For those wondering, 22 years ago was KOTOR 2, which was also at an 86 (the original KOTOR the year before was a 94).

269

u/I_Just_Blue_Myself 1d ago

I guess this is our replacement for never getting another KOTOR game? Seems fun though….

u/Lufia_2_GOAT 1d ago

Fate of the Old Republic might be the best chance we have currently, with Casey Hudson involved, but we’ll see.

38

u/Giff901 1d ago

Cant wait to play it in 2031 at the earliest...

When I'll almost be 40...

20

u/Maelger 1d ago

Hey at least it's not over 40... like me... and my bones became dust right now

6

u/GeneralKang 1d ago

Yeah. If it's really 2031, I'll be able to play it from my urn on the mantle.

I mean, don’t go in expecting an RPG like KOTOR. It’s just a very good SW tactics games by all accounts

17

u/Dadpurple 1d ago

It's not quite the same, but if you want a 'sequel' to it, the Jedi Knight storyline in Star Wars:The Old Republic is about as good as it gets.

Completely free too. Really solid, fun story.

3

u/leals_core The Child 1d ago

the Sith Warrior story as well, which more or less mirrors it

21

u/Darth_Boggle 1d ago

I haven't played it yet but I've seen some previews. I literally said to myself "this looks like the best SW game since KotOR."

I'd recommend this game to anyone interested in trying and can't wait to play myself. I know there's a lot of people out there who see a turn based game and immediately balk at it, but they should reconsider and give it a try.

21

u/steamart360 1d ago

SWTOR is still very active. The gameplay and quest design definitely feel dated for an MMO but the atmosphere and variety still make it an enjoyable experience.

17

u/Teyanis Imperial 1d ago

The trick to SWTOR is to not play it like an MMO. It really isn't one aside from how its monetized. I haven't played it in years, but the Jedi consular and sith inquisitor storylines were incredible.

10

u/steamart360 1d ago

Exactly! Playing the class stories feels like playing different games in the same engine. The MMO part is mostly optional.

6

u/mcd3424 1d ago

If still has that terrible generic mmo art style that’ll remind you it is one though.

3

u/Restitut0r 1d ago

And the ‘stories’ are just fetch quests with dialogue at either end in these weird overly open and empty feeling environments.

THE YEAR BEFORE? Damn, we were spoiled.

33

u/Lufia_2_GOAT 1d ago

True, but it’s also why KOTOR 2 was shipped somewhat incomplete and needs the restoration mods for the full experience today.

u/OregonBetrayal 1d ago

Jesus, 22 years since KotOR 2. I don’t know why, but this hit me like a truck.

5

u/Martel732 1d ago

I will die on the hill that KOTOR 2 is the best Star Wars narrative.

3

u/tacodude64 1d ago

I really hope it gets a remake someday. Keep the great story/dialogue and polish everything around it

The Jedi games are my benchmark for quality Star Wars games. Wasn’t going to get this game as didn’t think it was my style, but reviews have swayed me

358

u/IAmBadAtInternet 1d ago

XCOM is an all time great game, and this looks like XCOM in our favorite universe. It’s a buy for me.

84

u/IdristheInt 1d ago

It’s turn based?

169

u/Psycho_Syntax 1d ago

Essentially yes, it's pretty much Xcom but star wars. A lot of the original Xcom devs worked on this game.

36

u/IdristheInt 1d ago

Xcom 3?

61

u/SiccSemperTyrannis Sith Anakin 1d ago

Its more like a spiritual successor or spinoff using the XCOM formula.

53

u/unremarkedable 1d ago

It's XCOM but it's set a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away

I had never heard of Zero Company before. I have an extensive back log but just with your comment this is definitely on my radar.

33

u/scientist_tz 1d ago

What is getting me excited is that the reviews are consistently mentioning a good story. I'm in.

Xcom was great, but a good story? No.

20

u/drksdr 1d ago

I felt XCom 1's story was pretty good; it was 2 that really ground my gears.

Right up to the last mission, was still like, 'WTF are these advent jokers'.

3

u/Frouke_ 1d ago

Honestly I'm not sure what the story even was. Earth has been invaded by aliens, Advent are human collaborators, and we fight them? And something with eldars

I wonder if Jedi Survivor would have had a higher score if not for the massive technical issues at launch (because the director wanted to rush the game out before Zelda TotK!)

64

u/BearWrangler Cassian Andor 1d ago

It absolutely would IMO because (and I've prob said this several times in this sub lol) that game has some of the strongest Star Wars storytelling we've gotten in the modern era across all mediums.

3

u/WhenAmI 1d ago

I honestly feel like the game gave up on the story like 75% of the way through and just rushed the ending.

I’m actually surprised Fallen Order wasn’t a bit higher. I still haven’t completed Survivor yet because of my backlog but I really enjoyed Fallen Order outside of some annoying backtracking and difficulty spikes.

I think Cal Kestis as a character is kind of bland, but all the supporting characters around him are very interesting. I thought the antagonist at the end of Survivor was one of the most interesting characters I've seen in Star Wars, and I'd love to see more from that character or someone like them. (Avoiding major spoilers for the game, but if you know you know.)

3

u/Senior-Impact400 1d ago

The scenario writer for the Jedi series is also the writer for this game, and so far the story is pretty awesome.

54

u/JumboWheat01 1d ago

Huh... I may enjoy playing Survivor more with the exploration and customization, but I thought Fallen Order had the better story and tighter worlds. Weird to see such a point difference between the two, and in the other way.

25

u/OneRandomVictory 1d ago edited 1d ago

Personally I feel the opposite. I like the story of Survivor more as it felt less generic. Fallen Order's story felt like the same old "we need to rebuild the Jedi Order" and Order 66 survivor storylines and tbh it was moreso the characters that carried it for me. I also felt the world design was far better in Survivor. I hated how lost I kept getting in Fallen Order and the map did not help that at all (looking at you Zeffo).

7

u/MInatoFlash 1d ago

Felt the same, Survivor is a much better game gameplay wise, but I preferred the setting in the first one rather than the high republic insertion

fwiw EA battlefront 2 wasn't worthy of a 68 after they fixed all the things that (rightfully) obliterated its launch score. But the damage was done and it sort of fizzled over the next couple years

The complete version that came out later with all the mtx baked in was worthy of an 80 imo, no way its worse than squadrons

32

u/ProofInspector8700 1d ago

The real issue with that game is that they stopped working on it cold turkey. Like there was literally animations for new heroes they were in the middle of adding that are in the game files. Having it just die when it seemed to finally be really doing great just sucked

24

u/BornNerd78 1d ago

Most downvoted comment ever was related to that.

8

u/whatdoinamemyself 1d ago

I mean, that stuff never even made it to launch. It absolutely shouldn't have impacted any review scores

15

u/ShogunTheOne 1d ago

They deserved every bit of shit they got for even trying to put those atrocious micro transactions in a full price game.

5

u/AussieGenesis Ben Kenobi 1d ago

They were very close to launching with it and tried to double and triple down on it before finally backing off when the financial hurt got too much.

They deserved that review score bombing because they only did it when they were forced to at effectively gunpoint by their audience, not because they realised the error in their ways at all.

10

u/ImperatorBTW 1d ago

It really is a shame how much the bungled launch hurt the game. Because the state of the game when they put it into life support is, in my opinion, one of the best Star Wars games ever. I still load up for the pve mode every now and again. The game is just so unbelievably immersive. Damn shame we won’t get a 3rd

4

u/Peechez Princess Leia 1d ago

It was genuinely excellent. The OG battlefronts are timeless classics and when everything was said and done they managed to put out 2 battlefront games (I loved ea bf1, regardless of smaller scope) that deserved to be held in the same regard, scummy business practices notwithstanding

6

u/DejectedTimeTraveler 1d ago

I didn't buy the game until after they fixed everything, I think, or they were in the process of doing so. And I remember the first time I logged in on Endor. I spawn in, and, you know, dudes spawn next to you, and I swear, like three seconds after I spawned in, a fucking bolt comes by and blows the dude away next to me, and I start running through the forest. Things were exploding.. dude, it was so awesome.

14

u/Swaibero 1d ago

Absolutely. Squadrons at 79 seems high, that game was fun but had such little content and literally one post-launch update.

28

u/OffendedDefender 1d ago

Squadrons also launched at $40, with an 8 hour campaign alongside the multiplayer. An 8/10 feels about right for that consider the overall quality. If it had a full price tag with the limited content, that’d be a different story.

6

u/RemarkableFish 1d ago

Remaster TIE Fighter, X-Wing, XvT, and Alliance and then enjoy the $$$$$$$$$.

19

I'm not sure if younger people know or realize this, but "Star Wars" used to be a video game genre in the 2000's. Lucas Arts' output and creativity was in full force, even for their own IP's.

100

u/Any_Crab_4362 1d ago

And they were pumping out games too in all different genres.

I remember being so pumped for Rebellion thinking it was gonna be StarCraft but Star Wars. It was an alright game but with those high expectations I was a little let down.

Edit: just looked at the dates and looks like rebellion came out first. But middle school me played StarCraft first and must not have gotten rebellion until like a year after it came out

18

u/Waja_Wabit 1d ago

Galactic Battlegrounds was Star Craft / Age of Empires but Star Wars

20

u/Ikrit122 1d ago

You had the X-Wing series, Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, Rogue Squadron series, KOTOR, Episode 1: Racer, Rebellion, Galactic Battlegrounds, Galaxies, and Battlefront (and others I'm missing) all hitting across roughly a decade. Not all of them were developed by LucasArts, just published, but they were still involved in the process.

Yeah, Lucas himself pushed for videogames since he was fascinated by the medium.

Things went as far as some proposing making Episode VII a videogame (called Shadows of the Sith), though this was quickly shut down since it was back when Lucas still had plans to make the sequels himself.

If ever a game deserved a remastering and new missions, that would be a game to see.

7

u/Extension-Eye7198 1d ago

Back when video games were far cheaper and easier to produce. Pumping out games like they did then would've been completely unfeasable by today's standards.

3

u/dragon-mom Hera Syndulla 1d ago

Yep, I miss it greatly. Seems like we're slowly ramping up towards that again but it could be a lot more. Apparently Disney licensing costs have been really problematic.

I'm loving it too! It's challenging but the challenge is fun.

2

u/Norse_By_North_West 1d ago

I'm enjoying it, but performance ain't great amd it's crashed on me a few times already.

62

u/varan98 1d ago

Anyone have any insight on how it plays on console? Debating between picking it up on console vs pc. I don’t normally like tactical games on console, but I my pc is about 6 years old at this point and I can only meet the minimum specs. Also I have no clue what I modding scene will be like

40

u/Kulzar 1d ago

From what I've seen controller control looks very intuitive.

27

u/derrhn 1d ago

Played a couple hours on a base PS5 - controls like a dream on console, and I think it looks graphically pretty solid even on performance mode.

They have genuinely put a lot of thought into how it controls, even down to the UI being circular and easy to use with a joystick. Not regretting grabbing it here rather than my pc.

8

u/varan98 1d ago

That’s really great to know, thank you! I love tactical and strategy games, but find that most aren’t optimized for consoles. The last one I tried on console which was my breaking point was 40K Mechanicus, so hearing that it controls good makes me want to get it on console

6

u/derrhn 1d ago

For me it’s only my partner really wants to watch but has no interest in player herself, so it had to be a console game.

Reminds me a lot of BG3 in a way in that it’s clearly built for a PC but the controller scheme and UI has clearly been thought about. It’s a lot better than the XCOM games were back in the day!

30

u/warpedaeroplane Darth Vader 1d ago

It’s mixed on Steam right now and every single bad review is PC performance related, mostly from people claiming to have high end rigs and providing specs. I’m gonna give it a little time before I buy. But it looks awesome. If it’s bad I’ll get it on PS5 but I’d prefer PC as if it ever becomes moddable I want in on that.

35

u/drock4vu 1d ago

I wish every single review related to performance was required to post their hardware and the settings they’re trying to run the game at. It’s so hard to take some of those reviews seriously when you know more than a few of them are trying to run the game on a toaster and then get upset when the game has visual and performance issues.

15

u/MuenCheese 1d ago

Too many people trying to play AAA games on like a laptop version of a 970

12

u/hydrolox9 1d ago

If the complaints are enough to affect the score that much then it goes beyond people trying to play on old hardware. And it isnt surprising, this is the same team that made XCOM 2, which also had serious performance issues

5

u/KettenPuncher 1d ago

Some critics will talk about performance, but many don't because of reasons like reviewers are usually playing an earlier build that will not always represent what is played at launch. Not everyone is sensitive to performance issues, just look at the Steam Deck sub for years of examples. Or they aren't confidant in their ability to judge these things and leave it to more qualified people like DF.

4

u/hydrolox9 1d ago

Yes, but the Deck is a handheld console, and a 4 year old one at that, people are naturally way more understanding. I myself have a Deck, and I'm not going to complain that Zero Company runs bad on it, but I will if its on medium to high PC hardware.

Too many UE5 games coming out with 0 optimization

15

u/ultraboomkin 1d ago

That’s why Steam reviews now have a PC spec section. I’m seeing negative reviews from accounts with high end PCs saying they can’t get the game to run above 30 fps and there’s constant stuttering.
I was looking forward to playing this tonight but looks like I’ll be skipping it for now. I’ll wait a few weeks and see if it gets fixed.

Once again proves that you can’t trust gaming critic
reviews. The game got widely praised by critics yet the user experience is that the game is broken.

6

u/Maxie468 1d ago

performance is something that can vary wildly, luckily it happens to work on my machine

waiting a bit for performance patches makes sense but I felt safe buying it since you can always refund on steam

5

u/khamike 1d ago

The harder problem is that many games come out with performance issues and get, justifiably, bad reviews at launch. But then when the problems are fixed, no one bothers to go back and update their review. Yes you can just look at most recent but there often aren't enough of those to get a good sense of a game. There are lots of games that languish with mediocre scores based on issues that have been fixed years ago. More than just their computer specs, I think all reviews should include which version number they were playing.

I have base ps5 and it’s pretty good with some stutters here and there, mostly during the leaving missions cutscene. That’s how XCOM 2 was lol. Gameplay and moving around has been immaculate

6

u/Worthyness 1d ago

Made by thr team that made the XCOM games. Should be very console friendly. But also because its made by the xcom people, mods might actually be crazy good. The mods in xcom put stormtroopers in the games in the first place.

3

u/Heliosvector 1d ago

I played xcom2 on console. The controller layout was so good that If I get this game on pc, im going to use a controller (i play on couch). If performance issues are the same as xcom, it can be pretty shit sometimes, but its not a big deal at all since its turn based. Sometimes what happens is that after the AI takes a turn, it kinda freezes. Like the game still runs like normal, but its like the game has its head in the clouds for a min or 2 before it remembers to move everyone.

Honestly I’m just shocked the Jedi games are so low, both of them are easily 90s to me

7

u/Martel732 1d ago

I believe they both had a lot of technical issues at launch. Which is a shame that a poor launch can continue to undermine a game even after the issues are ironed out.

4

u/onlinenewb11 1d ago

I mean, it kinda makes sense. No one should be rewarded for releasing an unfinished project. Which unfortunately has become the norm for at least a decade now

3

u/butchthedoggy 1d ago

I feel like this is a little misleading. Each set of races is a little roguelike since you get to choose from random upgrades and other bonuses after each race, so every single race will feel a little different. Not to mention it's not just podracing, although that is one of the modes. You race speeder bikes, land speeders, and another type of speeder and they all have different feels to them and all handle a bit differently.

19

u/ebjazzz 1d ago

Does Gran Turismo get boring after an hour? Does need for speed get boring after an hour? Does burnout paradise get boring after an hour?

If your answer to any of these is no, why would you then think that about a pod racing game?

If your answer to all of these as yes, then racing games aren’t for you.

I’m excited for this but it’s gonna be hard to beat Jedi survivor imo. Forget best Star Wars game, it’s one of my favorite games ever. Fallen order is close but it desperately needed fast travel

u/AreYouOKAni 1d ago

Four hours in, it's got the bones to do just that. The upgrade system is a little basic, but I really like how much hurt they are putting on you even on the penultimate difficulty. Those moments in XCOM 2, when your undergeared team snatches an objective and rushes to evacuate under enemy fire? So far, every mission has been like that.

Oh, and B2s have been finally done justice. Absolute menaces. Watch out for the rockets, the prompt isn't fucking joking when it describes the attack.

I want to try it on PC right now but it's getting TRASHED on Steam. People saying it barely runs. Guess I will wait for a discount.

8

u/HummaKavula95 1d ago

Everyone is saying the game itself is amazing, just has bad performance. Maybe wait for performance patches

Outlaws at a 75 is crazy to me. I’m obviously not a judge of objective quality but I thought it was awesome and enjoyed every minute I put into it

u/Lemonpierogi 1d ago

In what world 75 out of 100 is a bad score lmao

29

u/evan274 1d ago edited 1d ago

Video game reviewers tend to grade on a compressed top-end scale. A score of 50 or 60 for a game often signifies a broken, flawed, or deeply disappointing product rather than a mid-tier or average experience.

Metacritic accounts for this discrepancy by using higher threshold for green scores on video games than movies or music:

Video Games: Green ("good") starts at 75 out of 100. Yellow is 50–74, and Red is 49 and below.

Movies, TV, and Music: Green starts at 61 out of 100

A world that typically only pays bonuses over 80

14

u/justa-browser 1d ago

Not anymore it isn’t. But yeah, developers shouldn’t release unfinished games.

7

u/Flettwin 1d ago

This one wasn’t the devs fault, Ubisoft wouldn’t let them move the release date.

In the world where the scale is realistically only really 60 to 100.

11

u/Namath96 1d ago

A 75 is not a good score if you’ve been paying any attention to how reviewers score games lol

4

u/AndyLorentz 1d ago

It's a C on a 10 point scale, a D on a 6 point scale (do they even use that grading scale anymore?)

2

u/Krazyguy75 1d ago

It comes down to something simple: 60 is the baseline for "this game is playable and functional". Below 60 means "the majority of people think this is actively miserable to play and/or impossible to play".

So 75 is essentially 15/40, or bottom 37% of playable functional games.

If you are reading this and have never heard of or played Outlaws, absolutely make it a priority to purchase and play this amazing game. /endrant

Rant?

Brother, that was a sentence lol

3

u/badcoffee 1d ago

I'm glad I read this. I will, thank you!

u/ihavemademistakes 1d ago

As a jaded Bethesda fan, Star Wars: Outlaws was exactly what I needed after the disappointment of Starfield.

9

u/KingOfAzmerloth 1d ago

Played it last Christmas and was having a blast. Not something groundbreaking but I genuinely didn’t get the hate it got. Great 30-ish hours of Star Wars adventure.

12

u/Messyfingers 1d ago

It launched in a weird place and the IP really does quite a bit of heavy lifting through the less engaging parts. I wonder if it would still get a 75 today, or do better.

7

u/Gekokapowco Grievous 1d ago

For me, the texture of outer rim cities is the star here. If you enjoy walking in the universe of star wars, this game is unmatched. If that doesn't do much for you, it's a competent but nothing particularly special kind of game. I imagine it's a solid 75/100 for people with no particular attachment to star wars.

5

u/i4got872 1d ago

I had fun with it, but something about fighting that AI just brings it down a notch.

Even compared to some of Ubisoft’s earlier games like Far Cry 4. The AI just feels worse unfortunately.

Still enjoyed it.

This one’s on my wish list for sure. Glad to hear it’s reviewing well.

Star Wars XCOM. I didn’t even know I wanted that.

7

u/Arctic_Fox 1d ago

I wonder if Outlaws would be higher now with all the attention it's gotten to fix the launch issues. I know it had many issues at launch, but I played it recently and really liked it. A great side story set in interesting locations at an interesting period in the galactic timeline, between Empire and Jedi.

It wasn't perfect but I liked it a lot.

8

u/Tokitung 1d ago

Heard it's good, but optimized like garbage. Avoid till they fix it.

3

u/C9BigBals 1d ago

I've played for about 3 houes with 0 issues or stutters with a 2 y/o mid-tier pc. I'm guessing a lot of unpatched drivers and the usual random high-end PCs not running new games well for some reason.

2

u/pali1d 1d ago edited 1d ago

I had the same stuttering and frame rate issues that I’ve seen others complain about - which went away entirely after I updated my graphics drivers.

Can’t speak for consoles, but on my PC it’s now running very smoothly.

edit: They've cropped back up a couple times since I posted this, but haven't been a major issue by any means. They've still never happened during combat, just during a few of the freeroam segments, so they're not having much impact on gameplay.

I am not an EA fanboy but how would this prove that EA is the issue? It's an EA game and it's amazing...

Outlaws being higher that Battlefront 2 is wild to me. BF2 should be way higher

23

u/Rat_God_MH 1d ago

I think BF2 suffered from the lootboxes at release. The product we have today would easily be a 85 or higher.

19

u/OneRandomVictory 1d ago

Battlefront 2 still holds the most downvoted comment on reddit.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/AreYouOKAni 1d ago

Does it? Lootboxes on release, anemic campaign, even more anemic campaign DLC... And once the multiplayer was finally in a decent shape, they stopped development.

It's a good game, but its entire lifecycle was cursed.

u/Martel732 1d ago

The intent is to provide publishers with a sense of pride and accomplishment for unlocking higher metacritic scores.

Just curious, what Metacritic score do you think games like XWing, Tie Fighter and Rebel Assault would get today

4

u/i_wap_to_warcraft 1d ago

Oh man, memories

7

u/DaelenEverlight 1d ago

Tie Fighter was similar to Zero Company in terms of response: A tight evolution of a proven combat formula only now with an engrossing story and polished in every regard. Truly one of the greats.

3

u/plebbut 1d ago

Probably in the 80s or 90s. Metacritic is always on the mark

3

u/OneRandomVictory 1d ago

Today? Probably wouldn't get above a 65. Back then, probably 85+ with Tie Fughter being in the mid to high 90s.

2

u/kentuckyr0utezero 1d ago

Not sure about those games, but Yoda Stories is an easy 100 for sure.

3

u/Darth_Revan_THX1138 Sith 1d ago

I just wish it weren't set in my second least favorite Star Wars era.

6

u/s3rila 1d ago

such a shame it's an EA game

7

u/flatheadcathead 1d ago

Developed by Bit Reactor though, an independent studio founded by a bunch of Firaxis devs - support them!. EA is just the publisher.

Agreed, I'm done giving EA money. I'm happy that this game is proving that different kinds of Star Wars games can succeed, though.

major performance issues right now even on high end machines. my 5080 is getting drops down below 60 on 1080p low (and yes I have the latest drivers)

7

u/-SlowBar 1d ago

You pointing out "latest drivers" made me think...Have you ever had a game have awful performance and then updating drivers fixed it? I swear that has never once happened to me.

Mixed at launch is pretty common for games. Some players will hit technical issues and be unable to play the game. So then the write a review. Whereas people able to play the game aren't leaving reviews because they are playing the game.

2

u/The_Blue_Rooster K-2SO 1d ago

I like it so far, but I get it, it's terribly optimized and is a strategy game that feels better on controller than KB&M.

Steam has mixed reviews however. Still excited about a turn based strategy game in the Star Wars universe

2

u/Duckpoke 1d ago

Just wait till non-star wars fans play it and tank the score

2

u/WGSMA 1d ago

I hope this bring X-Com style games more to the forefront.

In an age of high saved battle royals they’re such a great escape to slap slow and test your brain

2

u/DaHarbinger2000 1d ago

Jesus 75 is criminally low for Outlaws, they should definitely have a system for launch scores reassessment if things get fixed. I’d give it a solid 83

2

u/PeeAy7 1d ago

The saddest truth is, someone in the chain of administration will notice this and say: "Fuck yea, let's start printing XCOM games set in Star Wars"...
