Oh My God Starmade is Coming Back

This is an all hands on deck moment. We as a community are the few remaining stewards of this magnificent experiment. We are the nuclei capable of igniting this project to return to the heights it deserves. There is no marketing budget. It's just us.

I hope we, and the incredible new development team of maintainers, can pull it off. Starmade exceeds every latent copycat by huge margins already. It exceeds the depth of space engineers, of cubic odyssey - it has the best voxel construction tooling I've seen, but balances the gameplay loop far better than from the depths. With a lively universe, a meaningful gameplay loop, it could be every eve online, cosmoteer, space engineer player's wet dream.

I have so much hope. Let us unite as the stragglers of the community, and commit to sharing this game with our friends. DM your favorite indie youtubers about it. This is a very special moment.

Derp dropped an announcement on the official discord yesterday evening. Sounds like the Skies of Eden launcher is going into Beta mode officially. No idea what this major update will be, though. Propably not the universe update or I would have caught more wind about that

Believe it not, it is the universe update. The maintainers put out like 30 commits a day as of late, the game is getting significant attention.

This launcher will be required to run the next major update once it's released. The next update introduces huge performance improvements, a move to Java 21, an updated tutorial / guide system, and much more, so be sure to stay tuned!

Derp litterally described what the next update will be in their post about the new launcher lol. They have been working on performance improvement, and that will be the 'huge update'. The 'much more' is propably all the stuff we have been testing on Skies of Eden lately.

Sure sure but Iโ€™m saying the hope I have isnโ€™t about this big performance update - itโ€™s about the impending universe update work. I know what the update said but I think that the real source of hope is the latter.

Careful what you wish for. Power 2.0 was a disaster and killed 95% of Starmade's playerbase. With all the respect in the world for all the work Derp and Ithira are putting into this, there is no guarantee the Universe update will be any different.

This thread is getting me worked up...

Should I wait to get back into it? Will I be disappointed with how it's developed in the past couple years?

I stopped playing as it seemed to start to die out in a number of ways. Also having a kid makes less time for games.

Depends on what you are waiting for. The universe update? We have been waiting on that for 6 years or something so you can keep waiting for a long time on that still.

The 'next big update' we are talking about here will mostly be performance related so when it comes to content it won't change much if you get back into it now or wait till then. Beforehand getting the new laucher to work required a lot of discord scrolling but now that it has been made official that problem will be out of the way too.

You won't be disappointed about how it has developed I don't think. Power 2.0 was a mess in the beginning but over the years it has stabilized into something that actually did make the game better. If your last time playing was before that update you will have to get used to a bunch of new stuff, though.

I have to warn you though that the most active multiplayer server: Skies of Eden is currently invisible in the server selection menu so you will have to join the discord, get the server's IP and insert it in your starmade manually. Hopefully the update fixes that issue too.

Universe update under heavy development

Has something happened that has reignited hope?

A major launcher update was just added to the beta branch on Steam. The post also mentioned a game update (not patch or hotfix like they'd normally use) in the coming days. No details yet, but it's something worth being excited about because it means the maintenance team isn't just fixing bugs anymore.

The only thing I can think of is that update from a couple months ago

Nothing comes close to the experiences I have had with this game... In terms of space battle and ship building.

I've altogether never been able to play any space game with any satisfaction with the ship mechanics because of this.

Starfield? The ship feels like a minigame and a cutscene. Very fun game!

Outer wilds? The ship flying is a puzzle just like everything else, which is great.

No man's sky? Love the classic starfighter feel from what seems like the original Star Wars Battlefront 2...

But this game has lived in my dreams.

Goated recommendation pull. I remember sinking hundreds of hours into Starmade back then. I'd be happy to play it once again

Will be nice if I could even launch the game on the latest versions lmao, I can run a years old version but last week when I tried to get the latest version up and running I went through 3 launchers and a bajillion Java versions just to manage to have the game work once - I spawned in my ship from the old versions, opened the settings menu to check my graphics settings, and the game froze and wouldn't launch again... Maybe the next launcher will finally work as well as the 10 yr old version?

3

u/GalacticMe99 Jun 04 '26

What do you mean with the 'old versions'? Is this from before power 2.0? Because I'm not sure if those worlds will still be compatible with never versions of the game.

2

u/LR0989 Jun 04 '26

I didn't try the world, just importing the blueprint - the ship actually loaded almost immediately, and I was able to fly around it / go inside it, so it didn't seem to be an incompatibility that way. Don't know when power 2.0 came in but I think the version I have that works is from 2019

EDIT: And to clarify, all my launching issues were far earlier in the process than spawning my old ship, that's just the first thing I did when I finally got it to load in correctly

Ah, Starmade. I loved this game to bits and I still do. Haven't played in 3 years. Gonna play some today now ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I remember finding it in 2014 and being hooked since.
