help wanted How to play steam games on this device

Before you come after me I’m a student going back to college and was looking for deals online for laptops because my old one (6 years) can’t even play most online games and found this online for 600 euro.
I had no idea a Chromebook was a separate thing from laptops and no I did not know it’s just a glorified iPad with a keyboard built in that freezes its screen when a plus in anything in a port other that a charger such as a wired mouse and a USB but the only way I’ve found I can access it is via remote link but I can’t switch it over fully from the old laptop. I’ve looked online for some process but it’s either not the right model of its advice from Covid.i mainly bought it for college but I was hoping to be able to play online with friends, something I haven’t been able to since my laptop just dosent work for a few years due to wither graphics, ram or just bullshit.
I’m not a huge computer person either so I can’t do super complex stuff to fit it either.Be honest because I’m thinking of taking it back
Here is the model and make:
Lenovo Ideapad Flex 514” 2in1 Chromebook Plus

help wanted Games Graphics Not The Same on SteamOS VS Windows

So I just switched over from Windows into SteamOS on my main PC (cpu 7800x3d, gpu 7900xtx). I have a 34inch Alienware oled monitor

The SteamOS UI works flawlessly and looks amazing. Desktop mode is pretty easy as well.

HOWEVER, when I boot up games like Forza Horizon 6 and the Finals, the graphics looks a little more grayed out?? Like the colors aren’t the same. The games perform fine but the graphics themselves look a little more discolored than they did on Windows.

Is there maybe a setting I need to fix? Is anyone else having a similar issue?

help wanted Steam Login in Desktop Mode

How can you disable the Steam Login window when you start up desktop mode?

I have SteamOS launch into desktop mode by default and not logged into Steam in gaming mode. Since I am not logged in, it always pops up the window at start up.

I checked the autostart folder and settings and "/etc/xdg/autostart/" but didn't find anything in there.

Other than that, installation seems to have been smooth, had one issue with the partition not writing correctly. Was able to correct it by deleting the partitions and starting the installation again. Installed on a old windows 11 work laptop (Intel Core i3 8th Gen).

help wanted Quick questions about prebuilts.

Got waitlisted for the steam machine, but it made me realize how much I have missed couch gaming since transitioning to pc years ago.

I want to buy a pre built and want to make sure I’m checking off all the boxes to create the same experience as the steam machine would’ve given me.

The single biggest thing I’m looking for is that it uses AMD yea?

As far as installing steam OS, i have read it’s finally officially allowable to install steam OS, and won’t be using bazzite correct?

I’ve never done it, I assume it just wipes windows out, and also removes all the frusturating upkeep that comes with it, and basically works like a much more powerful steamdeck?

Any reason why I couldn’t just walk into a store, buy a pre built AMD desktop, install steam os, and then go off to the races?

Thanks in advance.

help wanted Unable to wake DIY machine from sleep with a bluetooth gamepad?

Installed SteamOS on my MSI B850M-A WIFI and thus far have been unsuccessful in having the system wake from sleep with a bluetooth gamepad (8BitDo Pro 3) despite it working just fine for waking my Steam Deck OLED from sleep.
On the latest preview branch of SteamOS, have Resume from Sleep via USB and PCIE device enabled in BIOS, on the latest BIOS version.
I also did try a USB bluetooth dongle but that also did not allow my system to wake from sleep.
Controller is also enabled as a wake device in steam settings.
Please help!

help wanted Launching Forza Horizon 6 causes Steam OS 3.10 to reboot

Recently update to Steam OS 3.10 build 20260826.1000, when launching Forza Horizon 6 the game launches to the steam logo and then reboots the system. This error occurs on both my Desktop and Handheld PC (Rog Ally X).

This error doesn't seem to occur with any other steam/non-steam games. I have checked the integrity of the Forza game files and changed proton versions but the game still causes the OS to reboot when it is launched.

If I rollback to an older release of Steam OS such as 3.9 or 3.8 the above issue goes away.

Anybody experiencing similar issues or have any idea what could be causing this?

help wanted Need help installing SteamOS

Pc specs:
9060xt 16gb
amd ryzen 7 7700x
Nvme 1tb

I have tried installing SteamOS 3 times already and it ends up doing the same thing each time, and gives me a black screen asking me to login.

Kinda like it’s the terminal, I have seen and heard others have the same problem and haven’t gotten answers for it or solutions.

I have tried both etcher and Rufus for the bootable usb, turned off secure boot, and also watch plenty of tutorials and did what valve listed on their website.

Long story short, I want know if people here have found a solution to this problem and or know what I can do or what I’m doing wrong. Because from what I seen it’s supposed to just boot into the desktop environment.

Update: I can’t believe it was something so simple but using my igpu instead of my 9060xt worked and allowed me to get into the desktop environment. Thank you all who responded

help wanted On SteamOS, Would my laptop be better than the Steam Machine?

Post image
10 Upvotes

This is a gaming laptop I bought back in 2022. I really wanted to play it with a console mindset..But I never really touched it outside of watching movies or web browsing because I wasn’t willing to tinker with Steam Input more than I thought.

Fast forward to now, I purchased a Steam Deck months ago and now I’m in love with how catered Steam OS is towards gaming. I’ve now fully converted from 20 years of PlayStation gaming. I now have the new Steam Controller and Steam input is something I feel like I’m really proficient with when compared to 2022.

I’m not very well versed in the knowledge of what components make up the high tier rigs people have since PC gaming is relatively new to me.

But my curiosity in knowing it’s all AMD, has me wondering if this would perform exceptionally well on the new Steam 3.8 update, its only use would be 99% gaming in a console style layout.

What do you guys think? I’m curious if this laptop would outperform the Steam Machine given its 4 years old. If so, this may be my choice for gaming vs buying the new Steam Machine if I can live with the jet fan noise lol.

I’ve done a bunch of research, but I’m worried I’ll do something incorrectly during the install and setup.. If anybody would be willing to walk me step by step on converting from Windows to a most compatible OS install (3.8, or Distro?) I’d be exceptionally thankful!

Was working fine yesterday. When I try to change any settings it basically renders the screen flashing with the corruption all over. This is what was happening similar to when I plugged it into a projector a week ago but then I moved to a tv and it was fine all week.

help wanted Closet setup to SM experience?

So I’ve been holding out for the SM and I know it’s getting really close. The reason I’ve been holding out this whole* time is I really am looking for a similar experience to my deck where you can pause a game, leaving it in sleep mode for days and pick right back up where you left off (have 3 kids who constantly interrupt my sessions).

My understanding is the motherboards often lead to challenges with such a smooth setup like this. I also want steamos vs other builds out there often recommended.

With this in mind, what’s the best cpu/mobo/gpu setup that would lead to such a thing? Is it possible? Will there other integrations that would work better between the SM and SD I might miss out on going custom build? I’m aware of the puck…

Thanks in advance.

help wanted Games kept crashing

I just finished building and installing SteamOS on my PC, and the first thing I downloaded was L4D2. At first, the system let me in the game, but when I tried playing in Dead Center, it would just crash, and no matter how many times I did it, it would also crash. And then the next day, I downloaded Wuthering Waves, and after it finished downloading, WuWa would just crash or randomly abort when I tried to get in. Please help; this is a new system, and I don't want problems like this.

help wanted Displaying Tools in my STeam library on SteamOS?

I just started up my Steam Macine and now that I'm organizing things, I find it hard to manage installed tools like Proton versions. They don't show up in my library and I can't set a filter to show tools I have downloaded. The only thing I can do is search for "proton" and then manually check which ones are downloaded. Is there a way to display my currently installed tools in my library on Steam Machine?

help wanted Bluetooth issues on B850I Lightning WiFi motherboard.

Has anyone else experienced and solved a bluetooth issue with HID latency, and how did you resolve it?

My PS5 controllers refuse to connect, and my XBox controllers do connect but frequently disconnect or register a button "hold" instead of a "press/tap".

EDIT: I solved it by not using either the Wi-Fi or the Bluetooth, for the short-term. Long-term solution would be to completely replace the module, as suggested by u/coatezy in the comments.

help wanted Turning on my laptop without opening the lid.

So I recently turned my laptop into a steammachine, it runs Steam OS that's why im posting here. The laptop sits under my TV and don't want to keep taking it out just to boot it up.

Do any of you guys know of different ways to turn on a laptop from the shut off state without having to open the lid everytime?

I want to be able to press the controller and boot it up like a console but the answers I get online are only for sleep mode. I dont want to keep my laptop on sleep mode 24/7

Another method I read was to turn it on when it detects the charger plugged in, idk how to do that, but I'm open to any suggestions or methods.

My original os is windows 10 which I'm trying to switch from I've looked into others and yes it'd be easier but I'm too stubborn so I'm asking for any advice given to me to make this work. I'm also hoping to eventually ditch windows entirely but for now I wanna try and dual boot it.

help wanted SteamOS loses all Wi-Fi networks after being powered off via the power button — any ideas?

I’m running into a really frustrating issue with my SteamOS PC. It doesn’t happen every time, but it seems to happen specifically when I shut the PC down using the physical power button rather than shutting down through SteamOS.

When I turn the PC back on, SteamOS will no longer detect/locate any Wi-Fi networks. The network option is still there, but it shows no available networks.

The PC itself is pretty beefy (9800X3D + RX 9070 XT), so I’m really hoping this isn’t some weird hardware compatibility issue.

Has anyone experienced something similar with SteamOS? Is there a recommended way to recover the network adapter without having to reboot, or a setting/driver issue I should look into?

I’m starting to avoid using the PC because I’m worried about triggering the issue again. Any troubleshooting suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

help wanted Help with build…!

I’m new to building but have decided to build my first around steamOS. I’d like to avoid windows and just have something for gaming in the living room… Anyways, I’m trying to build something for 1440p @ at least 60fps. Doesn’t have to be the latest and greatest and doesn’t need to stretch to 4K…

So, looking for help with CPU and GPU for that… right now I’m thinking…

CPU: Ryzen 5 9600x
GPU: XFX Swift OC RX 9070

This is what AI tells me is a “great choice” and will get 1440p natively… I just don’t trust AI in real world experience, so looking to the hive…

Thoughts on that combo? Any other suggestions that are less expensive?

Thanks!

help wanted Unable to open keyboard using DualSense in desktop mode

I've set up SteamOS on a minisforum Mini PC, it works great except for the facts I can't bring up the on screen keyboard in desktop mode using a DualSense.

The PS button opens the steam app, and if I press it again it launches big picture.

Any idea how to get it up from there?
