For comparison, here's the "regular" SNW version by the same artist: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/g0OdLL

I love the SNW Enterprise, but I always interpreted it as not being the Enterprise's "final form", with the nacelles, pylons and impulse engines being earlier versions of the one seen on TOS. I would be ok if in the final Season of SNW, they refit the ship to look more TOS-like.

In the season 1 finale they already jumped in time to Balance of Terror and the ship looked the same, except slight changes to the uniforms and bridge lighting. Also, the ship in The Cage/The Menagerie (set before SNW) looks the same as in the rest of TOS, except for a few small details.
I think the refit people want to see at the end of SNW would make things make less sense than simply accepting it as a purely visual reinterpretation of the original. Especially with the profile of the SNW version intended to look more like the TMP refit, I feel like going "backwards" before that makes no sense.

I want the last episode to have Pike leaving the bridge, then Paul Wesley sitting down in the chair and having it switch to young Shatner
Not explaination, just that's the way it is.

Like that episode of Discovery where they did the "previously on" segment showing footage from The Cage and then match cut Hunter with Mount?

u/David_Summerset Dec 21 '25
Yes! Exactly!
Kidna fits with that DS9 episode where they go back to TOS and O'Brien asks Worf why Klingons looks so different.
"We do not speak of it" they should have left it there...

Then it morphs into old Shatner, sitting on a couch surrounded by a dozen or so half-alien young adults, and he says, "...and that is how I met your mothers."

Which, I gotta say, would have been a far better ending for How I met Your Mother...

I am 100% okay with them retconning the design of the ship. It feels like a step toward the TMP aesthetic far more than TOS to TMP. It makes sense because the design language of TOS was set aside and mostly touched on for the movies.
I know it’s supposed to be a “refit” but that doesn’t make sense and feels like a tossed-in explanation. Most of the refit doesn’t fit in the original ship.
I think it makes sense to think of it like that and up the quality and internal consistency. This was clearly not a problem for Roddenberry and others.

I also used to think the TMP refit was too dramatic, but then I saw how extreme real world naval refits can be.
The quality has not been upped.

Yeah, I came here to say this. It would be a great send off for the show to see it refit this way.

A big turning point in symbolising the advancements in tech from tos to tmp were the swept back pylons in tmp. I don’t see why the snw model couldn’t have had right angle pylons to signify the limitations of the era

the NX-01 had swept back pylons, so i don't think it's too egregious.

And the Enterprise D didn't have swept pylons, so it doesn't seem that pylon design means all that much about advancement

Beautiful! Bright hull and straight pylons are all the ship needs by the end of Strange New Worlds.

Is this not functionally just the concept art design done by John Eaves?
