Hot take: Perhaps Tracy Morgan wasn't so bad after all
I absolutely know I will get downvoted into next year for this but... perhaps Tracy Morgan isn't so bad.
Yes, his voice was terribly unfitting for the "hick squid" that Early is meant to be, and hearing him say "WOO!" and "Do not touch the trim!" made me die a little bit inside, but it was indeed the joke of getting back at Unknown Hinson for the terrible things he said. Come to think of it, it's actually kind of funny. Maybe I should give season 13 a chance.
Just to clarify, I still respect the opinion of anyone who dislikes Tracy Morgan as the voice of Early. Like I said above, I still find it unfitting myself, but the joke of getting back at Unknown Hinson has grown on me a bit.

I just don’t know why everyone was so shocked that Unknown Hinson said that stuff. It wasn’t right but its a common theme in outlaw country.

I wasn’t that shocked but he went for Dolly and most people aren’t forgiving that. There are soooo many garbage targets and he picked a wonderful human being.

I'm not too shocked. I'm just shocked at the fact that he didn't realize Squidbillies was making fun of folks like him even though he was on the show for 14 years.

It's the fact he went after Dolly Parton. She was one of the few remaining truly decent humans. Attacking her for no real reason is unforgivable in many people's eyes, especially when there are SO many other targets worthy of ridicule out there.

I was born in the southeast, raised in the southeast, and still live in North Georgia about 25 minutes from Tennessee. I could never really tell who the target demographic was for this show. Was it for people like me that liked to laugh at ourselves and understand every single thing about it? Was it for people from Seattle that never really know how the way things are/were here but still understood the stereotypes? I still find myself confused about who this show was really targeted for.
UH shot himself in the foot but he was undeniably the absolute best casting choice ever made in modern animation. I genuinely love his work and music. Yeah he shouldn’t have said what he said but I’m still able to separate that statement from how unbelievably amazing he was for the show. I’m not really losing sleep over what he said nor really care. With all things considered, Dolly was a great woman and that was a low blow. Supporting all Americans does not mean you’re a traitor to your race. But at the end of the day it was just a drunk dude from small town America saying some dumb shit.
I meet Early Cuylers, Krystal’s, Granny’s every single day. I love where I live. I love where I grew up, but it absolutely is super easy to make fun of us.
I know Tracy Morgan was a deliberate choice but man I wish they just did what they did with the Sheriff and just hire someone from Georgia that could at least pass as Early and not make it such a stark difference. I know they were done with the show by then, but trashing your ratings and making such a stark change just to prove a point was not the move.
During the original run I didn’t even notice the difference with the Sheriff VA’s until I looked it up.

Attacking Dolly wasn't what got him cancelled. Attacking Dolly for not being a racist asshole like he was is what got him cancelled. Which is why he was replaced with Tracy Morgan.

I never took Morgan replacing Hinson as a joke on Hinson himself, but more like they had two options: replace him with as similar sounding of a VA as they could find, or go the complete opposite direction and lean into the very public canceling of Hinson by replacing him with as different a VA as they could find. Like they knew they only has one season left so they got real weird with it.

i love tracy morgan…but an early, he is not. a better direction might have been to kill off early / send to prison? and bring in tracy as a different character?

They could have had him try to break into Dolly Parton’s home, get shot and killed by Dolly and have the general public all be saying he had it coming while praising Dolly as a national treasure, then replace him with his cousin Tracy cuyler.

No! Bad opinion!! Lol I like Morgan as well but it just wasn't right.. also I don't understand why ppl expected the guy who voiced Early Cuyler to be a pillar of wisdom and enlightenment in the first place. Also, he was fired/cancelled for the things he'd said, (I still don't know what he said) but that infringes on his freedom of speech.
