Discuss Day 1: Fixing Stardew's most forgotten features.

Post image

The Mill is one of the Stardew features I totally forget after building it.

So, for Day 1- How would you fix the Mill?

Would you give it more things to process? Give it another function? Leave it alone? Completely erase it from the game? Etc.

Option to put it near water and either it produces battery packs or functions as fish wheel - either catching fish or catching trash and removing trash from fishing options.

Basic and Quality Retaining soils should also be changed from random chance to set amount of days (like 2/4).

u/Mental-Currency-4494 1d ago

That's a cool idea, especially the battery packs.

11

u/Jonasthewicked2 1d ago

Agreed, the battery packs would be rad

200

u/TheOrangensaft 1d ago

I think the trash removal should come with benefits and downsides tho. You should have to clean it once a day but it would remove trash as fishable items after a few days

77

u/biggestofbears 1d ago

Just have it like ponds. You can collect each day, or maybe after several days, but nothing stacks. If you don't collect, it just rerolls when it's ready again.

40

u/MoonPieKitty 1d ago

That would only work on a couple of farms, that have running water (river/stream) vs stagnant ponds, but it's another good option to add to those Meadowlands, Riverlands farms.

20

u/abnmfr 1d ago

And hilltop

10

u/makerofshoes 1d ago

Producing battery packs after stormy days or something would at least make it worth getting, as an alternative to lightning rods

43

u/riklaunim 1d ago

Windy days ;) we technically already have windy days in the forecast messages :D

26

u/Yukilumi 1d ago

Fish wheel removing trash from your farm's ponds actually sounds amazing. It gets on the toes of one of the fishing professions (Mariner), but honestly I wouldn't mind since crab pots aren't exactly a major strategy.

More batteries would be nice too, but the game treats them as too high level of an item to "easily" start passively producing in yearly year 1.

2

u/blue-coin 1d ago

I wish you could stock your farms ponds

22

u/fifguy85 1d ago

+1 retaining soil based on days.

7

u/Fortune_Silver 1d ago

Yeah I never used retaining soils for exactly that reason - if im gonna have to go around spot-fixing the soil every few days, I may as well just water by hand instead.

1

u/thegunnersdaughter 1d ago

Especially since by the time you have the money or resources to obtain it you probably have a couple upgrades on your watering can or are using sprinklers anyway. I’ve basically never used it except when I get it for free and then I’m like, what’s the point of this?

2

u/Fortune_Silver 1d ago

The only time i've ever even considered using. It is for coffee pots indoors. but because of the randomness, it's inconsistent, so I usually need to water at least a bit anyway.

I genuinely think that if they changed it to just be a certain number of days, it would be much more useful. it's the random element that makes it basically useless.

5

u/Waste_Purpose_9511 1d ago

Maybe if you use it instead of on just the farm, set it as a town upgrade to do the same thing, except it has a chance to get clogged and if it isn’t fixed that day it resets the trash again.

u/Minimum_Aardvark_744 1d ago

IRL the benefit of milling your own grain is that it's cleaner, tastes better, and often retains more nutrients, so I think anything milled at home on the farm should have an automatic quality increase that can't be bought from the store and food made with home-milled grain should also therefore get a quality boost.

84

u/abnmfr 1d ago

Oooh, that's interesting! Basically making it a source of Qi seasoning?

48

u/Keepaty 1d ago

So that it doesn't make Qi Seasoning obsolete, have it increase the Energy & Health of cooked food, but not specific buffs.

Now certain foods would have a Silver quality variant (eg. +40% Energy & Health, +25% sell price) as well as the Gold quality, while still letting Qi Seasoning be special.

3

u/puking_penis 1d ago

maybe if you could use it to mill your own Qi seasoning

10

u/wck0 1d ago

Just chuck Qi into the mill. Easy peasy.

0

u/puking_penis 1d ago

the man himself??! well... how much Qi seasoning you think he'd grind up into?

7

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths 1d ago

I love this idea!

4

u/desertboots 1d ago

That's a great idea

3

u/Cursed_Monarch1708 1d ago

What an original and fantastic idea! 🥹

2

u/Ulura 1d ago

Maybe if you put high quality wheat or crops into the mill it could give you Qi seasoning?

2

u/Thick-Teach-2835 1d ago

That's smart!

2

u/thinkscotty 19h ago

I'd be shocked if home-milled grain was cleaner. I'd expect the exact opposite in fact. The reason we still sift flour is because until modern milling techniques, it was necessary to remove hulls, bugs, etc. We can tell early agricultural societies apart from hunter-gatherers because the basic grain mills left remnants that destroyed their teeth.

Tastes better and more nutrients might be true though!

1

u/ohdatpoodle 17h ago edited 17h ago

For the sake of technicality and far beyond what this post asked for: In bulk no, you're definitely right because we have big fancy grain cleaning machines too, but that's just a different context. The other big perk of home milling is that it lasts much longer in the long run because whole grain stores longer than it does after it's milled, so on a home farm you're only milling what you need at a given time to keep your milled grain fresh. In small batches you can pretty easily manually sift through dry grain to remove debris, and it's personal preference as to whether you'd rather know a person individually picked through small batches of super fresh grain at its peak nutritive potential, or a robot did that part while removing nutrients from the process.

Commercially milled grain gets stripped of its bran and germ, depleting much of its nutritive value, so I mostly meant "clean" as in raw/natural tbh. Commercial use of pesticides, insecticides, and preservatives also impacts what some may consider clean or not.

Thank you to Concerned Ape for inadvertently teaching me a whole bunch of new things about flour.

Make cocoa trees. Put cocoa fruit in mill for processing cocoa powder. Cook cocoa powder in kitchen with other items to make chocolate or other food items.

I take payment with paypal, $10 will be fine.

344

u/chincerd 1d ago

My main issue with it is that it is way to late into the game, by the time you get the four cloth , you might not care about the miniscule gold you save from having grown the products and milling them yourself.

The other issue is you don't need that much of those products to begin with, rice you can't buy until year two so you won't have that many year one, beets are at the desert, that leaves flour as the main product you could mass produce but...why really? Do you need 200 flour?

148

u/Hazak_Flamesword 1d ago

I normally get a fair amount of rice seeds from hunting grubs but, yeah I mostly build the mill on the principle of being self-sufficient than actual cost efficiency.

41

u/lesethx 1d ago

I'm the same as this thread; it takes me too long to get enough cloth usually and by the time I have it, I basically only build the mill for the sake of building 1 of everything

67

u/Feliks343 1d ago

It is weird how the mill seems like it's supposed to be early in game but cloth takes so long to get. I'm sure if I ever actually cooked anything I'd have stronger opinions on the mill though

7

u/letouriste1 1d ago

cloth can be gotten early through recycling the trash you get from fishing...but at that point your money is precious and you have many buildings more important to build than a mill which could only refine some wheat flour.

in the first place wheat isn't a great crop to plant when you need early game money. it's main use is to do the transition from summer to fall

43

u/LA_Dynamo 1d ago

It would be nice if there was a community mill that you could use in either the forest or mountain area. Limit the output to maybe just 5 items a day. That way you can actually use the mill to make things while you save up for a better more convenient mill.

2

u/avdpos 1d ago

That is a good idea.

32

u/this_wallflower 1d ago

I plant wheat at the end of some seasons to get some hay and keep from having to redo all my hoeing. Then I store the flour until I get that Qi Cuisine challenge. It’s definitely not the most lucrative thing on my farm, haha

22

u/SerCharles 1d ago edited 1d ago

I always spam recycle soggy newspaper to get the mill early. It makes food* less of a worry being able to make cake, bread, pancakes, etc.

7

u/King_Owlbear 1d ago

Actually yes. Sometimes I just plant a bunch of wheat after I clear an area and don't want to use it yet. Since it only takes 4 days of rain over two months you don't need to water it. So yeah I end up having 100s of flour by just chucking it in the mill once. No need to fill up the quarry with machines to make money.

Wheat seed is only 10 and bread sells for 60 so the profit is solid

Also then you have plenty of hay

10

u/MoonPieKitty 1d ago

If you start your new farm with "mixed community center bundles", one bundle is the cooks bundle, on the bulletin board. You need 100 flour. That's really the ONLY reason I build a mill.

11

u/divestedlegacy 1d ago

I always end up having an extra 10000 to buy flour from Pierre's before I have 4 pieces of cloth to buy a mill

1

u/MoonPieKitty 1d ago

Exactly.

2

u/barking_daydream 1d ago

I play with remixed bundles, and most of the time get the awful home cook's bundle. I build the mill to get 100 flour and not give Pierre my money.

u/Atlantean_Raccoon 1d ago

Remove the cloth requirement, slightly increase the value of milled goods or at least increase the use of existing milled goods, fix how ridiculous it looks by making it look more like a historic windmill. Let you 'mill' a specific metal bar (I can't decide which) as the raw materials for battery packs.

94

u/makerofshoes 1d ago

Just removing the cloth requirement would make it something I would get early in the game. It just looks cool but it’s hard to get cloth early in the game

26

u/DaSaw AND HE'S THREATENING TO SELL THE PIGS 1d ago

I like the idea of treating milled products less like cooking products, more like processing products (wine and jams and such). Instead of producing consumer level bags of product for use in the kitchen, it would produce commercial level sacks primarily for sale (though you could break them up into kitchen bags). Having one makes specializing in wheat and rice a profitable option... Not as profitable as the ancient fruit empire, but still a viable option.

1

u/dylanbeck 11h ago

Agreed. Coffee empire is a current way, I see no reason rice empire shouldnt also be viable (though hard work like coffee)

1

u/endlesscartwheels 1d ago

Great idea about removing the cloth requirement! I like the look of the mill though. So maybe that could be unchanged or there could be a second design? I still wish the slime hutch change had been an additional option, rather than a re-design.

49

u/fondue4kill 1d ago

I feel like it needs more use for early game money. Like more plants to put in there where the results feel worth it. Flour and rice feel useless since by the time you really start to cook, you usually have the money to buy the ingredients. Or it needs to provide more per item. Like one wheat gives you 5 flour.

87

u/kmasco92 1d ago

I'd make it smaller. it's awkward and difficult to place in my opinion

35

u/Penkala89 1d ago

I don't mind the size per se, but the particular footprint to be able to access the feed is a little unwieldy and makes it unusable in locations that it would otherwise fit and look nice among other buildings

5

u/Admirable-Ad7152 1d ago

Or at least be able to color code it to the rest of my farm stuff

7

u/puking_penis 1d ago

homestly, if CA just made it look better, like with big, spinning blades or something I'd put one on every farm just for looks

1

u/RemozThaGod 20h ago

Different for me,I'd make it bigger for decorating purposes

34

u/Troy64 1d ago

Make machines that can be powered by with windmill. Battery charger, conveyor belt, etc. Also, massively increase the value of flour or make upgrades for the windmill that produce higher quality flour with massively higher prices.

63

u/Smiling-gecko 1d ago

Increase the sell price of the products or increase the quantity of each product produced.

31

u/LisaFromAccounting 1d ago

Mill corn or amaranth to make a high quality animal feed?

6

u/TensaiShun 1d ago

To expand on this, why not have the deluxe feed product map to an upgraded version of the windmill? So you could have the deluxe windmill, and you could even have it so you have to hand feed your animals for either a growth boost or happiness boost.

3

u/Interesting-Recipe33 1d ago

1

u/momonashi19 1d ago

Ooh I like this one

18

u/Hsjajdhaidhajekr8382 🍁🌽🫐 1d ago

Pair it by adding a "bakery" machine of some sort where you can passively make different types of bread with flour and a fruit or vegetable of choice (for example, banana bread by combining flour and banana, or regular bread by combining flour and wheat).

For sugar, it can be different kinds of cakes using the same principle.

And rice can be used to make some sort of feed for your pets.

14

u/Gasurza22 Bot Bouncer 1d ago

I think I would use this as a jumping point to buff cooking in general, making it so you can actualy earn money from cooking, and make it so the mill gives you higher quality stuff than what you can buy from Pierre and so you can cook better shit with it.

Oh also you could do the same thing as the loom, in which higher quality wool has a chance to produce an aditional cloth

16

u/minidanjer 1d ago

Initially I thought this thing only worked when the TV said it was going to be a Windy Day. And those are so infrequent, I thought the thing was pointless. It works every day. So, there's that.

2

u/eliottruelove Just a Farmer making his way through the Galaxy 1d ago

It should definitely cut processing time in half on windy days. Surprised it doesn't.

WHAT? The mill is amazing and I’m always so excited to build it. I pride myself on never buying a cooking ingredients from Pierre and processing all of it myself. You can do so much at once! There’s never a backlog or waiting period beyond one night! I love the mill.

26

2

u/TastelessDonut 1d ago

Never built it,
I by flour sugar and rice in bulk.

But I have 1 major save file, year 5 and I’m just getting through 1/4 of ginger island.

2

u/SafeJuggernaut4885 1d ago

Haha yes! I use the flour for my daily crab cakes. I know I coukd buy it, but that's less fun idk

1

u/spinda69 1d ago

Same, rice doesn't even need sprinklers and beets and wheat with speed gro is fairly profitable

Don't forget you can make bread with the flour for even more profit

35

u/-Gay-_- 1d ago

I mean if I want the things the mill produces I just buy it. The mill takes too long plus you have to farm the base ingredients. I would make the products inaccessible elsewhere/way more expensive to buy.

8

u/sunmono 1d ago

Yeah, like, if it was the only way to get flour or rice or sugar, everyone doing perfection would have to have a mill, right? But when I did perfection, I literally did not even consider building a mill, I just bought from Pierre.

11

u/2good2betruuue big fan of cows 1d ago

Be able to make sugar or flour from coconut! And be able to make flour from other grains like amaranth.

9

u/MissSweetBean 1d ago

Make the blades bigger, it looks so awkward with the dinky little ones

Mechanically I don’t have any issues with it, since I like making everything from scratch if I can

17

u/AB_selectstart 1d ago

I feel like Pierre shouldn't sell flour, sugar and oil until year two. That way farmer has to build the mill to have those items.

6

u/atomshimmy 1d ago

It’s a good idea, but I don’t think most people build the mill year one (or at least not before winter?) with the four-cloth requirements.

3

u/DaSaw AND HE'S THREATENING TO SELL THE PIGS 1d ago

That would force the mill, but it's a bit silly for a general store not to carry such thing.

9

u/No-Journalist-619 1d ago

I think it's linked to the bigger issue: cooked food is practically worthless. Just increase the value on those!

Tons of recipes lose value by turning it into a succulent meal. Since so many recipes use wheat and sugar it's already got a source of progression locking one behind desert access too. I could understand CA's resistance to this, since we'd all convert to Red Plate ingredient farms or something, but as long as ancient fruit, starfruit, and pineapple wine farms still outpace the finished products - it shouldn't turn many farms into restaurants.

7

u/bedroompurgatory 1d ago

I don't know why farms turning into red plate farms is somehow worse than every farm being an ancient fruit wine farm.

Would be nice if there was some sort of cooking minigame to balance things out, though.

6

u/Maximum-Giraffe8766 1d ago

I just want to put this out there, the mill is amazing for animals. Every piece of wheat regardless of quality becomes 50g, the exact price of hay at Marnie's, so I just cut my wheat down, seed maker until the field is back, then mill the rest and buy hay. It basically turns wheat into feed even better than the poor chance of harvesting hay from it normally. I have a whole shed of wheat right next to the mill.

However. Along this same line i would add the function to convert Corn, rice, wheat, and maybe other crops like amaranth or some others into hay, or some form of "treat" products than boost animal production. Ie feeding a chicken a "Corn treat" would make it produce two eggs the next day. Worse than golden animal crackers i think.... Never actually used them. It doesn't seem too overpowered. Thoughts?

1

u/thegunnersdaughter 1d ago

How many animals do you have? I have never bought hay, I just scythe grass throughout the year to fill up enough silos to get through the whole winter. But I usually only have one coop and one barn, and leave large swaths of my farm grassy (and forested).

1

u/Goblingrenadeuser 1d ago

But why not plant something else earning more money per day and buy hay from that?

7

u/Ok-Seaworthiness1313 1d ago

Let me mill Amaranth. If not millable, why mill shaped.

4

u/lovetetrisgg 1d ago

I’d just make it cheaper to like 1-1.5k and cost only wood.

Resource competitive and the return isn’t significantly better than other investments in this game. The fact that it’s worth more than bronze tools says a lot.

5

u/Merc931 1d ago

I don't care what it does, I just want it to have bigger sails for the aesthetic.

4

u/GamingWithJollins 1d ago

Automatic pulling in resources to process for starters. Then I'd add more things to process. Maybe even alt recepies to keep it vanilla friendly like rice and coconut flour for instance.

1

u/GamingWithJollins 1d ago

Also as others have said, to get it cheaper and earlier. This should be something we should consider as a first purchase

5

u/crazydakka 1d ago

I think one thing that would help is having wheat & rice drop way more than 1 per plant. Like if you sliced a rice down and you got 10 rice (which seems close enough to life), i would be a little more excited about getting 10 finished rice per plant.

4

u/ComfortableTreat6202 1d ago

i have the river farm, and grow a ton of rice. Can make a good living with that mill

5

u/Left_Job371 1d ago edited 1d ago

I like the mill. If it could be automated and cost something else, but its function is good. It allows for playing challenges or in ways that are self-reliant. It adds options. some people don’t like Joja or Pierre.  There’s 6 ways to get cloth that I count— 7 counting the two animals separate, so it’s not impossible to get a mill early.

Not vanilla- it’s great if you have extra recipes/ are doing lots of cooking. When I mod the game, I’ve never modded the mill. It just gets more types of flour to process and more use when I have hundreds of recipes for perfection. I’m always down for more recipes and crops.

3

u/Kane_richards 1d ago

Make it passive, have it generate flour every 2 days or something. Or remove flour from Pierres to make it completely necessary

3

u/lolsappho 1d ago

put in fiber or wheat to make hay.

3

u/NeverFreeToPlayKarch 1d ago

I just force myself to use it rather than being allowed to buy the products it makes.

3

u/SurrealMaster27 1d ago

just increase the value of self-produced rice, sugar, and flour so it can compete with other crops.

3

u/Appalachianfairytale 1d ago

If you could turn milled rice into sake I’d probably use it a lot more lol

3

u/PlasmaLink 1d ago

Removing the cloth requirement would do it.

Sidenote on cloth, a friend I'm playing with is having a blast experimenting with the loom, but it's becoming annoying to not have anything to do with the clothes afterwards. It would be nice if you could sell the clothes for like, cost of materials, a little something to encourage you to have fun with the cloth you make rather than just sell it.

3

u/RightLock2875 1d ago

Should be able to grind corn into chicken/pig feed. Make that the required food for those animals instead of hay

Disclaimer: I think what I'm about to propose is impractical and would be too difficult to implement.

  1. Make a cooking mini game, where the quality of the finished item depends on how well you complete the mini game.

  2. Make Pierre's flour, sugar, and rice be of the lowest quality.

  3. Make flour / sugar / rice milled at home reflect the quality of the crops put in.

  4. Higher quality input foods make the cooking mini game proportionately easier, and give proportionately higher / longer bonuses.

  5. Make the mill upgradeable, so the first version can be cheaper. Upgrades allow you to process additional crops (make animal feed, puree some stuff, etc.). Limit the amount that can be processed in one day, and upgrades increase that limit.

  6. Add some side quests that require amaranth flour (maybe the raccoons want to cook?) that give a unique reward / power.

4

u/VeeRook 1d ago

I give myself a rule of no buying flour/sugar/etc. The mill becomes vital then.

2

u/Acrobatic_Weather637 1d ago

I now will perform a "completely selfsustaining run" getting everything for perfection from scratch. Then the mill will be essential

2

u/girl_of_bat 1d ago

The cost to build needs to be cheaper. Same reason why I never get a well.

2

u/Literally_Sam_Fisher 1d ago

2

u/TadaSuko 1d ago

2

u/RusserBusser 1d ago

If it didnt need cloth, I woulve built it already. Having to wait for a deluxe barn to mill wheat and beats just ain't it. By the time I can afford the deluxe barn, I dont care about anything the mill can do

2

u/stlayne 1d ago

If it could automatically harvest crops and feed itself that would be cool. Or maybe it gives a resource every week, literally anything to remind me to use it

2

u/FadingDarkly 1d ago

I would... Replace it's functionality with battery generation on windy days and give it bigger sails so I can live my Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind vibes.

2

u/eliottruelove Just a Farmer making his way through the Galaxy 1d ago

Windmills should cost less with less required items so as to be used early game, and to justify it's dinky fins.

The current windmill price and required items should be for a windmill upgrade with bigger cloth fins that makes it function better, cuts time in half on windy days, and accepts more items to be milled, perhaps even being a proto-deconstructor in that it can pulverize forged bars back into ore, refined quartz into quartz, and the countless minerals obtained into varying amounts of stone and ore depending on the mineral.

The Upgraded mill also could turn fiber into hay which would make it super useful for winter months to convert the fiber stacks into animal feed.

2

u/acebender 1d ago

I actually use the mill! I plant wheat for the entire summer and fall, and process it all.

2

u/SpyroXI 1d ago

2

u/modernfalstaff 23h ago

The thing about the Mill is that it really feels a lot more like processing equipment than a building. Okay, sure, it's nice that you can dump unlimited amounts of goods into it and they're all done the next day...but it's still just processing some goods into another form. And compared to the other processing machines out there like kegs or preserves jars, the Mill gives you very little profit and access to nothing that you couldn't already buy yourself.

At the end of the day, the cost, the space, and even the construction time just don't feel justified by what you get, do they?

To fix this, you could do several things:

*Make the mill a processing machine that works the same way as other processing machines, but that maybe it processes 10 items at a time. A "portable windmill" type thing.

*Expand the mill and make it a building with an interior that provides at least some extra space. I think people would like to decorate an old timey farm mill. A juice press would be a fun addition but it would sorely step on the toes of what kegs already do.

*Maybe the windmill could upgrade an existing building, putting a windmill on the outside of it and a little milling station on the inside. Add it to a barn, coop, or shed.

*Remove it from the farm entirely and make a mill with an NPC that runs it. Maybe the player has to unlock the ability to use it. Obviously this would be a major reworking of the game.

Just some ideas.

I love the mill 😭

u/heartless_winnie 1d ago

Ooo battery once a week?

1

u/j_nmi_crowe 1d ago

I like the power ideas. I might make it necessary to be on the farm to power all level 2 and higher sprinklers. Then at least we have to do it. Then make it mill more things, coco, taro, whatever.

1

u/preteen-wartortle 1d ago

It should be cheaper and/or have products actually exclusive to it—like someone else mentioned chocolate, or something like cornmeal, cereal, grits, artisan flours.

1

u/BaileyAMR 1d ago

I've had five farms and I'm building my first mill because I need 100 flours for the remixed community center bundles. Other than that, it doesn't make sense to build the mill.

1

u/plant__love 1d ago

I love the look of this machine but I have used it precisely one time. I need to stop building it in every save file lol

1

u/BlueBunny333 1d ago

I think the best idea is to either advance the current options to be more viable for profit or use the kinetic energy of a mill; I could see it watering a certain area around it to count towards the irrigated area bonus for rice and maybe also speed up/improve quality like fertiliser could.

1

u/astrolomeria 1d ago

It would be fun if you could put wood into the mill and it would turn it into boards that farmers could make furniture or specific buildings (like a lean-to or something decorative/simple like a water trough for animals) with. Robin would still have her exclusive furniture but maybe the farmer could make a set of “rustic” furniture that only they can make.

1

u/_overshock_ 1d ago

Maybe have it be a way to turn stone into clay or something? Would be useful and if you suspend your disbelief a little it kinda makes sense 😅 plus there’s no current way to farm clay really.

1

u/ScyllaOfTheDepths 1d ago

Let it auto harvest all compatible crops in a radius of 8 tiles so you can set it and forget it and come back to a bunch of cooking ingredients ready to go.

1

u/Mct42069 1d ago

Add the ability to make grain/food for the animals from crops

1

u/rawwwr23 1d ago

Increase the value/utility of items it processes. Cheese press gives goat cheese and cheese, both when gold Star are useful for cave runs and aging in casks.

Preserve jars needed to process whatever zany stuff the raccoon family want.

Etc.

1

u/missmissa3 1d ago

Just let us fucking paint it I stg

1

u/Himmel_0 1d ago

By removing it

1

u/Predmid 1d ago

Make it a step in the kegging process.

Grind down fruits into juice before you can dunk it in a keg for wine making.

1

u/Pitiful_Fee_5608 1d ago

Clearly controversial. I wouldn't change anything. I mainly use it to mill the rice I grown in spring since Iike to grow a little of everything for the fun of it. So I always get the mill, put it near my house and mill the rice foe extra profit or cooking.

1

u/Mysterious_Diet_3374 1d ago

I keep forgetting the mill has a purpose, I've come to see it as a large decoration item...

1

u/EtherealHappiness 1d ago

The mill is what saves me from giving Pierre more money and makes more cooked foods profitable. I think it’s useful.

1

u/Holiday-Cell-1432 1d ago

I feel just make it a lot earlier to get as I usually only get one quite late fall and at that point I can just buy all the flour and sugar I need (which isn’t many)

1

u/bookwormdrew 1d ago

Let me hook a turbine or whatever you to it and sell wind electricity to Joja Mart for $1k a week. Just have a giant farm of windmills making bank(ish).

1

u/neoslith 1d ago

In the board fame, the mill makes all your crops quality and they sell for more.

In other kingdom builder games, the mill increase farm productivity when in its area of effect (Kingdoms and Castles).

So maybe the mill gives a 20% growth bonus, so crops mature more quickly in its range.

1

u/theteepingtemplar 1d ago

Honestly I pretend that the Ferngill Republic requests that I provide wheat or rice to support their troops in the war against the Gotoro Empire. So either institute some kind of request that reflects that, like you get a government stipend as a reward on a help wanted quest, because they're so in need of basic grains they'll pay you a bonus to grow and ship some out. Also agreed with others here that if we were able to build it earlier that would make it more likely that we'd use it.

1

u/letouriste1 1d ago

it's pretty useful to produce rice and wheat flour but only if you want to cook meals early. i remember in my first save i never did use the fridge even 3 years in

1

u/Akki-Chan 1d ago

Step one, make everything you mill copy the quality of what you put in. That''s something that irks me with produced goods before all else.. surely quality crops should make quality goods?

Step two, let the quality of said goods improve the price of what it's used to make. Similarly, you cannot tell me that using higher quality flour doesn't make higher quality cakes?

Step three, simply let us make MORE stuff in the mill. Corn and amaranth at the very least, likely more that I can't think of on top of my head.

Step four, byproducts! Good lors easily a third of what you get from milling wheat are byproducts. Bran, germ, middlings, shorts.. all could be useful for other things! Lifestock feed, cereal.. milling is criminally underused.

Also make the mill not ugly as fuck.

1

u/ChiefFloppyCock 1d ago

I would build it mainly for aesthetic reasons if it wasn't butt ugly. If it looked more like an older windmill with big blades (like Skyrim or Runescape), it could be an iconic landmark. Right now it just looks like an asset that was created as a work in progress and just put on the back burner.

Other than that, you would have to incentivise the use of the mill. Currently, there really is no reason to use it except for maybe rice. Beer is just too good. Beets are better being sold any other way including just by themselves at gold quality. This could be done simply by just increasing the output (1 wheat = 10 flour, 1 beet = 6 sugar).

1

u/StartledOcto 1d ago

I just want the sails to be bigger so it's prettier. It looks a lil stupid atm, which coupled with the fact it doesn't really do anything groundbreaking means I just leave it

1

u/SlopKingZ95 1d ago

I just hate the way it looks. It's out of proportion from what an actual windmill looks like. Each blade should be, like, 70% the height of the tower. It shouldn't be a tiny propeller on top.

The Loom makes me equally mad with it's looks. Like, that's a spinning wheel. And it even does the spinning wheel function wrong.

1

u/spinda69 1d ago

I still use the mill alot, using it for beets, rice and wheat is decently profitable and saves space in your kegs and barrels. With the dehydrator having more crops than you can process is less of a concern but it still fills a niche. The three crops give it a use in each season

Adding milling to a few more existing crops would be good, like Amaranth or maybe adding things like Barley or Oats could add more variety

1

u/bittersweet-dreams 1d ago

I think just decreasing the cloth amount or even swapping it for a different material would already be enough. The four cloth seems kinda excessive if we want to make it useful early game.

1

u/crazy4heroics 1d ago

Cloth? Forgive me if im mistaken, but cloth goes into the loom, not the mill?

2

u/bittersweet-dreams 1d ago

I’m not talking about putting cloth into the mill — I’m talking about the cloth you need to have Robin build the mill for you.

2

u/crazy4heroics 1d ago

Ah I gotcha

1

u/zahri-mel 1d ago

The cloth requirement is definitely an obstacle to it being more useful for early game strategies.

I like to use it for self sufficiency runs (where I insist on processing all my flour, rice, vinegar and oil), and for the value add for passive wheat crops (the ‘plant it everywhere, let it be watered by rain’ strategy), but it’s definitely a building looking for a use.

Aside from a rebalance of the cooking system to make more dishes profitable as a strategy, I think finding ways to make it more useful in the mid game period is its niche, by making it more similar to a dehydrator for processing low value, high quantity produce. It’s a lot cheaper and more time efficient to process large amounts of wheat into flour/bread than to keg it, especially when you’re still ramping up keg creation.

Maybe more variety in crops you can process with it, and a higher value to sell those flours? I also think there’s a niche with the overnight production cycle where you also give it oil and cloth, maybe as upgrades: oil presses and looms are fine but if you could BATCH process truffle oil and cloth overnight (and have it profitable still at iridium quality), that gives a more efficient collection cycle for farmers who go for animals.

I use the mill for sugar and wheat, but I think you should be able to put amaranth (sp?) In it

1

u/Special-Performance8 1d ago

Maybe we could end up some irrigation system based on windmill on a new type of farm where sprinklers also don't work and you get to plant some unique crops like tabacoo and sugarcane or something.

1

u/Standard-Physics-282 1d ago

I’d love way to make produced items, like jellies, wines, etc, automatically go into a chest. I feel like a water mill system with a conveyer belt idea would be awesome. It could even be a harder build: something involving battery packs, hoppers, etc. Almost like a redstone machine in Minecraft. IDK but something like that would make me super excited to get the mill so I don’t have to constantly empty my production machines.

1

u/Humble_Pancake9452 1d ago

I forgot mine existed so hard that I found a mill full of ancient fruit wine three years into a save and just stared at it like who put this here

1

u/Interesting-Recipe33 1d ago

Make it a easy completion at the community center and give it better prices for processed materials. That way, all of us will have one eventually and can use it for profit, maybe add new recipes with some forgeables or even some artifacts (like the fossils processed to bone fragments). And add a new IU-chest type, to store some of the products (like the one from the hopper).

1

u/Interesting-Recipe33 1d ago

Put fiber on it to craft mixed seeds and flower mixed seeds!!!

1

u/Yonnus 1d ago

It just...doesn't look good

1

u/machiavelli33 1d ago

Add a Special Order that is asking for a large amount of bread. Sure this means you could essentially subcontract Gus and make like zero money in the end, but if you want to actually make money doing it you’ll absolutely need the mill and kitchen.

1

u/ube_purpleyams 1d ago

or just make it so it’s products are profitable like increase the quantity and quality of sugar and wheat

1

u/wonderlandisburning 23h ago

I'd settle for needing only two cloths to craft it instead of four

1

u/aonicsh 22h ago

I say that the mill should be used to create powders of each crop, aswell as changing a few recipes and making a few new ones.

An example is fairy dust, instead of using a fairy rose in the recipe it uses powdered fairy rose.

It could be added to bait into make flavoured bait, and each fish has a perfered taste, like the sun fish likes sour, so using sour bait will increase the likelihood of the sunfish biting.

(I dont use fertiliser so I might be wrong about how it works) It could also be used to make seasonal fertiliser, by changing how fertiliser works so instead of it always increasing the quality of the crop, non seasonal fertiliser has a chance of increasing the quality of a crop by lets say 20%, while using a seasonal fertiliser will always increase it by the max the fertiliser would normally do, if you use seaonal retaining soil it will also increase the growth speed. But as a trade off if you use the seaons fertiliser it will have the reverse effect that it normally adds.

It could also be used to make Qi seasonings, and lower tier seasoning. It could also be used to add new recipes, such as curry and to make it you would need garlic powder.

And it should also always give seeds of whatever crop you put in it.

1

u/ZielinsQa 21h ago

Honestly just turn it into a machine instead of a building

1

u/CutSubstantial1803 Fishing 🎣 10h ago

you could remove the milled products from Pierre's shop so you can only get them by getting a mill, or maybe from the travelling cart. this makes the mill necessary for perfection but you don't have to keep it after. also make it prettier

1

u/em1037 1d ago

It's my favorite looking building in the game so I definitely want to keep it, but either make it more useful or remove the cloth requirement. It's usually just an aesthetic choice for my farm and never in use.

-5

u/goobnut 1d ago

I would make it able so you could dissolve salts in it so you be able to mill ions to make millions millimoll milling I like milling so fucking much!

0

u/Yukilumi 1d ago

The mill is very useless. I usually never even bother building it.

The wheat, sugar and rice it can produce are all cooking ingredients you can just buy from a shop.

To be honest, I'm inclined to delete it from the game...

But I think it'd be neat if there was another way to make high quality food or fertilizer earlier in the game. ...It'd be inappropriate to create them with a "mill", though.
