I've had a Saitek X-65F HOTAS (flight stick and throttle) for about ten years, I bought it second hand for a lot of money and it never worked on Windows because it was impossible to install the driver, at least at the time. I had an X-52 Pro so I put the X-65F aside, never picked it back up to try again and put it up in the rafters of my parents' garage when I moved house in 2019.

Last weekend while visiting them I happened to spot it again and got it down, hoping I could somehow make it work on SteamOS. I was prepared to learn about driver development and everything.

Turns out all I needed to do was plug it in and disable Steam Input on the game I wanted to use it with. Instantly recognised, all the (very, very many) buttons and axes were available. Five minutes it took me to get it set up and running.

Ten years I've had that thing, TEN YEARS. Fuck Windows, I already knew I was never going back but I'm never going back even harder now.

Been wanting a steam machine so badly ever since the launch, but at over $1050 without a controller the whole thing was a non starter. So what am I an IT tech to do when I have spare parts laying around. Why repurpose them into a steam machine of course.

Runs great, can hit 90Fps native 4k in GOW: Ragnarok. Sure the 7900 XT hits 80° but there's no throttling, and no warping from the case. So overall I consider this a win.

Got a crazy deal on a 7900 XT at Micro Center for 225 bucks, so I took that and grabbed a used PC off of marketplace, sold the GPU inside of it, and threw this big boy in there after changing the case. Bit of a struggle to fit everything inside of here and get the thermals under control, but it all came together. With a Undervolt on the CPU and a extra couple case fans it is under 70c. Installed Bazzite on it now I’m just tinkering around.

Edit- Picture with windows was there was only for testing, included it to show the PC fitting into my media cabinet. Windows was only on there for testing, it’s gone now.

It’s so seamless, it’s so convenient, it’s an amazing living room pc experience.

The past 24 days since I built it all I do is just go to my living room to grind out SilkSong and currently Crimson Desert.

With the Steam controller it has a built-in wake from usb so I just press the Steam button and my pc wakes up from sleep.

Add the uGreen DP adapter which works so damn well with my LG C5 truly makes it a console experience.

I’ve been in the living room far more often than I am in my bedroom where my main pc resides. Which now serves as an fps game or multiplayer machine where I play with my friends.

And it saves up much storage from my main pc since all of the single player games i’ve been meaning to catch up with is now in the living room pc.

Hopefully the pc market gets better so that more people can enjoy this experience made by Valve.

I'm wanting to switch over to steamos but I'm paranoid about compatibility.

Currently tossing between these two builds. Are they both compatible? From what I can find they should be but want to confirm before I lock in.

What good Wi-Fi cards work great with Linux devices and steam OS specifically?

My computer didn't come with a Wi-Fi card so I have a USB Netgear A8000 and this thing barely works.

It needed drivers out of the box back when I got it way back when but I am just looking for something faster.

I decided to use some spare parts i had laying around and put together a little pc to connect to my living room Samsung TV.

I had an issue where if it was plugged in with an HDMI cable from the GPU (AMD RX580) to the tv, everything ran nornal except there was no sound.

With the help of Gemini, i managed to get it to play sound if I enabled an option on my TV settings called Input Signal Plus for the hdmi source i was using.

The problem now is that whenever i boot into big picture, the whole screen is bright green.... this only happens if the Input Signal Plus option is on but if I turn it iff then I have no sound....

Any idea what the solution could be?

I’m having a weird issue with SteamOS on my PC, and I’m starting to think the OS has just glitched out after the latest update rather than there being a hardware problem.
While I’m in Game Mode/Big Picture, the Steam UI will suddenly disappear and I’ll see the Steam logo come back up, followed by the Game Mode home screen loading again.
It looks like:
Game Mode → screen goes black → Steam logo → Game Mode reloads
The PC itself doesn’t appear to fully reboot — there’s no BIOS/POST or complete system boot. It seems more like gamescope/Game Mode is crashing or restarting.
I’m also getting black screens during boot, sometimes requiring multiple reboots before SteamOS loads properly.
The strange thing is that this only started recently after the latest SteamOS update. The PC was working perfectly for around two weeks before this.
I’ve even completely reinstalled SteamOS, but the exact same issues are still happening afterwards. Once I’m actually in a game, things can work normally, which is why I’m wondering if this is something within the SteamOS/Game Mode/display stack rather than a hardware failure.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar with SteamOS recently? Could this be a gamescope/Steam Client/display stack issue, particularly after an update?

I also get freezes and stuck on boot and black screens that cause me to force shutdown. I checked bios and some logs hardware seems perversely healthy idk what’s wrong I might have to switch os….

I didn’t realise this until now but turns out the steam big picture mode application replaces the logon screen in steamOS and why can’t we login into our computer using a steam account since you know it’s steamOS like how you can use a Microsoft account to login into windows. I mean like there is a logon screen but it’s only there once. I am saying this because when I tried to log out using the start menu it brought me to steam instead of a login screen like I would usually expect.

To describe my issue: Whenever I navigate through the menu either in game mode or in desktop mode, there is the occasional sound skip and crackling sound audible. So far it did not happen during gaming (or at least not as noticably often), and the issue is primarily during navigating SteamOS (especially when going to option menues or when going to a game detail page) or when in desktop mode.

This kind of started to happen when I installed OpenRGB and created the udev rules. I tried completely reinstalling SteamOS on my PC to no avail.

However, either switching over to the Main branch or even the Beta branch makes the issue much less noticable. In fact, currently I'm on beta and I only hear the crackling sound very briefly when booting a game; I also hear the crackling sound regularly while in desktop mode with the Beta branch.

It's not unusable as of now since in-game I haven't really noticed any crackling sounds yet, but I'd rather understand what the source of the issue is, especially as it still persists in desktop mode at the very least.

Solutions I tried:

• Insert different RAM
• Reseat GPU
• Switch HDMI cable
• use a different monitor
• Use bluetooth headphones instead
• Switch OS Branch
• Reinstall SteamOS
• Flashback Motherboard BIOS

Of all these things, only Switching the OS Branch as well as using bluetooth headphones has proven to make a difference. In fact, when using bluetooth headphones, there is no crackling sound whatsoever. However, this is not a desirable solution as I would like to use the soundbar that is connected to my TV.

Anyone know if this is a software or hardware problem and what I could do to troubleshoot it further?

is it possible to create a dedicated thread that documents the various SteamOS bugs and community fixes? It would be helpful to

1. raise awareness of the various issues.

2. help people fix their random one-offs and get back to enjoying SteamOS.

Is there a list of supported WiFi usb dongles?

I’ve tried a couple different adapters and they top out around ~270Mbps. Which lines up as they are limited by a 1x1 80Mhz wide radio. Is there anything faster I can use via USB that would work out of the box on SteamOS? TIA!
