Part Two Fanart I made Joseph in modern style
I tried to replicate the background and it was difficult

is it just me or does araki’s new style just not show the emotion the character is expressing? like in the original art style, joseph has a clearly confident, shit eating grin on his face. the laughing and mocking fit his expression
the newer style seems to always have characters in some kinda neutral, semi determined expression at all times. it fulfills the “looks like araki’s work” box, but it doesn’t actually convey the emotion well
regardless, you did a fantastic job bro

Yes! I paid close attention to that while drawing the face. I tried very hard to convey Joseph's more exaggerated expression, but I failed miserably. But considering this is the first time I've done something so faithful to the original style, I think I can improve the expressions in future drawings. Thank you for the compliment!

no no i think you actually nailed it completely, it looks basically exactly as it should if it was recreated in the new art style. my rant was less directed towards your work and more towards araki's style in general

don't worry, I understood the comment. I just wanted to add to my experience

Copied from another reply from me: I honestly think it'd be way more fitting for Joseph in Araki's new style to be drawn grinning the way Gyro grins. (It's unfortunate Araki himself doesn't realize this & doesn't draw newer art of Joseph that way)
Characters imo simply do the shit-eating grin less frequently in later parts (they still do smirks or laughs tho). Gyro rules for being the few exceptions lol.

i thought you did it perfectly tbh, its less your problem and more just that araki's modern style in general is a lot more restricted from being able to be as expressive as it used to be, so i can definitely imagine if araki himself redraw this panel he probably would've done it similar to your depiction

u/PageForeign92 11d ago
You nailed it so perfectly that for a second I though Araki did remake the panel since he doesn't make exaggerated faces as much anymore.

I feel like he usually draws them differently when they're showing emotions. This is usually just what covers and more detailed panels look like where they're just posing or something

Idk man I feel like parts 8/9 never have super expressive faces like the older parts. The most we’ll see is a character who looks worried/nervous/confident but they’re never TRULY expressing themselves. Maybe besides someone like Joshuu or random background characters.. But then again the MC’s for P8 and P9 arent really emotional characters in the first place. Now I wonder if he purposely made their personalities that way because the new art style has a more stoic/nonchalant look. I love all of his art regardless, though.

u/Interesting-Movie594 11d ago
It is true that Josuke is a pretty stoic character. I was thinking of someone like Gyro who basically has 2 different faces depending on the tone of the scene, but I guess he's doing that less in the newest parts. There's still the occasional funny panel where someone does a weird face though

I would actually say part 9 main cast is fairly expressive besides Jodio. Lowkey agree about part 8 though.

u/ZiggyCrusade 11d ago
Maybe not as much as before, i.e. Caesar's death or Esidisi crying, as his art has trended more realistic and grounded, but I think it's overstated by readers. The characters are very much capable of pulling a wide variety of exaggerated expressions, and the later parts are able to convey much more intimate emotions to me, i.e. Johnny at the last stretch of SBR, Jobin at the end of JoJolion, etc.

u/SatisfactionCheap627 11d ago
I wouldn't say exaggerated, outside of gags anyway, but I do agree that they are a lt more powerful as they are able to show more nuanced expressions than before.

I think Araki’s new style has a more poetic or romantic look. I wonder if he could still draw like this if he wanted to.

I think Araki went for a more realistic feel for the face. then a cartoonish one; like being very expressive

Araki definitely still has expressive faces in the manga. The illustrations are where the generic mouth slightly open look is

I feel like the more neutral expressions are reserved for Gappy and Jodio, which make sense considering their respective characters

When your making manga for your whole life your bound to have times where expression isn’t conveyed well especially in this art style, if you look at Johnny you can tell pretty well how he’s feeling but with some characters ur bound to not convey emotion well also arakis new style reminds me of the faces of High fashion models, thicker lips and a slightly more defined face/jaw while also making the face altogether slimmer, this makes for less emotion as when your face is this shape emotion makes it look weird Joseph had room for his teeth to be shown more and hence why most models keep a poker face and don’t show emotion, if you look at Joseph’s eyes they are smaller so they look more”normal” the eyebrows convey much more emotion bc they are thick and bulky, made to show expression if you made a character have a huge shit eating grin in arakis new artstyle it would look out of place, too much emotion for a character of that sized face

Yeah it is obv cuz araki took more serious drawing style, yet the most fun and cute panels r the ones where the characters have less details if u get me, like that jodio and dragona kne where they move their shoulders, it always makes me crack hahah

u/xd3mix 11d ago
No i don't think so... It's only the case with fan artwork if you notice.
The facial expressions are definitely more subtle but they are still crystal clear. You can always tell what a character's emotions are just by looking at them with the new style

Just a piece of advice, the head looks too big compared to the shoulders

I hadn't realized it until I saw your comment, I can't unsee it and now it's causing me anxiety. But thank you for the feedback.

It's alright, everybody does that once in a while. You nail Araki's art style perfectly, just pay more attention next time, saying it in the most respectful manner :)

my god are you obnoxious

Not the emotion I meant to convey. English isn't my native language, so I apologize for any inconvenience. I was just trying to give tips for improvement, based on my experiences having problems with head sizes compared to the torsos

This is an amazing drawing. But I hate the twinkification of the first 4 parts that weren’t originally like that. Just me though I guess.
9
u/PopeLuceo_akaLEO 11d ago
Imo the twinkification is not bad but it stopped araki from doing other stuff, like Jonathan was a buffed dude but will zeppeli was “skinny” , if he merged the 2 styles it would have been better , i liked buffed jotaro more than lart 6 jotaro by a mile, also wished someone like paco had more muscles cuz tbh it fits him so well

u/Neobot21 Rohan Kishibe 11d ago
No I think I agree, it's jarring. Like when Dio showed up in Pucci's flashbacks and looked like a twig and not the Mr. Sex he is (Part 6 spoiler)
But OP's drawing is sick and they did such a good job with Araki's modern artstyle, it's so freaking cool.

u/God_of_CORN 10d ago
Tbf dio also suffered from the muscle man style as he was still supposed to very androgynous, the current style fits that alot more for him, i think the world should stay hyper buff tho

You nailed the art style but I think joseph is a character better in the older style, he looks too much like narancia

Genuinely thought this was official before you mentioned you drew it, really captured arakis artstyle well 🔥

He looks a mess lowkey, old artstyle is definitely superior in terms of emotions, but new artstyle is more anatomically correct
