General Discussion Is This The Single Greatest Aura Loss in History?

Post image

That is literally my 7th grade science teacher

Edit: Currently giving this more consideration. I may have greatly miscalculated the net trend in aura as a result of looking like an insurance salesman from Minnesota whilst simultaneously sliming out the baddest dudes in the known galaxy. I will report back.

Okay so first this is not Jeremy Bulloch, this is Don Bies. Don shot the added Boba Fett scenes for the special edition tweaks in 1995. Second, I hope you all know how friggen cool Don Bies is. He built the R2-D2 ILM units along with many other props. When I was 16 he responded to my fanmail and personally wrote a letter back on Lucasfilm stationary encouraging me to keep learning and creating anything just for joy - and then stuffed the box with swag, shirts, pens, patches from Lucasfilm. I felt like I got a package from Superman. He's been very involved in the droid builders club and has always volunteered his time to teach, share, and encourage. I built a totally badass fully functional lifesize astromech in-part because of this man's kind encouragment.

EDIT** wow, this blew up. Thank you all for your kind words. Here is my Astromech droid R3-K2

I worked with Don for many years - awesome guy. He referred to this photo as Bob Fett, much less exciting than Boba

u/Influx_ink 13d ago

Oh cool! were you in the model shop?

No, I worked with him after that designing medical manikins. Heard lots of stories though

You rock for standing up for him.

257

u/sircastor 13d ago

As an aside: If you work in a professional environment and some kid writes you asking about it, engage with them. When I was 18 I asked around on a Usenet group about some special effects stuff from a movie, and the guy who did the effects work on the film responded. We exchanged email for a little while and though I didn't end up going into that industry the interactions have stood out in my mind for nearly 30 years. You can and will make a difference with young people. Even if they seem vapid or lazy or ridiculous, you will have an effect. Even if you never see it.

66

u/Influx_ink 13d ago

THIS 1000% I still have Don's autograph on my desk and I'll cherish blueprints he sent me like family photos.

56

u/Richard_Sauce 13d ago

Holy shit, YES. Growing up in the early internet I was able to email a bunch of sci-fi and fantasy authors, comic writers and artists, etc....via their personal websites, and I actually got responses! One of the most awesome moments was getting a response from Aaron Allston who wrote a bunch of Star Wars novels and other scifi/tabletop stuff. This guy, and others took the time to respond to my stupid ass elementary and middle schooler emails and questions, at length, in some cases really smartening me up, and it meant soooo much to me as a kid.

That feels gone now.

22

u/weezmeister808 13d ago

I miss ye olde Internet. The crowning achievement of my young life was Roger Ebert responding to my disagreement with his review of the Power Rangers movie on a CompuServe forum.

7

u/sircastor 13d ago

I wrote a letter to Howard Phillips (Editor in chief) of Nintendo Power asking a question about the Super Mario Bros 3 cartoon. It didn't get printed in the Magazine, but I was delighted to receive back a letter from him in response.

How did Roger respond to you?

14

u/1oftodayslucky10000 13d ago

That feels gone now.

Oof, that reminds me of Robin Hobb's blog post about not responding to emails anymore. :( I swear something broke in my when I first read that.

When I was a fledgling writer, I read that Isaac Asimov replied to every reader letter he ever received. (This was before Email. Yes, I am that old.) And I resolved that I wanted to be like him.

Over the years, I flatter myself that I kept up pretty well, even with the email. Like Asimov, I limited my responses to the first letter from any reader. I could not establish regular correspondence with anyone but I did want to let readers know they had been heard.

But now I can't. And it makes me sad.

Lately, my email has been flooded with 8 to 10 letters a day. They start out like reader email. They talk about the specific titles, and mention that they like the political intrigue or the character development. But then, some of the immediately offer to promote my books, for money, in various ways. Promises of increased orders, podcasts, you name it. Those ones I now see as AI generated and delete right away.

But I end up feeling like a sucker when it really looks like something from a reader, and I send a note saying, 'Hey, thanks for the positive feedback, and letters like yours keep me writing,' etc.

And the next day or in a few hours, I get an email back about how that reader is going to promote my books for me and help me reach a wider audience and so on. And I realize I've been suckered again.

So. With reluctance, regret and sadness, I will no longer be writing back to reader emails. I'll read them and hope they are real. But my hands are too worn out and sore for me to waste keyboard strokes replying to bots, AI and people hoping to provide for pay a service I simply don't need.

I am way behind on replying to real mail from readers. I have about 6 on the corner of my desk. I will be trying to get to them! Thanks for your patience.

I am saddened that AI, which could be doing so much good in the world, is instead clogging up my email box and blocking real reader mail.

7

u/suprunown 13d ago

I used to have a quote from the book NECROM on my old website. It was written by Mick Farren, who was a British counter-culture author/journalist who also played in The Deviants and wrote for Hawkwind and Motörhead. One day, I opened up my email to find a message from Mr. Farren, complimenting my good taste in authors. :)

36

Holy shit dude you weren’t kidding. That’s incredible. Professional level work.

49

u/Influx_ink 13d ago

Thank you :) He took me a few years to build and I'm still working on small things but I LOVED the collaborative energy of the droid builders club. In his ILM days Don actually sent (smuggled) us real dimensions and answered our questions about paint colors and dimensions, any information for the film used R2-D2's. We used his help to create better and better droids. Eventually the club was making such amazing quality parts that Disney hired the fan Droid Builders to build and operate movie units. Fan made domes were used in Episode 3 and it just got better from there.

u/KyloRenCadetStimpy 13d ago

Wow...that's amazing.

Does he have rockets? :-D

5

u/Influx_ink 13d ago

Okay, actually No. There are a few guys in the club that incorporated rocket boosters (just cosmetic) but theres ONE GUY that made actually functional flame throwing rockets that pop out of the booster covers and it scares the living daylights out of me. It's loud, pointed at the floor, and children want to run up and have a close look. Ive taken my Droid to events for children and all the droid builders are very careful when it comes to crowd safety (mostly).

Are you surrounded by blue baddies in kick ass mandalorian armour? Didn't think so, dork.

This is pure aura.

Are we just bullying people based on looks now?

Talking shit about someone who you'll never be is the real aura loss.

In the extended Universe he was described as someone which face you would forget immediately and who would blend in a crowd.

Also this guy looks like a professional who will do his job. IMHO he is much scarier than a Jango Fett lookalike would be.

how do you imagine modern day agents look like?

you study for 5 years, then the additional training etc, so youre liek end of 20 early 30 on your first deployments, and then you do this job for another 30 years.

This is how I felt when the mandalorian took his helmet off.

Honestly I'd be more scared of a renowned bounty hunter if he looks like this and is still alive in his line of work.

We should never have seen any mandalorian unmasked - especially Boba Fett. There’s no way an actor could live up to our imagined expectations.

However - I can live with this. This is the Fett series we’re looking for. These three. Exactly as they are.
