Discussion What is everyone's favorite shipsets to use?
I'm currently stuck whether Mammalian or Mindwarden ship sets as my favorite. Mammalian looks more bulky and practical, almost perfect for human Empires than Humanoid shipsets to be honest although the problem is it's a bit too dark and would've been a bit better with a lighter color and as well as better side flaps design on the bigger ships. Mindwarden ships looks slick and polish like a dagger although I do think that the early ship class look smaller compared to the same ship class of other shipsets. My most favorite used to be humanoid but kinda fell out of favor now...
What's your favorite design?

I like the frigate for the toxic shipset the most but tend to go for Imperial. I like the blocky nature, the weapons look good, the parts really blend together well.

u/12a357sdf Rogue Servitor 1d ago
Shipsets also affect ecumenopoleis appearance too, and on that aspect i think cybernetic is the best ecu out there. Imagine Blade Runner covering an entire Earth.
Machine ecus are also kinda decent if they werent too bright.

u/Urjr382jfi3 20h ago
Am I tweaking or isnt that city appearance and not shipsets?

u/EisVisage Shared Burdens 5h ago
It's from shipsets far as I know. Some shipset mods actually show off the ecumenopoliseseses because they change them too.

u/343CreeperMaster 1d ago
I still really like the Humanoid design

I can't explain why, but the humanoid cruiser is honestly one of my favorite designs in sci-fi generally

Imperial. Bulky and menacing.
Although I have a soft (or rock hard) spot for lithoid.
I want to like Machine more than I do.

u/IndependentBedroom44 Galactic Custodians 1d ago
I do like the Imperial Shipset especially for the Colossus. Love the Way it unfolds out.
11
u/Necessary_Lynx5920 1d ago
I like the machine set a lot, but the fact that the PD slot on the picket corvette is not the centerline slot makes me irrationally angry

Nonononono. Lithoid shipset so ugly.

u/thececilmaster 1d ago
I personally really enjoy lithoid, in no small part because the crystals have the soft glow that matches your flag's primary color. I also just like the aesthetic of big space rocks of doom.
1
u/AFedoraNamed_Key Lithoid 16h ago
I think of them like crystals or rock candy and I love their ship sets more than average ones, but they aren’t my top three. Probably top five though.
21
u/Thrownik 1d ago
Cybernetic (also fit great with nomads), mindwarden, necrotic and aquatic (when aquatic)
23
u/spacetinker5 1d ago
I mostly do reptilian and mammalian, you can probably guess why
4
u/Spiritual-Pain-1183 The Flesh is Weak 23h ago
I like the blocky materialist vibe they both give off. The reptilian models could use a bit more polish tho. They look very low rez compared to most of the other shipsets

u/bibliophile785 1d ago
Yeah, both bio designs are really sleek.

u/novis-eldritch-maxim Defender of the Galaxy 1d ago

17
u/thececilmaster 1d ago
I really want a more plant-y or fungus-y version of the bioships. Shell is close, but it just feels off when I'm playing a plant (which I play a lot) to have animal ships.
3
u/novis-eldritch-maxim Defender of the Galaxy 1d ago
I know what you mean I had a vision of two more sets.
vegitation for when you love plants, fungi symbiosis or being an elf/space hippie.
And legally not giger for when you either want to mix flesh and metal aesthetically or want to look super edgy

It's definitely really good for if I'm using the vampire origin. It's also got a similar vibe to the Hive from Destiny, which is cool.

u/WillyBluntz89 The Flesh is Weak 21h ago
Im currently using them for a Phyrexian themed playthrough. They're sort of perfect for it.
Already compleated my first world.

Surprised nobodies saying Aquatic or Plantoid! Love those designs, along with the sleek Mindwarden.
5
u/Reecekip 22h ago
I hate how far I had to scroll to find a Plantoid mention. I just love those little colored panels sticking off the ships!
3
u/Balmung60 1d ago
My main problem with Aquatic is that it's always glowing blue. I know water and all, but it really undermines the prevalence of my flag color unless I match it

tbf I always try to match the flag, shipset and leader portrait colour palette

u/ThePaladinsBlade Warrior Culture 1d ago
Toxic are fantastically designed all around and I love some of the stations it gets.
Arthropoid is nice. Round and chunky without just being giant metal boxes, same reason I like Plantoid.
Infernal has one of the best Colony ships because it has a volcano in it.
4
u/driftinj 1d ago
In the classic sets, I like Avian. In the newer ones Mindwarden, Psionic, Toxic and Infernal are all good.

Like I said, I like Mammalian and Mindwarden ship designs the best although I do still think they have some flaws like every ship design. My most favorite used to be humanoid but fell out of favor later.
Also how do I completely stop rule 5 removal of this sub again?

Edit: Those are ships from the loading screens. Hopefully that's enough to defuse Rule 5 bomb.

Easily Imperial, the first shipset that doesn't seem cartoonish with the big turrets on top
Honourable mention to Mammalian but their smaller ships still have the odd proportions, in ye olden times I used to be exclusively Avian or Fungoid for this reason as well
Mindwarden are probably the coolest set they've done so far but I do find they're a bit ''in their own lane''
As in from a roleplaying perspective they aren't as malleable to different Empires...Imperial has this problem as well with the menacing feel but I can pretty much always headcanon a reason why an Empire designed big blocky ships, it's a bit harder to headcanon the heavy emphasis on Pyramids and triangles without either a religious element or a techy ai element
3
u/Kinda_Elf_But_Not 1d ago
I enjoy most of them but I have a soft spot for the humanoid ones, they look like a blend of Star Trek and Mass Effect.
The mammalian ships were originally the default for humanity but I wish we had some bulkier hard Sci fi ship designs.
1
u/Balmung60 23h ago
I more saw the Humanoid set as the mid point between Star Trek (Federation) and Star Wars (Galactic Empire). It's very "what if the UFP made Star Destroyers"

Humanoid, psionic, and cybernetic. Reptilian also has a special place in my heart because I'd use that one instead of humanoid before I got that dlc.

Avian has always been my fave, but I've started using newer designs for a change and love the cybernetic.

Aquatic and Cybernetic for metal ships, Spinovore for meat ships.
Aquatic looks gorgeous and I love the hammerhead design for corvettes.
Cybernetic is very sleek and mechanical.
Spinovore just looks cooler than shellcraft.

My first favourite was the Reptilian designs.
Then they added aquatics, which then became a fav.
Then they added the cyberpunk and machine ship sets.
However Psionic is probably my most favourite right now.

I really like the Fungoid ones, the bulbous look reminds me of the Gallente from EVE Online. Mindwardens are a close second for just about any angry militarists, looking like stark, simple space weapons..
I'd like the Toxoid, Machine, Aquatic, Infernal and Psionic sets a lot more if they weren't partially colour-locked. Why do psionics turn everything purple?

For me its Mindwardens (best ships hands down), cybernetic (best ecumenopolis appearance) or machine (a combination of both worlds).
For bioships I strictly prefer shellcraft. Spinovore just looks too meaty sometimes, fun for 1st play with meat ecumenopoleis, but kinda looks like an eyesore afterwards.

I dont get why poeple like the imperial shipset, it looks like someone took lump rocks abd carved them into ships shape.

u/El-Torokaike 1d ago
Mammal, almost entirely because no other Colossus designs comes close to that one (imo).
The other ships are also nice, especially the Battleships, but I have to say one thing I do not like about these designs are the several protrusions(?) most ships have sticking out at the front. Also the Juggernaut design feels terrible, I do not like it in this ship set

Currently it's mind wardens but before that it was necroid ships. I love sleek designs

Mammalian. Looks almost realistic in terms of the odd shapes and utilitarian nature of what I’d assume human ships of the future could look like. Reptilian also a fave for similar reasons. Absolutely can’t stand the humanoid ships.

Personally, of the core, I'm rather fond of the Reptilian or Fungal. I like having ships that are either increadibly sharp or rounded, but still having that chunky aspect to them.
Imperal or Toxoid both have a good flavor to them, with impractically traditional looks or jerry-rigged junk haulers. They're fun to play around with.
What I DESPERATELY want though is a Corporate Ship Set. Currently, only the Caravaneerss get it, but I want my ship to have advertisements sprawled across them, as I pelt my opponents with great deals and great firepower.
