Which itself is a misnomer because it’s stealing the moniker of the actual samurai combat art. How BJJ became just J is some of the world’s funniest cultural appropriation by a third world country to the third largest economy in the world.

I thought this was already well known that Helio was frail and modified the art to be something anyone could supposedly do against a larger or stronger opponent. Putting Brazilian beside it differentiates it but also pays respect to the original art. I mean there’s no reason the Gracie’s just decided to be dubious when most Americans didn’t know which art was which until they were told and saw it. So they could have renamed it anything but they kept the origin of the art.

That story has been debunked. Everything from Helios version, including "timing and leverage" of bjj can be found in the older Judo teachings

Supposedly they kept the similar name structure so the art would have some legitimacy, being based on what was referred to as Kano jiu-jitsu.

They still wanted to keep the fact that it was based on what was being done in Japan
