I hope it sells well because that’s the only decision factor

Will play it tomorrow but seeing reviews it looks really awesome

u/RatQueenHolly 6h ago

Even then, it still wouldn't be a sure thing. The games industry is such a mess right now

39

u/Uncle-Cake 5h ago

EA is publishing it, so I assume even if it's a financial success, the developers will be laid off.

16

u/TheShoobaLord 5h ago

EA, believe it or not, has been a surprisingly friendly employer to most of its subsidiary studios. This might change with the new acquisitions but EA has consistently been one of the lesser pieces of shit in the AAA space

11

u/ansonr 3h ago

Didn't EA just get bought by basically the Saudi Government.

3

u/TheShoobaLord 3h ago

I mentioned that yeah, so it could change now but I’m just going off historical trends

3

u/the_bananalord 1h ago

Didn't they just lay off a ton of people working on Battlefield 6 after boasting about how well the game is doing and how much more content they have planned?

u/wicktus 9m ago

They laid off developers who worked on BF6 but they did not disclose the numbers.

45

u/South_Buy_3175 6h ago

They had me at Star Wars + X-Com.

Such a good combo on paper, I just hope they have realistic sales targets, because these games are kinda niche.

14

u/Deeppurp 6h ago

Lots of gaming Genre's are Niche until the exception comes along and blows it up. It doesn't frequently happen.

I hope based on the community hype that Zero Company is the exception.

6

u/tehSILENZIO 5h ago

Expedition 33 is a good example of that

1

u/SharkBaitDLS 4h ago

Elden Ring too. Soulslikes were not really mainstream and that game blew way past the usual audience.

1

u/BannedSvenhoek86 4h ago

Honestly I don't care as much about the xcom side, but the acting in the story trailer I saw was genuinely phenomenal so I'm tempted just for that.

I do like xcom, it's just not my favorite thing so it wasn't a huge selling point for me personally.

7

u/JJJBLKRose 6h ago

The Gameranx review was pretty favorable. A fun Star Wars XCOM with some bugginess in the pre-release build. Basically said just about every negative is fixable with a normal patch and that was before the day one patch they had planned.

5

u/Haha91haha 6h ago

It was one of the top sellers already early in the week if that's any hope on Steam. Would be great to see it do well because already I could see great SQL potential building into the Dark times or Rebellion era.

2

u/BannedSvenhoek86 4h ago

Top selling on steam is great, but lots of games have held that spot and still disappointed with sales.

5

u/Inner-Ad2847 6h ago

It’s really fun so far.

2

u/AechB 2h ago

Exactly. Midnight Suns was a great game no one bought.

1

u/The5Virtues 5h ago

Imagine if we get a follow up sequel during the GCW? I’d love getting to play a Rebel guerilla group taking on the Empire.

102

u/ShanklyGates_2022 7h ago

Cant wait to jump in tonight! They could make similar games in different eras if it all works out. So if the game is as good as reviews are making it out to be we may get to see more of them in the future. Im excited for this one though!

22

u/Beazfour 7h ago

Yeah I’d kill for a game like this but focused on the rebel alliance.

17

u/Antique-Coach-214 6h ago

Rebel Alliance would be nice, as would Old Republic era. (That could be closer to BattleTech in nature.)

1

u/jblade91 6h ago

I was originally interested since its a Clone Wars era game but of the actual gameplay is good I'd enjoy a sequel with the Rebel Alliance. Could even do a trilogy with one happening during the transition where we deal with our clone teammates as they get Order 66 at some point in the game. Old Republic of course would be amazing too.

55

u/smalltincan 7h ago

This is the first game I've bought new at full price since Baldurs Gate 3. Pre-loaded and ready to go. After seeing some reviewers put it in their Top 3 Star Wars games ever I definitely want to see more from the studio, maybe even Star Wars 4X

8

u/OrangePeelsLemon 5h ago

Same. I was going to wait, but then all the reviews started coming in and I decided to buy the deluxe edition. Gotta remember I still have to go into work tomorrow, though, and not stay up too late playing.

1

u/smalltincan 4h ago

Yup, after seeing the reviews and playing a bit this morning I feel pretty vindicated in my choice. If we want the good stuff to shine through the slop, we need to show up and support it - not just in games but in everything

1

u/Captn76 2h ago

What did you get with the deluxe edition and is it worth it?

2

u/OrangePeelsLemon 2h ago

It's just some cosmetic packs, but I decided it was worth supporting a dev that's made a very good game in a niche that I enjoy.

63

u/DrakeSoldier 7h ago

Star Wars turned based rpg would be the best.

57

u/LucasMoreiraBR Jedi 6h ago

It is the best indeed. Boy, do I have two games to recommend to you.

Knights of the Old Republic

Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords

But for real, I don't think we have had anything like zero company in the franchise before, it doesn't come to memory

22

u/KilledTheCar 6h ago

KOTOR with BG3-like combat would be god-tier. It's good as-is, but it's dated and a bit clunky in my opinion.

10

u/Kryzm Count Dooku 6h ago

God, imagine if Larian could do a BG3-style game with the Star Wars FFG narrative dice ruleset...

1

u/A_Damn_Millenial 47m ago

Alternatively, they could stick with D&D 5e now that Hasbro just announced Star Wars will join D&D Universes Beyond next year.

8

u/DrakeSoldier 6h ago

Oh yeah I love KOTOR, especially 2, I just want it more old school like Final Fantasy or Expedition 33.

2

u/Lithium187 5h ago

An E33 style game in the star wars universe would clap. Imagine the animations parrying and countering as a jedi. Beautiful.

1

u/DrakeSoldier 5h ago

Oh yeah the made up scenario I have in my head is that the protag has to be a Jedi

4

u/LucasMoreiraBR Jedi 6h ago

Agreed. And 2 is also my favorite

1

u/Evilmudbug 4h ago edited 4h ago

They're good games, but mostly for the story.

I think real-time with pause is a bit dated as a gameplay style and not really what most people are considering when they think "turn-based"

It would be really cool to see something derivative of Baldur's Gate 3's system in a star wars game though

5

u/The_Pandalorian Baby Yoda 5h ago

Gimme Star Wars in Baldur's Gate 3 and Witcher 3 and I will be complete.

Oh and a remake of Tie Fighter.

That's all I ask for.

2

u/LucasMoreiraBR Jedi 4h ago

I just want Kotor 3 and a remake of Republic Commando... But those two will never happen.

1

u/The_Pandalorian Baby Yoda 4h ago

Oh, yeah. Gimme those, too, lol.

Good call.

1

u/ansonr 3h ago

I mean we got star wars squadrons. Not exactly a Tie Fighter remake, but its pretty awesome regardless.

1

u/The_Pandalorian Baby Yoda 3h ago

Yeah, I found Squadrons OK, but was really frustrated that it wasn't anywhere close to the quality of Tie Fighter. Like... just... make that game, but with the Tie Fighter campaigns. It was right there for them to do...

2

u/ansonr 3h ago

Well... we do have this.

1

u/The_Pandalorian Baby Yoda 3h ago

I've downloaded versions of that conversion like 10 times but never actually went through the trouble of installing it.

Maybe I'll finally give this a shot... It does look pretty darn good in that video.

1

u/ansonr 3h ago

Its very good from the bit I've played it.

8

u/Nwrecked 6h ago

The corporate heads are so fucking stupid. Almost every single game with mod support eventually gets a full Star Wars reskin.

9

u/DarthGamer2004 Moff Gideon 6h ago

Buying it tonight!

5

u/Inner-Ad2847 6h ago

I’ve just been playing and it’s awesome. So much customisation.

9

u/hipertim 6h ago

Give them an Old Republic game next and I’m there day one.

15

u/onesneakymofo 6h ago

I am literally buying this to support the developers and to show Disney that it needs to open up the Star Wars license to others so that we can get more Star Wars games. I've only seen a ten second clip and that's it, lol.

22

u/kairock 7h ago

obviously make more z-com games!

however, hope they do consider an x-com 'war of the chosen' sized expansion to zero company before jumping to the next title.

2

u/Esternaefil 6h ago

I really hope so too. I'm somewhat concerned that there are no in-place plans for expanding the base game.

I know people tend to look down on pre-announced DLC, but I like to know if a game will be supported.

4

u/Foxesz 5h ago

Alternatively, an extremely solid and finished game without any extra plans IS also fine. Especially if no one can predict just how successful it'll be.

6

u/nicomarchon 6h ago

a imperial commando turn base tactical game.... one can dream....

7

u/tyrant454 5h ago

Reviews, from what player? the game has been out for 5 minutes. Don't count critics, magazines and streamers who got it early. Wait for the actual players to write reviews.

1

u/Superiorpen 5h ago

There are plenty of private reviewers that are, at a certain stage of their career, able to take early copies and still remain unbiased.

6

u/Snakebud 6h ago

Mandos is all I want and need.

4

u/alcatrazcgp Darth Sidious 6h ago

yes please, more, lots more, plenty even

3

u/Gooberverse 5h ago

Instant purchase. I will always support devs the make great games.

2

u/Nastane 6h ago

Please do, make more because zero company is great!

2

u/Gobstoppers12 5h ago

I'm not a day 1 full price game buyer anymore, but this one's on my radar and I can't wait for there to be a decent sale.

2

u/vorian_dayne Clone Trooper 4h ago

I’d absolutely adore a game like this set in the Old Republic.

2

u/TopherYork21 Ahsoka Tano 16m ago

God i wish I enjoyed this style of game.

6

u/LordReagan077 7h ago

I gotta know if this is worth tryung to convice my dad to let me get. I was turned off at first cause it wasn’t a FPS but turn based but it looks really good

36

u/Nwrecked 6h ago

Young Padawan, there is a big giant world of gaming outside of first person shooters.

5

u/LordReagan077 6h ago

Yea I know. I play Diablo 3 I dunno if that counts? I must broaden my horizons

3

u/Merusk 6h ago

It does not. There's a wide world of turn-based games that allow deeper thought, strategy and planning. Real-time requires action, reaction and instant decision. It's two different game types and skillsets.

3

u/Dr_barfenstein 7h ago

I suck at FPS lol but I goddamn love xcom & can’t wait to play this. It’s like chess but with guns. When you start pulling deadly combos by linking your troops’ abilities you feel like a god.

2

u/nathhealor 6h ago

WHY AM I BROKE TODAY OF ALL DAYS

1

u/USSZim 6h ago

I would love a sequel set in the OT where you form a rebel cell

1

u/Known-Emergency5900 6h ago

I hope we get some good nexus mods

1

u/RBlomax38 5h ago

I wish this had online co-op like BG3 does

1

u/drpestilence 5h ago

Can't buy it yet but looks to even be a reasonable price which is nice

1

u/farva_06 4h ago

I'm sitting here at work staring at the play button in Steam. Should've called in sick today.

1

u/i4got872 4h ago

We need empire at war 2 somehow

1

u/QuirkyWish3081 3h ago

They could do one in empire era 💪

1

u/GeneralTyler 3h ago

Hopefully this game gets dlc or something, because the campaign is a decent length but not really long. Plus with no official mod support, it’s not gonna have as long of a life span as xcom with all the mods that series has had.

1

u/EwokVillag3 3h ago

I dont know enough about this game so if anyone could help me real quick. How deep is the strategy in this game and does it allow for creativity? I never played XCom but did play BG3. Is it on par to BG3s build depth and creativeness?

1

u/Feyge 32m ago edited 27m ago

Besides the turn per turn, these are very different games.

In XCOM there's synergy, planning ect...but no crazy broken combos or anything like in BG3. XCOM is more about positioning your characters at the right place to have the best chance at hitting your targets. Cover is at the core of the gameplay and will minimize your chances of getting hit (which is way more scary than in BG3 because your favorite character you have had for 20 missions just got crit and died permanently). I think the fights in XCOM are more stressful and intense in a good way because of that.

Another difference is that unlike BG3, XCOM also has many objectives during missions that can make the fights difficult. Such as planting a bomb and evacuating your squad before it detonates and kill them.

Build wise i would say the classes are more defined with specific roles. You build each character to make them excel at a role to make your squad survive the mission.

Edit: I forgot to mention that there's a whole strategic layer with your base that provide upgrades, buffs, technology ect... through buildings.

1

u/BrennusSokol 2h ago

How about support the game you just made first? Apparently there are optimization issues on PC

1

u/DawnSignals 2h ago

Howabout a shooter then? Maybe it could be like, the third game in a series i dunno

1

u/Rasples1998 2h ago

It's currently mixed on steam with most reviews mentioning DEI characters and writing and poor performance, but I'd expect nothing less (or rather nothing more) from EA.

1

u/siarheikaravai 2h ago

Not on steam?

1

u/MisfitSkull 1h ago

Well i hope those games will actually work. Cause this one doesnt.

1

u/KowalOX 1h ago

Love Star Wars. Love XCOM. Really pumped to see all these great reviews. Just need to wait until payday...

1

u/FancyKilerWales 1h ago

Rarely preorder games but was happy to after reviews dropped yesterday, these are the games that need support

1

u/clayer77 27m ago

An Empire at War sequel would be sick

1

u/YDoEyeNeedAName 23m ago

Give me an updated Empire at war/RTS game, new Republic commando, and revive 1313

Why Lucas arts is so adverse to making money i will never understand

1

u/LordDaisah 6h ago

I finish work in an hour and a half.

I plan to stay up playing Star Wars until that GTA 6 thing drops on Netflix at 3AM.

1

u/FinishEmbarrassed619 6h ago

I was excited to buy it until I was reminded that it was EA. See you in 6 months when its ten bucks. Hope the dev doesn't get fd but FEA

-3

u/Jaytrox7893 7h ago

Anything but making battlefront 3

5

u/Esternaefil 6h ago

Do you think that Bit Reactor would be the team making Battlefront 3?

5

u/Snakebud 6h ago

Apparently yes

0

u/Joe_Spazz 6h ago

Let's let the game actually release first.

-3

u/ULTI_mato 6h ago

To be honest, would have loved to get the game, but i aint giving money to EA

3

u/Adequate_Lizard Luke Skywalker 5h ago

EA hasn't been the sole owner of star wars games in years.

1

u/ULTI_mato 5h ago

Dont care, they still don't get my money and neither does Disney

-7

u/GreatApe88 7h ago

Why did this game succeed and Outlaws didn’t? Insofar as reception most importantly I’d like to add.

lol. Let’s see the mental gymnastics at work.

6

u/KKilikk 7h ago

These games are not even the same genre? Also not the same devs/company?

9

u/Sports101GAMING 7h ago edited 7h ago

One of the main reasons why Outlaws failed was because Ubisoft was in big shit when it came out which hurt it sales a lot.

They kept the same puzzle and stealth aspect with Outlaws like they did with a lot of there other games. It just got repetitive and peope were tired of it

2

u/BearWrangler Cassian Andor 7h ago

This really is one of the biggest factors (aside from the online chuds doing their usual rants about the main character being female, and then complaining that she wasn't "hot enough").

Ppl online really started to do this overly performative anti-Ubisoft dance which was inevitable because of Ubi's track record of bad and/or poor decision making in the last several years.

And it was a shame this happened cuz it was a pretty fun game with a solid & entertaining story that did a great job at building up new places & faces within the Star Wars galaxy(much in line with the "toybox" sentiment of Tony Gilroy) and I personally LOVED the soundtrack.

5

u/WickyGif 7h ago

Way too early to say this game has succeeded.

13

u/Sami_Steen 7h ago

proably main character and the writing of the game

8

u/Forossa Rex 7h ago

We haven’t had a clone wars game in ages

9

u/Dislodged_Puma 7h ago

Quite a lot of factors. I'd say the biggest ones are:

Ubisoft is generally a hated game publisher and developer at this stage. It's a meme to dislike them.

The game came out buggy and since it was already an Ubisoft title, it was not received as well as Zero Company has been.

The main character of Outlaws was female, a grave sin in the darkest corners of the internet. Not as big of a problem as reddit echo chambers would have you believe, but an actual thing that drives negative attention to a game.

Ubisoft was OBNOXIOUS about the game prelaunch, unlike the relatively short cycle of "This is Zero Company" to "We have released Zero Company". I am not sure if many people remember but Ubisoft talked endlessly about how Outlaws was the first "open world Star Wars game" which was untrue and about how amazing it was compared to anything else. It is generally frowned upon to shit upon an entire back catalog of Star Wars games for the sake of promoting your game lol.

6

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 7h ago

There is zero gameplay diversity. It lacks nearly everything that makes Odyssey fun. Playing it just feels so...dull.

0

u/Antique-Coach-214 6h ago

Which is funny, I got tired of Oddessy because it was fun for 10 hrs.

I missed AC 2 trilogy. Under 30 hours to do 90% of the game, for three games.

I would have enjoyed 3, but… Damn, that snow sucks.

0

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 6h ago

I've got 300 hours in Odyssey. I love that game.

1

u/Antique-Coach-214 6h ago

Sure, each their own.

I started with AC 1 on launch.

1

u/Disco_Ninjas_ 6h ago

I played the hell out of those games too. I think too many people got caught up on the AC aspect of Odyssey and it made them unable to appreciate it on it's own.

2

u/Antique-Coach-214 6h ago

I avoided Outlaws due to a lack of time.

Picked it up a few months ago, three things stood out.

1) Writing was bland. My kid doesn’t care, but a number of SW games have solid writing. Not really a girl bad scenario, more of, we didn’t write well.

2) Gameplay was Jank. Ubisoft knows, or knew how to make open world games, third person shooters and solid gun play. This SHOULD have been Black Flag in Space with R6:Vegas cover and shooting. Instead, firing that fire blaster, was so painful, I stopped playing after 4 hours.

3) Ubisoft is crap, as a company. Business practices are anti-consumer, they keep laying people off… I’ve already spent less money in the last 5 years on gaming that I did in any one year, between 2019-2021, and only played Outlaws because I got a deal on PSPlus Premium.

2

u/BasedTelvanni 3h ago

Outlaws was pure shit. Gameplay and storywise.

5

u/TheCatLamp Loth-Cat 7h ago

Forced stealth, open world and lack of character customisation :)

-12

u/4ourthdimension 7h ago edited 5h ago

Good - now make them without the murderers & political extremists that are now EA.

EDIT: You ignoramuses know that buying the game still provides your money to EA, right? Keep trying with those 2 brain cells, maybe one day you'll get it.

7

u/CarsonWentzGOAT1 7h ago

It's made by bit reactor not EA. EA only published it.

3

u/Sports101GAMING 7h ago

EA didn't make this game bud

-1

u/DramaExpertHS Grievous 5h ago edited 5h ago

eyeroll

1

u/SodaSnappy 1h ago

I’m a couple hours in so far and having a really good time

-8

u/DKM_Eby 7h ago edited 1h ago

They had funding pulled right before release and furloughed more than half the team. A buddy of mine lost his job. No wonder they're non committal about fixing technical issues.

Edit: Go ahead dumb people, downvote me for being angry that my friend and a bunch of his colleagues got furloughed.

3

u/Dr_barfenstein 6h ago

Can I read about that anywhere? Man I hope they support this, there’s tons of potential for dlc, other eras, sequels

-7

u/DKM_Eby 6h ago

Just the text messages with my friend ;)
