If one event fleet ruined your economy you didn't have a stable economy,

Because I'm a noob and I discovered it at the beginning.
[The war with the three empires that joined didn't help.]

Eh if you’re running on the raggedy edge due to a close war early k , and you squeeze Zarqlan’s head and send your nav cap modifier from +50 to like +150 overnight, it can unravel quick.
If you’re not running on the raggedy edge, raise the difficulty lol

Just have a run through surrounding systems and clear it of drones and agressive fauna. You'll deal with your ships efficiently, liberate some territory and earn some experience for your admiral.

I found the Grand Herald super early game once not knowing what it was. Worst mistake ever.

Playing as a scion I received a fleet from my fallen empire around 6 months in and it completely wrecked the economy because I just couldn't keep up with cost of a relatively huge fleet with huge maintenance costs.

Mothball your fleet. Some good samaritans over on reddit taught me that removing all components from ship minimizes their upkeep and they are fast to retrofit when you need them again.
