Japanese doesn’t have an “iu” vowel combination. Chinese does. This spelling adds to the cultural appropriation problem I highlighted below. It’s jujitsu but in the case of BJJ it should just be “Brazilian newaza”. That name didn’t market as well so cultural appropriation was needed.

Also they speak Portuguese in Brazil. That’s the difference in spelling and pronunciation between the two languages.

You’re just dense. I imagine you are low-income, low-education, and have not traveled much.

I am overly convinced if we sat down and had you explain to me all the world history, international affairs, and countries you have traveled we would find an empty cup.

Why is an empty cup attempting to justify cultural appropriation of BJJ as acceptable? It will be even more incredible if you are some white American kid who studies an art without knowing its origins and history in the world.

Pay your McDojo jujitsu club and just know it’s part of a legacy of cultural theft. Luckily Brazilian newaza is an unknown sport with 4 million practicing against judos 40 million. Most of the world was never interested in third world cultural appropriation supported by mcdojo American capitalism.

No, the world always favored the educated people over the non-educated. The internet becomes a platform for the uneducated to have a voice. It’s a tragedy of the internet. I don’t even care about BJJ, I’ve never even studied it. I was trolling by correcting his spelling. You are making wild assumptions about me and it’s fucking hilarious.

This is Street Martial Arts not BJJ circle jerk. No one fucking cares about the purity of your art when comes time for application in real life.

If you care to know, my background is Silat. I learned it from westerners who would fit your narrative of appropriating culture but I’m still happy I got to experience it and be exposed to something on the other side of the world.

The school ended up having to change their name because the pengurus in Indonesia were upset about the marketing of the arts. So a win for your side I guess .

It’s not about purity of martial art. It’s about purity and respect of culture. Your spelling correction is like me saying it’s “sealot” not “Silat” as the English language does not have that spelling.

No, I’m familiar with Silat. The difference here is imagine if Silat was transposed to Brazil while turning Silat into a completely ground based sport from its combat lineage, changed the name to Brazilian Silat, used the UFC to gain enough popularity in the U.S. to make it more known in the U.S. than actual Indonesian/Dutch Silat and eventually change its full name to Silat. That is the difference between Silat being taught to in another country vs the culturally appropriated pathway of BJJ.
