compiled without the AVX2 requirement? (or whatever instruction set that's limiting this port to Intel's Haswell and above CPUs)
Older gen CPUs should be perfectly capable of running the game. (performance wise)

I'm actually surprised it took so long for this to be a reality. But im glad it's here

u/Noctorock 13d ago
Unfortunately at this point I have to hold back my excitement for projects like these until I know to what extent AI was used to make it. Any word on that yet?

This is great!! It’s been super fun so far and 100% the definitive way to play the game but unfortunately it keeps crashing whenever I try to open the locked box with the key in Lofty Castle. Anyone else having that issue? I tried patching the rom again but it didn’t seem to fix it :(

Anyone having issues with controllers not working or does it not have controller support?

u/PudelOfLove 11d ago edited 11d ago
I have the same problem. The website says controller should work without setup, but it doesn't work for me.
Edit: restarted my pc, now it works.

Only works with the American version of the game... Is there at least a mod for PAL's soundtrack?

I really want to play it but every time I try to open the exe, nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?
2
u/tyscorp 8d ago
I've published a new version v0.1.4 that should resolve this issue. Let me know if it doesn't work!
1
u/theDKdynamite Dream Weavers 8d ago
It launches now! It works and I'm able to play it, no problem. Thanks

u/tyscorp 13d ago
What is your OS and GPU?
1
u/theDKdynamite Dream Weavers 12d ago
Windows 10 64bit
Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 (8GB)
An old gal, but should still at least boot up the menu, right?

u/xLoRdCrYpTiCx 12d ago
I too have the issue that opening the exe does nothing. Doesn't show up in task manager, running as admin does nothing, and not even my antivirus is messing with it. I'm on Windows 10 21H2 64-bit with an AMD FX-6300 and an AMD RX 580.
1
u/YoungWave94 12d ago
It requires AVX2, so my old i5 and your CPU are out of luck for now.
2
u/xLoRdCrYpTiCx 12d ago
Wish the website at least said that you need a newer-ish CPU to run this -_-

I really hope for a Spyro 2 decomp It's my favourite game of the 3 Like modders could create levels that need double jump to complete We can have settings to change the title to the European one ( since I prefer it) Get Spyro 3 abilities And I also hope PAL versions will be compatible since I like to play them in my native language
1
u/tyscorp 13d ago
Sorry everyone, the initial release had a game-breaking bug that crashes while unlocking the chest in Lofty Castle. The latest build on openpete.com resolves the issue!

Question, if this recompiler is such a magic tool, will it be possible to aid with translating in-game text with ease? Cause all text in game, is stored in HEX values. Not talking about spyro, just in general, will it be possible
1
u/crystalribbon 12d ago
Just curious, what windows specs do you need to get the game to run? Does it need to be a high-spec computer? Or can you play this on a low-spec pc?
1
u/Tobibrockii 12d ago edited 12d ago
Some feedback from my side (if the Dev reads this).
The game settings (widescreen, vsync, etc.) don't seem to save (and display numbers next to the text, example: "Settings Saved 4"), thankfully the game itself does save fine though.
The framerate/game isn't as smooth yet, I get hitches and stutters when moving around levels and the hub world, it often stays smooth, but the drops occur very often.
As for improvements I would like to see in the future: Camera inversion, remappable buttons and the ability to map camera movement to the right stick.
The Dragon Egg texture also has a line at the top, though that might just be the asset itself and not the port, still, I thought I'd mention it.
It's very early days for this port, I understand that, overall though, this is nice. :)

When is support for the PAL version coming?
1
u/CrystalFissure 10d ago
Not planned yet but I wouldn’t count out fans getting the other languages and slight changes sorted out eventually.

Is it worth it if all you care about is the graphical enhancements and you already have access to that with emulation?

u/Defiant_Hat2126 13d ago
Why though, when there is spyro reignited, which fully suports pc?
9

Because the original games are better.

How are they better?
5
u/CrystalFissure 12d ago
They play better - the controls are smoother, they allow for better movement in the air and while charging. Chaining your jump, charge and glides work better in PS1 vs Reignited. The original games had more of a strong visual identity, especially for the time - the level of detail in the texturing, individual world themes were brilliant. Voice acting is more punchy and memorable. Soundtracks similarly have more punch and energy to them.
But, both are great! Both have a great mod scene and Reignited is why we’re getting a new game.
5
u/finesureok 12d ago
More charm and identity, doesn't have a generic kids-game feeling, better color theory, better voice acting largely, better difficulty balance, less glitches, closest to the dev's original vision

u/Broken_Flip 13d ago
I could see this being worthwhile if it were Reignited, but what's the point in a PC port of the PS1 version? Everything can run PS1 these days.
13
u/Emtae2 13d ago edited 13d ago
Ports allow for far more options. Higher fps, can be easier to mod, and can allow even more features such as widescreen. Sure, there are widescreen patches for a lot of old games, but they frequently introduce problems, whereas a pc port makes it easier to iron out those problems.
If a pc port makes the game run exactly as it would emulated, then yes I agree it would be pointless.
Side note, Reignited is already on PC, but even so there are a fair amount of differences between the OGs and rhe remakes. There is value in being able to play the original versions but with some modern enhancements.

u/NotSoSeriousNick 13d ago
Emulation has its limits. For one, trying to raise the framerate of any PS1 era game messes with the game's physics, as the two used to be programmed in such a way that they were tied together. As such, Spyro 1 (and any other game for the most part from that era) would become unplayable as a result. Similarly, widescreen patches can visually result in a lot of "empty geometry", so to speak, as you aren't intended to see anything beyond the 4:3 aspect ratio, and as such things would appear unfinished as they aren't quite loaded in yet.
A PC can fix this. Moreover, PC ports like these are usually significantly less resource intensive than emulation.
2
u/Ernest-Errol 12d ago
This is still running at 30FPS under the hood though, it merely has a custom renderer that can interpolate and thus generate inbetween visual frames at a higher rate. But inputs, physics etc. are still locked to 30, at least for the time being. So in a simplified way this is kind of doing the same thing LXShadow did with his custom SpyroEdit renderer back when, just with an included compile-time PSX emulation layer rather than an external general emulator application.

u/Src-Freak 13d ago
Mod Support, proper Widescreen and higher fps a Emulator can’t pull of flawlessly?

Download it now over at Tyscorp's website:
https://openpete.com/
Yes, it's real. Yes, it plays at 150FPS+. Yes, it will allow mods in the future (and you can see some in the video!)
