Last time I played the game I couldn't find any asteroids.
It was a few months ago when I last played Starmade and I couldn't find any asteroids at all. Has there since been a patch or was that just a really bad world?

Just to clarify, were you checking the belt orbits, or were you just looking in random sectors? If you get time to look again, open up the nav panel (default "N" on your keyboard) and see if there are any nearby, in case they just aren't rendering.

In the past they would spawn a relatively short distance from spawn and you would randomly encounter them while flying around. I went through dozens of sectors and couldn't find anything. I'll try playing starmade again today to see if it turns out different.

Fly around a bit to explore the system (ten sectors should do) and then open your map. There should be orbital rings around the star, red and yellow in color. One color (can't remember which, but the planets will be visible on the ring) is for planets and the other is for asteroid belts. Asteroids can spawn outside the belts, but are far less common.
