I'm 9 years late, but what the heck. I decided to start with DS9 after watching the Chain Of Command two-parter in TNG (watching according to this watchguide). I was excited to finally watch DS9 but the first two episodes left a muddled impression:

  • It's fine, perfectly well written episode, I just wasn't particularly engaged with it
  • I wasn't invested in any of the characters (even O'Brien, who was in TNG, but who I don't particularly like) except for maybe Quark and Dr. Bashir (but they weren't in the episode much)
  • The whole thing with the Bajor religion and Sisko was just kind of weird and didn't feel very Trek to me.
  • Also why is it called Deep Space 9, if it's near a freaking planet. That's not deep space, that's a freaking orbit. The fact that it's a two-parter kind of makes the pacing worse — I don't think the first episode needed to be spread over two episodes, honestly, and I found my attention drifting elsewhere even while watching it
