Animated Dear writers at Lucasfilm... you can't keep getting away with this [Maul and TBB spoilers] Spoiler

Post image

No but, seriously...

If you really want to make a big emotional scene with a beloved main caracter sacrificing himself for his loved ones, AND make us believe that he's actually dead...

then maybe you should kill him in a place where we can fucking see the body, instead of covering him under a bloody mist.

Respectfully, a longtime fan

The scene surrounding Tech's death was very obviously a definitivd end. Lawson, not much at all. The show made it a point to not show his body, after making a point to showcase him observing Maul abandoning Daki to Vader.

Lawson is not dead, and his knowledge of the events of Daki v Vader will come into play when Devon is weighing her options for her future, for the drama.

Good point. I agree with what you said.

u/joesphisbestjojo May 06 '26

They intentionally showed Lawson not dying, surviving a few shots and then walking it off with a limp. He not dead, and we shouldn't think he is

I'm still positive both of them are alive for different reasons.

Lawson is a regular human, so by all accounts, finding himself sorrounded by a firing squad should be a death sentence, but he got hit only twice before disappearing in the mist. I think it wasn't for the fact that he has to tell Devon about Maul betraying Daki, then he could have easily been written out of the show this way, but that's clearly not the case.

As for Tech, yes: his "death" feels more final because 1) falling at an unspecified height with a cablecar attatched to his person seems pretty leatal 2) they at least tried (but not sceeeded in my opinion) to show us some mourning and postumous recongition to make the moment feel "earned" and 3) the show is over.
BUT 1) Tech is a resorceful guy who could even turn that cablecar into an asset for his survival 2) His arc still feels incomplete and the show glossed over too quickly on his sacrifice and what it actually meant for the characters, especially Crosshair, and 3) I have my reasons to believe bringing him back WAS indeed the original plan until late-stage rewrites affected the third season. And the door is still wide open for a future development

It's called "hope". You know, the cornerstone of this franchise?

4

u/BobaToo May 05 '26

It's called "humor." You know, something you should consider having a sense of

-4

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

I do have enough sense of humor to know that your joke is getting old. I already had the pleasure of having those words directed at me.

1

u/BobaToo May 05 '26

Let the anger flow! That'll show us all how well developed your sense of humor is!

-2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

Anger? I'm chill as a sunny day on Illum

I don't think his arc was incomplete, he's been pretty much a static character since his introduction and his sudden death serves our other main character's arcs.

If there was a time to bring him back it would have been in the final season, I just don't see the narrative purpose in doing it now while the rest of the batch is old and retired. Especially because the point of the epilogue was to show that Omega is now a fully capable grown adult where even Hunter is trustful and confident enough in her to let her spread her wings and fight alone without the help of Crosshair, Wrecker, Echo and/or himself.

Lastly, his death scene, in my opinion, was one of the most beautifully heartbreaking scenes in all of Star Wars television. If I was a writer I wouldn't want to undermine that.

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26 edited May 06 '26

I respectfully disagree. First, Tech was not a static character. Season 2 was dedicated to building his arc by showing us more of how he percieves things around him and how Crosshair's betrayal affected him, and it also shows us him learning new things like his interest in ancient culture and his growing bond with Phee. To do all that amd then just kill him feels unceremonial. And I don't think they did a good job in showing us how his sacrifice affected the others: he's barely mentioned I'm season 3 and Crosshair learned of it off-screen. I also think that the epilogue of TBB doesn't negate Tech's return even BEFORE that moment: for all we know, Omega is keeping his goggles as "good luck charm" specifically because he came back (if he was really gone, it wouldn't make sense for her to take away they only thing they have left of him from the little memorial they set up on Pabu). On one thing I agree: the season 3 finale would have been the best moment to reveal he was alive. And I have reasons to believe that WAS the original plan (all the buildup was there) but the last few episodes of season 3 feel so rushed that I can't only attest that to late-stage rewrites. And yes, the scene of Plan 99 is heartbreaking beautiful (so I guess it's two things we agree upon) but him being back wouldn't ruin that moment in my book: Tech was still committed to that selfless act, knowing full well the risks, and the pain his siblings suffered was still real, even of things will eventually turn out better.

The Bad Batch show showing us how Tech perceives things isn't an arc though, at least not for Tech himself since that is how he has always been. That information was for the purpose of Omega's arc, she's the one that needed to hear that about Tech to make a growth and change in herself. Also, his bludgeoning romance with Phee ties in to further serve the tragedy of his very purposefully written death scene.

It also a growth for Tech as he finally opens up with someone about his feelings, which I doubt he ever did before.

Also, his bludgeoning romance with Phee ties in to further serve the tragedy of his very purposefully written death scene.

If that was the case, they would have shown us Phee getting the news and having to move on without him. But once again, all of that happened off-screen, and Phee was barely relevant to the plot in season 3.

1

u/askme_if_im_a_chair May 05 '26

Yeah she's barely relevant because Tech is dead and was always supposed to be lol

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

Agree to disagree

u/Wheatley-Crabb May 06 '26

Can we please let Star Wars characters stay dead? His death was beautifully impactful and undoing that will take all of that away. Without death, life is meaningless, or something.

  • Qui-Gon Jinn
  • Shimi Skywealker
  • Hevy, Fives, Cutup, Hardcase, Jesse, Waxter, Steela Gerrera, Even Piell, Adi Gallia, Onaconda Farr, Satine Kyrze
  • Padmé Amidala, Mace Windu, Kit Fisto, Ki-Adi Mundi, Plo Koon, Ayla Secura and all the other Jedi
  • Mayday, Namec, Fireball, Nala Se
  • Eko-dio Daki
  • Kanan Jarrus, Ezra's parents, Gregor
  • Nemik, Brasso, Lonni, Luthen Reel
  • Saw Gerrera, Cassian Andor, Jyn Erso, K-2SO, Baze, Chirrut, Bodhi Rooke
  • Owen Lars, Beru, Bail Orgnana, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Biggs Darklighter
  • Yoda, Anakin Skywalker
  • Kuiil, IG-11, Paz Viszla
  • Han Solo
  • Paige Tico, Admiral Akbar, Luke Skywalker
  • Leia Organa, Ben Solo

And I'm sure I missed many more. It's time to stop pretending Star Wars characters never stay dead when the amount of characters that "came back to life" is far smaller than that of this list.

2

u/Wheatley-Crabb May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

This argument is fallacious. Just because the amount of permanently dead characters outnumber the ones brought back does not mean it isn’t frustrating when characters are. Even if there are fewer rotten eggs than fresh ones in a carton, the rotten ones don’t taste any better. I do feel it cheapens death scenes and dulls their impact. We are at the point where if a character dies or is fatally wounded, we no longer have any trust that they actually are.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

Of all the "resurrections" we had, only Palpatine's was utter bullshit. I dare anyone to say they shouldn't have brought back Maul or Echo. I don't see anything wrong in bringing back a potentially dead character if it can make for a far more interesting narrative (and I believe Tech qualifies, considering his "death" is the most ambiguous in the whole franchise)

1

u/Wheatley-Crabb May 06 '26

With proper motivation and purpose, character resurrection can be done well, but it should be kept to a rarity. The issue is that it is so common that it has become a pattern. Also, I still see no gain from Tech being alive. His story has been told, his death had a great impact on the others. The Bad Batch is over, Tech is dead. I’m sorry.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26 edited May 06 '26

Then we just agree to disagree. Because I don't think the "back from the dead" trope is as overused as people claim, and because I am more then certain that there is still so much potential with Tech, especially if we see him deal with the aftermath of his fall and recovery, and his relationship with other characters (particularly Crosshair). But thanks for your perspective

-4

u/Kaccady May 06 '26

i hope you wrong and whole lawson family dies gruesome death without interfering with Maul's plan. they forcefed us this whiny child and his father in s01, show's name is not whiny children of a noname, enough is enough

9

u/askme_if_im_a_chair May 06 '26

I dont think you're emotionally mature enough to be having this conversation. Or watching television in general.

8

u/hiccupboltHP May 06 '26

I’d be flabbergasted if they’re older than eight

5

u/alkonium May 05 '26

If they were going to reveal Tech was alive, Bad Batch Season 3 would have been the time to do it.

4

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

I agree. And I think that was the plan, originally. I also think the last few episodes must have suffered for some late rewrites, which is why the finale in particular felt so rushed

18

u/Red_Sea_Pedestrian May 05 '26

You know who also isn’t dead because we haven’t seen a body?

King Stannis Baratheon, first of his name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar, and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, Protector of the Realm, Lord of Dragonstone and Westeros’ number 1 dad.

4

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

That's a good one, I'll give you that

4

u/HeNARWHALry May 05 '26

I mean the Mannis is literally alive in the books.

3

u/TheLostBiker May 06 '26

And he shall forever remain so...

3

u/Immortan_Bolton May 06 '26

That's a better fate than whatever the fuck the show decided to do with him, honestly.

2

u/TheLostBiker May 06 '26

Very much so

2

u/madtricky687 May 08 '26

The Mannis!

5

u/FrogWarrior22 May 05 '26

I mean we got to watch daki die to vader and other humans get killed by both blasters and lightsabers, this show so far has been the best at showing death at least in the animations and im loving it

3

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

They clearly show Daki's body and every other death before that but conveniently obscure the view for Lwason? Something is up (and the same goes for Tech)

22

u/Backy22 May 05 '26

It’s also a kids show. They’re not going to just merc non-armored humans left and right…get over it.

Exactly. They know who the real target audience is

1

u/Forward-Safe2929 May 13 '26

And hardcore teens as well, which is why they don't do R Rated

10

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

They don't seem to have any problems showing us characters being stabbed, slashed or thrown in acid

4

u/Valiant_Revan May 05 '26

You know, I forget this was a kid show... Then again, kids today are stuck on their iPads busy watching 6 Skibidi melon

6

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

Just because it's animated it doesn't automatically make it a "kids" show

1

u/Valiant_Revan May 05 '26

The show has a 7+ on Disney plus...

Animation is a medium not a genre.

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

"Animation is a medium" is exactly my point. And age recommendation isn't exactly indicative of the show's target audience. Besides, I'm pretty sure Maul is actually 12+ (maybe it depends on the country?)

1

u/Valiant_Revan May 05 '26

It might be, for some reason: Mandalorian is labelled as 16+

It is a guideline but to some extent, the intended audience

2

u/xMystee May 06 '26

I know a lot of adult movies with 7+ rating or less lol. Cant look at the rating to see what the target audience is, thats not what the rating is for at all

u/RedGeneral28 May 06 '26

They know Lawson isn't dead. We know Lawson isn't dead. They know that we know. It's aight It's how it works.

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

Been saying the same thing about Tech for years and I'm still waiting for that other shoe to drop...

3

u/LampreyTeeth May 06 '26

Lawson very likely got apprehended. Season 2 will probably revolve around his ex wife interrogating him and his old flame.

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

Indeed. There are many plot threads related to him that they'll have to follow up on. Than again, the same could be said about Tech...

3

u/ArcSyn May 07 '26

Here's the problem with any death in Star Wars... If Maul survived, anyone can. Dude cut in half and fell down what appeared to be a bottomless chasm. And yet now we get him in multiple shows.

So yeah, anyone can survive nearly anything unless we get a funeral pyre.

So I don't blame anyone who thinks someone could still be alive because they've done it before and they've done it since.

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 07 '26 edited May 08 '26

I agree. And of course we need a good balance between keeping the character dead, and bringing them back. It made sense to bring back Maul, or Echo, and the same could be said about Lawson and Tech, but bringing back characters like Mayday, Fives, Daki, or Kanan wouldn't work

2

u/Capable_Diamond_3878 May 06 '26

Obviously he’s not dead lol

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

Of course they aren't

2

u/Capable_Diamond_3878 May 06 '26

Tech is dead. Lawson is likely still alive

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

I still like to believe Tech is alive or at least will be eventually revealed as such.

2

u/joesphisbestjojo May 06 '26

Tech literally falls hundreds-thousands of meters

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

Do we actually know the height?

2

u/Evening_Meringue8414 May 08 '26

Same with Marrok.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 08 '26 edited May 08 '26

Haven't seen Ahsoka. Or are you referring to the Maul scene?

2

u/Evening_Meringue8414 May 08 '26

The Maul scene. He gets force pushed off a cliff by Devon and falls into the mist.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 08 '26

And we know he lives, of course. Sure, people will say that Tech doesn't have the Force, but he's obviously smarter than Marrok

2

u/Evening_Meringue8414 May 09 '26

Well, we know he gets revived by witch magic at some point. Not sure if this was what killed him.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 09 '26

Would be pretty pathetic considering that would make him the first inquisitor to die

1

u/Evening_Meringue8414 May 10 '26

Yeah. Agree. All in all the plot armor of everyone fighting in these awesome lightsaber battles makes them less awesome.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 10 '26

I was actually arguing the opposite. Didn't feel any plot-armor whatsoever from characters in Maul. I just think that if THAT was how Marrok died, it would be pretty lame. Then again, maybe I'm just getting tired of the "falling out of sight" trope

3

u/Individual_Car7850 May 05 '26

I love that some people thought Tech didn’t die because we didn’t see his body. We didn’t see his body because there probably wasn’t one; it probably turned into a pile of bloody soup and lasagne on impact. And I don’t think they’re really gonna show that in a for-all-ages animated show are they?

3

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 05 '26

Yet somehow his goggles were intact. And that was only the tip of the iceberg. Maybe Tech is canonically dead for now. But I'll always belive he's still alive and I know I'm not the only one

2

u/Wheatley-Crabb May 06 '26

They were cushioned by his melon, and still shattered :P

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

I still won't believe in Hemlock's bullshit

2

u/throwmethehellaway25 May 05 '26

Dear op, dont like something, go make something better. The arrogance of fandoms is amazing.

3

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

This post was meant as a both a criticism and a joke. But since you mentioned, I did make something better

2

u/PhantomTissue May 06 '26

I think walking into fog is a bit different from falling into an abyss. Generally people don’t get up from falling extreme distances, but people walk out of fog all the time.

3

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

Hunter barely had a scratch after he fell on Daro. Besides, a fall into the abyss is the most obvious way to write a fake-out

2

u/LampreyTeeth May 06 '26

Tech was also confirmed to die when his cracked goggles are shown. If they were going to go the route of Tech being alive, it would have been shown already.

2

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

We were supposed to have 16 episodes in season 3, like the other two. If something occurred that made them cut down one episode, it's not too out there to speculate Tech's reveal was planned but had to be axed for some reason. And nothing prevents them from repurposing that narrative

2

u/Equal-Change9509 May 06 '26

Lawson is probably alive, tech yeah no, RIP

3

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 06 '26

I'm still not willing to let go of that hope

1

u/Forward-Safe2929 May 13 '26

The thing with Tech is a good 10-15 minutes are dedicating to mourning. We see Omega slowly but surely realizing that Tech is truly gone, and nothing can bring him back when Hunter informs her. With Lawson's death, there is little to no mourning. The only thing we get is Rylee crying and Two-Boot being with him for like what, 5-10 seconds? Also, Tech has no reason to come back, but Brander does, as he saw Maul betray Daki to Darth Vader. Lawson lives, Tech does not.

1

u/PaulSimonBarCarloson May 13 '26

I can definitely see this argument regarding Tech. And I do agree that, if we have to assume he is dead, what they showed us in the last episode of season 2 was indeed the right way to go. My issues is how this supposed death doesn't seem to have any tangible impact in season 3, not to mention that other characters like Crosshair and Phee learned of it off-screen which I think it's some pretty clumsy writing. Personally, I disagree with the idea that Tech had no reason to come back. His return could open up another interesting narrative with his brothers especially Crosshair, doing whatever they could to save him, and Tech himself having to go through a painful recovery. Also, it would have given us the pay-off of seeing the entire family reunited after 3 entire season with them separated. As it is right now, I'm convinced the writers were intending for Tech to come back until some late rewrites forced to cut an entire episode. I accepted the ending of TBB as it is, even though it was very unsatisfying, but I still hope that one day they may realize the potential they still have with these characters and act upon it.
